Excellent source of information on how to tackle this problem.Thank you so much. I found that Home Depot no longer stock the Everbilt 1 1/16" expansion (or well) nuts. But my local Ace hardware store had a drawer with 1 1/2" #10-32 well nuts for which I got #10-32 3" stainless steel pan-head screws. These have a much more substantial head than the #10-32 1 1/2" Everbilt screws and are needed to reach the 1 1/2" well nut. Be sure to put the #HK36 adapter over the well nut before you tighten the screw to expand the well nut and wedge it in place. On my first attempt the screw was drawn into the soft rubber of the well nut and would not come out so I had to sacrifice it by drilling it out and then doing it the right way with the #HK36 adapter in place before cinching up the well nut to wedge it in place. The EverBilt stainless screws have puny heads and you should insert and extra washer into the #HK36 adapter before tightening it up to prevent the screw head pulling through the #HK36 hole into the well nut soft rubber upper.

Thank you so much for doing this video. I struggled with the same problem for about a year and was not able to remove the bolts no matter how much wd 40 I put on them. After watching your video, I was able to remove the bolts and the expansion nuts. I got to Home Depot and was able to purchase the screws and the expansion nuts but I could not find the adapter from Bemis. The new toilet seat I bought came with 2 plastic bolts and wing nuts which were intended for a toilet that one could get to the bottom and screw in the bolt/nut. So I took a hack saw and cut off the head of the plastic bolts, drilled a hole in the middle of each bolt head and used them in place of the Bemis adapter. It worked!

Thank you so-o-o-o much for this step-by-step video, including holding up the packages you used for each piece. I wrote it all down and then went shopping at Home Depot. Can't believe it took me TWO YEARS to get the toilet seat replaced, and it should have only taken 15 minutes. Like another commenter, I couldn't find the adapter kit you held up for the Bemis seat. I had purchased a Bemis/Mayfair seat like you did, so I just called the Bemis -800 phone number. Lo and behold, the super-helpful customer service woman sent me an adapter kit FREE that I received in two days. It had a whole lot of pieces, (including some that may have been useful instead of the expansion nuts [although they looked a little too wide]), but the white nylon adapters that you showed were exactly the same. Ya hoo! Keep on recording, David. Your video was one of the most helpful I have seen on any topic.

Hi David - a very helpful video and here here - what a pain it is to try to do this! You helped me figure out that I could remove the anchor, which snapped halfway down its length, even after I used plenty of WD-40 to attempt to overcome the corrosion. I ended up placing an 1/8" thick piece of rubber onto the porcelain, then a 1/4" thick piece of oak and then using a pry bar to pull out the screw and anchor. To provide a new anchor I ground down a 1/2 nylon dry wall anchor and glued it in place with epoxy resin. I then used a stainless steel sheet metal screw of the right diameter (+ a the original washer) which held the lid hinge firmly in place. Mission accomplished.

I used a hand grinder to eliminate the bolt head which heated the bolts to the point where all the plastic parts melted. I broke one bolt by bending it back and forth with vice grips. The other one just pulled out; probably could have done the same thing with a torch because I never had to completely grind the heads off. I then had to enlarge the holes from 3/8 to 1/2 inch to accept the Kohler seat anchor. I used a carbide bit and had to keep cooling it off in the toilet water. Probably not the correct bit for porcelain but eventually the job got done.

If you have to pull the bolt out, it can be helpful to hit it sideways a few times to loosen it. Hit it in one direction once, then in the opposite direction once, and repeat this a few times. I also had to drill one of the bolts out, and I started with a very small diameter bit angled at about a 45 degree angle and drilled to eat away at the metal. I gradually worked up to slightly larger diameter bits, never having to get all the way up to the 5/16" drill bit the Kohler mfr's official seat bolt anchor replacement video recommends. Use cobalt drill bits. Once the anchor was loosened from drilling on it, I pushed it down and it fell away.

Isn't there a toggle type fitting that would work? Also, of course one would use stainless replacement . The original bolts are stainless and thus impervious to a regular hack saw blade. I got the hold fittings out through a few ingenious maneuvers and while the seat was off it was easier to hoist the one piece Kohler with my home made toilet "transporter" which all plumber already have-of course in professional form.

With the Kohler one piece toilet you have to remove the tank cover and reach inside under the lip where the bolts are supposed to be and unscrew them. I just changed seats on my Dad's and it was a bit of a headache but he LOVES that Kohler 1 piece. I made sure to use the metal washers on top but bought 4 ⅛" rubber washers, 2 lock washers and 2 nuts from the hardware store. I have exactly the same problem as you. I bought a Bemis replacement toilet seat thinking that it should be an easy install. Wrong, as you point out. I could not get the screws out that hold the old seat in place. It looks like the kit is Bemis part HK36 (as shown in your video). I can't find it anywhere. Where did you get yours? I went through this like you did (seat kept coming loose) but the problem is that the rubber covered "well nut" or "cavity bolt" which is the next size up is too big. Lowe's had them all on display. Can't get it in the hole to even start screwing the bolt in. I got one of the Kohler metal anchors (they're now on Amazon) and was able to install it by pushing down on the screw when I fastened the seat. @davidcomora Жыл бұрын
Once the head of the bolt was sawed off, I used a steel rated drill bit that was smaller in width than the bolt and drill down in it about a 1/4 of an inch. Then I used an old drill bit and a hammer to push the bolt down into the fixture. Since you are dealing with ceramics, you need to be careful when you pound down... so if you need to drill further to make the bolt pliable enough to pound through, it might be a good idea.

