Probably worth mentioning for context that the presence of jazz elements and harp runs in Steven D. Bingley-Ellison, aka Flying Lotus' music are due to the fact that he is the grand-nephew of the incredible jazz harpist and composer Alice Coltrane, who was married to one of the greatest jazz musicians ever, John Coltrane.

Definitely an album to just let flow. The transitions are everything. Probably the best instrumental hop hop/electronic album ever. Galaxies of sound. Also funny you brought up Radiohead right before the track with Thom Yorke haha

I’m trying to figure out where do you hear hip hop at in this stuff? I say that because this ain’t music what is it a video game sound? I don’t see what all the fuss is I don’t feel nothing going on here that captures or stirs up my musical desires/excitement, maybe I need to give it some time I like different and unique and interesting stuff

@@sambell385 Hip Hop don’t always gotta be raps. I would say the hip hop inspiration is in the live MPC beat progression on songs like Zodiac Shit and maybe Satellite. But there’s a lot of great jazz and orchestral instrumentation backing all the music on here. It’s definitely some left field electronic jazz shit lol. There’s a lot to appreciate but it’s not held to one sound specifically. There’s so much inspiration from other genres on here that literally you just gotta have the right set of ears to appreciate this stuff lol. But I totally get how it can sound off putting to some people. Music is music; what can I say lol. Always somethin out there for somebody

Something to note about " Galaxy In Janaki " From genius: While Lotus’s mother was hospitalized with diabetes complications, Lotus brought his recording equipment into her room and set up microphones to gather audio. He later used the wheeze of a respirator and pings of vital-sign monitors in the production of this track. His mother died shortly before the albums release, and he dedicated this track to her. I know it was a weird thing to do, I’m not the type to go out recording things like that. But I didn’t want to forget that space. The title comes from the name his aunt gave his mother, which also means “mother.”

omg i am SO glad you covered this one! cosmogramma is one of my favourite albums ever made, & it’s always so fascinating & exciting to see somebody’s first reaction to it flying lotus (or simply flylo) made this album immediately after his 2008 album titled Los Angeles, while grieving his mother's passing while his mother was in the hospital, flylo brought in a mobile recording rig & set up some microphones around her room to capture audio samples, like the respirator & the vital-sign monitors in fact, this entire album is sort of a tribute to his mother, especially the closer, Galaxy in Janaki you brought up how thundercat must have had a lot of creative contribution to the album, & you're right! flylo & thundercat became really close during the production of cosmogramma, & they've been working together ever since this album conceptually draws upon out of body experience, as well as lucid dreaming, which is why it overall feels like a soundtrack to astral projection, where every song feels like you're traveling through another dimension or even a galaxy - i wanted to say i felt your reaction to Do the Astral Plane so much, i feel that way even now to like 90% of this album LOLL it's just a really good idm album, & has stood the test of time since its release in 2010 hell i daresay it's ahead of its time, like i could talk about this album forever LMAO i remember you bringing up how people should rap over these beats, & it made me want to bring up something flylo did in 2011-12 around that period, he started anonymously rapping under this alias called Captain Murphy, of which he would keep his identity secret until the end of 2012 during a performance flylo has a mixtape under the Captain Murphy name titled Duality, which i personally think is a good listen, down the line! glad u enjoyed the album, i can't wait for you to get into flylo's material more and more!

Clock Catcher is probably my favorite album opener of all time. Its so disorienting, feels like just randomly getting blasted into space with no warning, or being brainwashed lmao either way it perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the album

The third Track and the final track were my two favorites but I loved all the songs. As an Electronic music fan this album is very unique in the genre, because of how minimalist, ambient, and classical as well as a simplicity as opposed to Daft Punk and the Glitch Mob {I am a fan of both} who are {I mean the following as a compliment} very bold, loud complex, and retro-futuristic and to an extent decadent they really go all out. Fantastic Video loved watching it. Good thing Flying Lotus is here ever since Daft Punk disbanded.

"I'm guessing flume was inspired by this" you're 100% right, flume was the reason I got into flylo because I used to be a huge flume fan and he's brought him up in interviews saying he was a huge influence
