Thanks Dave. I can tell that fishing is one of your favorite things to do in the world, because after all these years, it’s usually the only time I’ve heard you laughing during a video. It’s my favorite thing in the world as well 🎣

Cool Vid Dave! My favourite packback rod is a Kilwell (New Zealand company) packaway "8ft 6inch spin/fly" good spin rod, but average for a 4weight fly rod, all i need to do is change the handle setup and swap over reel, but the extra versatility of being able to use a fly line, or a compact skagit head like a 160grain OPST commando, give me far more opportunities to catch a fish.

Looks like and Abu Garcia reel? Great option. That is what use on an ultralight trout rig. You're making me want to setup a small setup for the backpack with a different rod!

Love love love these! This is a great kit! I carry an ultralight rod reel combo with a small two sided fishing kit with flies, rooster tails, etc in it! Glad we agree! I can catch any and all species with it!

That's the way I see it.. Take smaller lures to catch smaller fish, but the entrails can be used as bait for bigger fish. Good video David! 👍👍

Loved it Dave. We might be knocking on a bit but fishing takes us back to being young lads again. Could see how much you enjoyed that. I ran a survival course session on the benefits of carrying a breakdown or telescopic rod yesterday. Was great to see your film pop up 👍. Atb Rick n Billydog

I can tell we are similar in that we both love to fish. Traps and set lines are great but in the time it takes to rig them, I can usually fill the pan and then release the rest of them and get my shoulder work out LOL

Teachers with sound knowledge and 'ethics'! Common sense tells me to learn from these people like Dave. Taking all the fish means eventually you'll starve. Diversifying the food sources and protecting the diversity is an integral aspect of survival. (And the manner of an intelligent being.) Awesome buddy, Cheers.👍 Universal Sovereign Citizen

I've had good luck keeping brim from swallowing the hook when using a bobber that is small enough to just barely float the rig and a hook that's big enough they can't inhale it immediately. If you get that setup weighted just right, the bobber will go under as soon as something starts messing with your worm. Usually, the only brim that will swallow it are the size of your hand or bigger, which can be enough to make a meal with just one fish.

Also! I can attest to the "big hooks catch big fish, small hooks catch all the fish" rule. I tied me some small wooly buggers in size 10 a couple years ago and took off to go catch a few bluegill for the skillet. And I wound up catching my biggest smallmouth that day! A 17 inch 4 pounder! And then I cleaned up on the bluegill not long after

Used to be a little Fishing buddy thing 30yrs ago. Rod and reel with fold down rod, pop-up handle for hooks, toss it behind the seat of your truck. would definitely handle those lil fish. don't remember about accuracy of the casts but get the right weights and get good it would get the job done. Ill try to figure out the name, but you seem to be promoting that. lol

@voose3839Ай бұрын
Huge tip for these spinning reels. If you dont want the slinky line. Put a backing on the reel, and spool up with braid first. Then learn a leader knott. It casts farther, no mess with the line falling off the reel, more sensitivity, plus you will have that braid if you need it in a pinch.

I got my grandson an Ugly Stik Dock Runner. I liked it so much I got myself one for my pack. I've seen guys catch massive fish on them. Both are awesome rigs so there's no reason to have to improvise one in the field "if" you're smart enough to carry fishing line, tackle and the tools needed to create something out of scratch. If I have to craft a fishing rod in the field, that means I lost my pack. If I lost my pack, I'm pretty sure I lost the fishing line & tackle in it too! 😂

I could not agree more about ultra lite fishing gear. I have an old Shakespeare ultra lite rod with slip rings to mount the reel. So I can slide the rings down to the bottom and mount a fly reel. The thing is about 6' 6" and does not break down, a small draw back. That's OK I have another break down rod that does the same thing, but I really like my old rod best' That pond could use a bit of culling out (dinner for Dave) Try out an old fashion Hula Popper for bass in that same pond at about 6 PM. mimic a swimming frog. Pop, Pop, chug, chug, wham bass on. It's worked for me for many years. ;-)

I have read that if the fish swallows the hook and you don't want to keep it you should cut the line instead of trying to pull the hook out. Supposedly, most modern hooks will rust away after just a few days and the fish will likely be fine. I don't 100% know if it is true or not but that is what I do, just in case. In fact, even if it is a fish I am going to keep if it swallows the hook I will still cut the line because I don't see causing it any more stress than necessary and I can retrieve my hook when I clean it. Of course, if I were survival fishing and only had a couple of hooks then I would probably approach things differently.