A second issue is mixing two metals, brass and stainless steel in a wet environment and not expecting them to corrode into each other resulting in a solid mass of screw/anchor that either spins in the porcelain hole or is frozen in place. So I figured to do it myself this time… carefully remove the existing bolts from the anchor… slap on a new seat and reinstall the bolts. Well, the first bolt came out. The second bolt is not coming loose, so I soaked it in KROIL… will try again in the morning. Then I took a photo of the model number on the inside of the tank and sent it to Kohler. They said the number doesn’t match with anything. Great. It’s a chinese Kohler, so. NEXT MORNING..Thanks to KROIL, a good screwdriver and a pair of old (USA Made) Vice Grips… I got the other bolt out.

LOL, apparently Kohler has got the bots going to make the best of this post. Well I am just in the process of replacing the 10th flapper on my toilet, so I wish there was a bot to do that!! I watched the Kohler video on how to replace it and they cut when they talk about removing the old flapper bar. They cut, because its very difficult to pull the old bar out and they don't want you to realize how tough this is. Not surprisingly, they have also removed the ability to post a comment below their video, as I suspect many customers were complaining about how difficult the process is. I may make a Toilet from Hell, Part 2 video to show what is involved in removing the plastic flapper bar.

I bought the metal Kohler kit and it worked ok to put a new seat on. But now about 3 years later we want to change seats again. The anchors are just spinning. I can’t pry them out. The ‘wrench’ they included with the kit can’t get enough grip on the anchor to hold it while I break the screws loose. They must have corroded together. I hate this toilet so much. Thought my issues would be solved forever by buying the official kohler anchors. I might try slide hammering the screws and anchors out. If the toilet breaks, I will celebrate as I throw it to the curb.

Believe it or not, I'm still at it. It has been almost 2 months. Could you, please, answer me this? The anchors contained in the 84999 seemed too narrow for the holes in my toilet, a Kohler Rialto, in spite that they recommend this part to fix my toilet seat. Is it maybe so that it doesn' t matter, since the expansion nut will expand anyway? I can't find any of the other nuts and screws that you and some other people talk about. It seems that Home Depot is no restocking a lot of things, maybe because there are problems with the supply chain. At least in Miami.

Ugggh....as I recall, i had a tough time getting the Kohler expansion screws in place, they seemed tight and then 1 broke. Mine were really tough to get in the holes. I had to bang them in and was afraid I would crack the toilet. I found the Home Depot rubber expansion screws worked great, but they need to be the appropriate size. They are pretty cheap, so maybe try a couple of sizes.

Why dit you not just change the toilet? I just run into the same problem and for the price of toilets and labor involved to get this done I’m thinking better to go for other options and change

We rented a home with one of these pos. The lid looked so bad, like someonehad some major gangly piercings down yonder. Back to the lid, you have to give the anchors to the toilet gods, and drop them in the base. The new seat has anchors and if the seat needs replaced, repeat. This is a money maker for sure for them. Super nice shitter however.

Get the correct flappers, and replace the seat, I have been running Kohler 1 pc 2 of them for almost 20 years, no such issues...Ya replace the flapper maybe every 4 years, and the actual valve after 15 years!

LOL, I may make another video on how to remove the black plastic flapper bar from the back of the water tower. No easy feat! I noticed on Kohler's video that they cut at that point and then the video continues after the bar has been removed. I also notice they removed the ability to comment from that video as I suspect a lot of folks have been having difficulty removing the bar. I am about to replace my 10th flapper in about 18 years. Maybe my water is hard, but the other non-kohler toilets in my house have only had flappers replaced about 1 x in the same time period. This is not a cheap date!

@@davidcomora I use Fluidmaster or Korky brand or Kohler OEM flappers...I suspect Kory and or fluidmaster actually makes them anyway. The water tower with the snap in flapper in the back, ya have to make sure you have it proper height, otherwise doesn't work properly. Ya just stretch the thin part that goes into the holder, it snaps right in place...Water quality has a big influence on the flapper and the base it seals against last, for sure. I replaced my one Kohler seat with a new Kohler, using the tool kits from Kohler, inserts went rigth in, now I have a new seat that closes on it's own slow like, no more dropping it. the installation kit from Kohler makes it easy

@davidcomora yes I got the screw spinning and loose then i lifted it about 1/4 high,.I put a glove to protect the porcelain from the steel hammer on toilet and the back of the hammer threw the screw. then I hit the steel hammer with plastic mallet it will raise it for me as I hit the steel hammer with the mallet.. so the steal hammer prys it up as I hit it with mallet.. it came off easy I struggled to use the recommended tools by kohler.. they weren't rigid, they were bending too much.. I used the steel hammer as a pry bar it worked flawlessly if u hit it with plastic mallet.. thank you for your help it took 2 weeks to go back was done in a 1 hr

You missed a step on the anchor inserts. First tighten with lock and flat washers and then just the locking washer. If you overtighten the anchors they will break! VERY BAD IDEA TO REPLACE THE ANCHORS WITH CHEAP ONES!! You will never get them out and they will spin like hell when you try to drill them out.

Unfortunately, I didint watch oyur video to the very end, when you tell that Kohler's parts are not worth it. So I ordered the kit from Amazon, just to find that the anchors were loose inside my holes: they are 6 mm in diameter and my holes are 9 mms. Now, I have been trying to find your Expansion Nuts #10-31, 1 1/16 in Miami and I cant find them. Neither in Home Depot, Ace Hardware or Ster Brothers. Can yu give me a hit as to where to find the hardware you are showing in your video, both the but and the screws? I'll be most thankful. Im about to get crazy trying to solve this!!! A toilet from Hell, indeed.
