Omg!!! This really really worked!! I used some massage oil from CVS and the back of a wide toothed comb. It was SO painful at first but I tried to do 15-20 mins on each leg. Sometimes I couldn’t do it every day because it was so sore from the day before but after about a week it got much better and now it’s gone. If I feel the area getting a little tight I preemptively “scrape” it just to move everything around. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! It’s so nice to run again. 🏃🏽♀️🏃🏽♀️🏃🏽♀️

I ordered a Gua Sha massager on Amazon and used it once last night for maybe 10-15 minutes. I used it with baby oil since that’s what I had on hand. I woke up with some redness on the posterior area which seems normal. I decided to go for a light 2 mile run today and had NO PAIN either before during or after the run. This legit works. I’m no expert but in my running journey I had to overcome the same problem. David’s technique here works wonders. Like you I wanted answers. Luckily my local running supplies shop helped. After going for a running gait analysis used when your purchasing shoes we discovered that my foot rotates inward and I land each step on my last two to three toes ball joint. Fore foot running. So walk on my heals for 3 mins x3 sets on my rest days and bought running shoes to elongate the tibialis tendon slight build up on the outer edge of the soles. Also bent knee calf raises to strengthen the soleis muscle. Also one big reveal was that the shop see this a lot (right leg only posterior shin splints). Our area uk countryside has convex old roads and we’re taught to run towards traffic. But as the road slopes away this makes that tendon short on every run. Hope this helps too! 👍

@@zkhater63 hi zyad, this was about two years ago and I haven't had the issue recur agai , so I can't recall totally accurately how long I kept up with the scraping. I'd say it was about 2-3 weeks consistently, combined with rest and stretching regularly. Also calf raises helped a lot too. I think a major factor as well for me was trying out different types of running shoes and seeing what works best for your particular anatomy. I've been though all sorts now - from high cushion, high drop shoes to neutral minimum drop, and everything in between. What I eventually found to work best for me - contrary to what I expected - was actually NOT to use supported shoes but rather go with a more neutral shoe like ASICS novablast. Since going the more neutral route and stretching correctly before each run, shin splints have been totally gone for me. Your mileage may vary and the shoes that work for me may very well not suit you and the specific anatomy of your feet. But I would definitely recommend trying as many different types of running shoes as possible and ideally get some professional fitting advice at a running shop. Hope it works out for you

@@Redeemh Sorry guys, I never knew these responses were here. Chicago 2017 was my first marathon and I crashed and burned for several reasons but not just shin splints. I tried this method and even had dry needling that year but there was/is no magic cure. My shin splint problems come back periodically but I seem to be able to control them now. For me and not necessarily everyone, I think that shin splints and Achilles injuries have a lot to do with arch support. Orthotics actually helped to cure my Achilles problem but then a new pair actually caused my shin splints. To keep my feet from falling into a rut (so to speak), I rotate shoes. I have at least 6 different brands with different arch support and heel drops to keep my lower legs and feet active. I also use inserts for my arch support. I do have my favorites for shoes and support; however, I feel the rotation helps me.

@@zkhater63 I would say I have to be extremely careful with increasing my mileage at running. There were times in which I thought the shin splints completely healed out but from one moment to the other they were back again because I ran a little bit more or maybe faster as well. So I try to focus on stretching and foam rolling before and after my runs and listen to my body if I need more rest or if I'm ready to go for the next run.

I do try to avoid the bone. Update: After some more time the bruising is almost gone, my shin splints feel alot better, only the right leg is still a bit achy. Hi David. Want to thank you so much for this video. My daughters always having trouble with shin splints and this has turned out to be the info we needed to beat them. Their toes turn in just like you showed. I have an unrelated question if you happen to know, since you are the smartest guy on the internet. I'm wondering if a track runner can / should lift weights to build leg muscle while getting back to high school track after a year off from running. Or, since lifting weights breaks down muscle that then needs to rebuild, is it best to not lift weights while trying to build running back up.
@davidduncan12263 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! Definitely not the smartest guy on the internet but I'll take it 🤣. Two things need to happen, they need to get their body use to running again which should be done carefully and a somewhat slow transition back to full running/training intensity. If not, injuries are likely. As far as improving speed, field and track training doesn't really improve speed for well trained athletes, the main purpose is to condition your body for endurance and running form/technique. Weightlifting (especially squats & hip flexor exercises) is by far the most effective way to improve top speed. If they're trying to do both lifting and running at the same time that can definitely be done. I'd recommend working out legs 3 times but with a low enough intensity that you either don't get sore or it's minimal. Lifting heavier weights for low reps is a good way to do that.

hey man, I just started trying your method out and I have two questions: 1. the best time for me to do it would be in the morning, as soon as I wake up, or after I work out. I know that you recommended before the workout, but if I have to choose between these two, which is best? 2. how contracted should be my calves? Should I just use a support for my foot and do it with the normal contraction or should I deliberately tighten my calf? Thanks in advance.
@davidduncan12268 жыл бұрын
It's probably best if you do it in the morning so that everything is loosened up throughout the day. And your ankle should be bent back with medium tension but not really flexed. You just want the calve muscle tight.

@David Duncan I've done the treatment for more than 10 days, it seemed like the pain went away, I managed to do 65 miles w a day off, so I was really happy with that, but then yesterday appeared again, and today. It's not posterior anymore, do you recommend me visiting a doctor? Thanks for the treatment tho, it works great on the posterior.
@davidduncan12265 жыл бұрын
Are you scraping the whole shin (anterior and posterior)? A couple things to consider, if your muscles are too tight it puts undo stress on then tendons causing you to get shin splints so it will be a recurring issue until you start stretching and getting the flexibility you need. Also, it sounds like you're doing a lot of running. Try doing the treatment I talk about in the video and don't run at all for 7-10 days then slowly easy back into running on soft turf. If you're worried about losing your cardio you can use a bike or row machine or something else like that in the meantime.
@davidduncan12265 жыл бұрын
And one more thing, do this for 10mins before you run, that seemed to really help me.

Hey David I was wondering if you stopped running for two weeks to scrape it out or you continue to run
@davidduncan12263 жыл бұрын
I stopped running. I think with injuries like this it's best to take a break from it until the pain/soreness is gone from the injury for about 1-2 weeks and then slowly start training again. So for running, I'd start with cleats on soft grass. Only run for about 10mins (not including warm up). Gradually increase intensity and duration from there. Just make sure you back off if you feel the pain coming back at all. That's the optimal way to do it but I know some people can't afford to take that much of a break and it can still work even if you don't. But the likelihood of it not working will be a lot higher.

When I performed it for the second time (about 5 minutes on each leg) I experienced throbbing on both legs - does this mean it is not working or is this part of the process? Hey David I read through many of these comments and it looks like they are very positive review. I have started to try this but wanted to ask a question. My pain is mostly on the interior portion right above and behind the ankle bone. When I run it starts off fine but about 15 minutes or so in this part of my ankle starts to throb and just gets worse and worse and I continue. The reason I ask is this is a bit lower on the leg than where you were scraping and I am not even sure if this is shin splints. I have been running for about 8 months and worked my way up to 10 miles on my large days and 3-5 most every other day. I have been totally out of commission for weeks because of this pain that is not even there when the run starts. What do you think?
