I have had a Hudson Bay 2 lb axe for about 42 years. It has built miles upon miles of fence (both notching poles and driving spikes), cut cords of firewood and kindling (for campfires) along with multiple other chores. It has ridden in a pickup, been strapped to a saddle or to a backpack. I have replaced the handle once and it is my go to for lots of things. I believe I spent less than $10 on it when I purchased it, all in all an excellent investment.

This axe is hands down better than the marbles camp axe that wranglerstar said was the best. The head on that came loose first swing. The Council Tool is a great size, great profile, great price and works great. One of my favorite more affordable axes. A great starter axe. A+ IMO.

Council Tool's Hudson Bay is the ticket. One could spend a lot more, but now they'd be at a point of diminishing returns. I argued with a guy about finish out the box being better on axes costing twice as much. Know what my response was? If it remains that good, it's not being used. Once one takes an axe out into the woods, it loses that new car smell and gets proper scars and saps on it. Period. That is, "if" they are using their axe for more than just posting pictures of it strategically posed on social media. ;)

2022 and I bought a version of this hatchet. In the UK the one I found had a 70cm handle (28inch) but the same head as in this presentation. I had not seen this video before I bought that axe and frankly I was astounded, still am. My axe needed 5 minutes on a fine stone to get a razor edge, it splits chops carves, throws sparks off a ferro rod the whole 9 yards I've even bucked 8 inch beech with it. There are 2 issues with mine, first the edge is really fine and so has chipped n one occasion though that could be through careless ness on my part, second the handled is a bit loose, again could be my fault as this was not intended to be used for bucking reasonably think hardwoods , and whn you are yanking that handle around to get it out when it gets stuck well I guess loosening up is understandable. I absolutely love the version you get in the UK, quite possibly one of the best axes I've used including my brand name swedish small forest axe

This is a great axe, especially for the price. You can't go wrong! Had mine for almost a year, now. Love it! With a little investment of your effort to tune up this axe (like Dave discussed in this video), you will have a very fine tool that will last a lifetime. And at a fraction of the cost of a "premium' axe. The only difference is in the type of steel. Will that matter to you in the long run? To me, not so much. The 2 pound head weight, makes it a more powerful tool than the average camp axe or hatchet.

Dave I am a axe nut and have many and the hudson bay axe from council tool is my favorite I do have the 28 inch handle on mine. I hade a great leather craftsman build me a custom sheath I do have a vid on it if interested. I have been thinking of the shorter one for paking and you have convinced me to do so.

Do you treat your clothing and/or your gear (tent, bags etc) with a tick repellent? Like permethrin? If not, do you use a home made solution for repelling ticks, or treating tick bites?

Had this hatchet for a long time, took the coating off to show that steel ,sanded the shaft down and stained it and applied BLO , refinished the bit and sharpened her up now she goes everywhere with my and my Habilis bushtool

Dave take a look at their Forest Service axe... It's between their Velvicut and standard line.

I have the standard, the Forest Service Edition AND the Velvicut. The Forest Service is my most used axe of them all. It's a workhorse. And when my axes (plural) costing 4X as much came to me in states of fail straight out the box, I had to resort to using my Forest Service Edition while I was waiting for their replacements for months until I told them to keep their import boutique axes; I'll keep my American clydesdale that was getting the job done for me already.

I have the Council Tool Hudson Bay Axe with the 28" handle. Did the same work on it, sharpening, sanding, BLO on the handle. It goes everywhere with me. Absolutely my favorite axe!

The best 17 inch you can get for the price. I have the 26 too and its a great pack axe. Council Tools is a great company. Love them in southern Oregon. If you knock the paint off you can make it damn near pretty too!

I have the Council Tool Forest Service axe which is also a "non-premium" axe with the same leather mask. It has been fantastic after a little initial work (fortunately mine came with an unfinished handle so it was easier to finish).

I have a Hudson Bay that I bought years ago originally on a 24" handle, I rehab does with a house handle 19" and absolutely love it. For many of the same reasons you stated on this vid. Great video!

I really like the Hudson Bay pattern. My first hatchet for my 9th birthday was a Norlund Hudson Bay. 44 years later & it still has the original handle despite doing stupid things boys do. ( i.e.: throwing the thing at tree trunks when I was young & stupid, well stupider than I am now) I did re-hang the head but it was indeed on the original handle. I guess that has something to do with me favouring this style of axe. This one looks like a good little axe. Any quality made "hardware store" axe can be tuned up to a treasured item in a short period of time. The key is that you start with a well made, quality axe like Council Tool produces.

Thanx Dave. I really trust council tool axes. I bought the 24" boys axe and also put time in the edge the eye and taking off the varnish and putting BLO on it and I've been very satisfied with it. Dave is the pole hardened on thecouncil Hudson bay or the boys axe and if not ,what is these limitations on a pole that isn't hardened. Thanx God bless!!!

Great video. Happy new year Dave. Could you shoot a video demonstrating how to reprofile an axe like this (tools to use, techniques to get the desired angle, etc.). I bought a condor axe online that has a horrible bevel, and it feels unsafe to use it because of the way it twists when digging into the wood. I would like to properly put an even bevel on it.

great vid Dave , I like the common man price ! Having cried once for the GB small forest axe ! I like the idea of having another 1/2 pound of weight for splitting don't get me wrong I love my GB but I'm finding out I really don't need my axe to carve as I bring other cutting tools for that and I'm constantly treating it like a new born baby .It would be nice to just leasurly toss it around with no worries ! Also Dave not sure if you've already covered this topic but I bought the leather belt pouch at your store , and I love it but would be very interested to see a video on using deer or elk antler to make a button or fastener of some kind which would make it perfect thx Dave !

How do you find the (almost) 90degree top of the edge? Since trying a few viking/rus models of axes I've never gone back to the more "tall" axes! I find the nose to be really well-suited for campwork, including finer cutting/carving.

This is not a carving axe for sure, it is a camp axe, I agree there really is a difference, the sacrifice of the more traditional style you speak of is less wedge to the cheeks for splitting fire wood

I hate curved handle axe/hatchet's. They don't swing as well or accurately as a straight handle.

I agree. But I think that's our bias. I'm used to straight handle, it's what I learned on and became skilled with, adapting to that straight handle. For others it could be the reverse. Either way, I much prefer a straight handle.

Personally, I like the curved handle. It feels more secure, and easier to control. For a one handed chopper though, I couldn't care less.
