Painting Demonstration Excerpt from the program "Monet's Waterlilies" from Episode #102 of the Emmy-Award winning PBS Series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop.
www.daviddunlop.com
In this excerpt, David visits the enchanting village of Giverny, 45 miles northwest of Paris, which was the last home of Claude Monet. Monet first moved to Giverny in 1883 at the age of 43 and lived in his specially designed home and gardens until the end of his life in 1926. David describes the evolution of Impressionism from its experimental beginnings with Monet and his friends working in the Gleyre studio in Paris in 1862 -- Sisley, Renoir, Bazille, Pissarro - to its later stage (and beyond) of explosive color, loose brushwork, complementary color effects, vivid sunshine and sensual delight. David discusses and demonstrates Monet's methods as a mid-career Impressionist at Giverny and his evolution into expressionism with his carefully developed and cultivated waterlily garden as his inspiration. David will discuss and demonstrate Monet's painting process, his philosophy and lasting influence on painting as he pursued sensation with color. In paint, David will present Monet's aggregative techniques and his revolutionary new language for releasing color from the outlines of static shapes.
Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop (Seasons One and Two) is an innovative, lively and entertaining Emmy® and CINE Golden Eagle Award winning PBS series that takes you to the actual locations in France, Italy and the United States that inspired the great artists Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, J.M.W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, Francesco Guardi, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Winslow Homer, and the Hudson River artists to create some of their most iconic works. These half-hour programs explore the lives, techniques and inspiration of these master artists through a combination of discussion and demonstration in the beautiful locations that inspired them. Inspired by David Dunlop’s infectious enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge, Landscapes Through Time combines art, history, travel, philosophy, science and technique to explore the lives and art of a wide range of different artists, creating a new way for artists as well as a general audience to experience and visually participate in the power and magic of the act of artistic creation.

Hey, I'm a figurative painted who specializes in figures and portraits but fancied spending a few months playing with landscapes. That was by far the most intellectual and inspiring tutorial I've come across. You've actually made me understand the value of the colour wheel (something that four years in art higher education did not), and the different tools I will need to portray space. Thank you very much. Can't wait to have a go myself.

Very good indeed. Must grab my easel, paints and canvas when I'm back from my holidays. Very inspired now. I especially liked the first seemingly messy background but then it evolves into this blue-ish reflection of the background. Sometimes standing close to a painting one can see that it is just messy and easy little blobs of paint here and there, but taking some distance, the whole painting comes together as a true masterpiece. Very well done! I like.it big time.
