I suppose Mr Dunlop used a thick watercolour rag paper (board), of 640 gsm or so, and then double primed it with transparent acrylic sealant. It makes the surface water resistant and suitable for negative painting (lifting the paint off the paper). Same method, but with different means, was used during the Golden Age of the watercolour.

Interesting video, thanks for posting. I rarely comment on you tube but Turner didn't paint watercolours like this?, I'd like to know where you got your information? I'm sorry to say, you seem to be making most of this up. He didn't paint watercolours using acrylic primer on paper and then lifting out, which is what you seem to be doing? he would layer watercolour washes on the paper first then paint detail on top. scrubbing out was with small brushes, a small natural sponge, sometimes a cloth, his nails and a blade. He would use gum arabic and some body colour where he required it. he also used coloured cards and then chalk for his Venice work. you mention tube paints, he also didn't use tubes on his travels as I understand. he visited Venice in 1819,1833 and 1840. tube paints were invented and released in 1841.

Very interesting video. Did you coat your paper with matte medium so it would be easier to lift the paint?
@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt7 ай бұрын
Hi, pattyschwarz! Thank you for writing and for your question. David painted this on acrylic varnished watercolor paper - the smoother the surface the better. He varnished the 140 lb. Arches hot pressed watercolor paper with Golden’s Polymer Gloss Varnish and then attached the dried paper to the board with tape. He also like to use Bristol Plate paper.Warm regards, David and Connie

This was a gouache painting. Nicely done but not a watercolor. Btw. When he was travelling Turner used Watercolor boxes with small pans. He surely didn‘t mix pigments and gum arabic when on the road.

I noticed that too. He paints thickly as if going from very dark to light. The medium almost behaves like acrylic. Not very Turner-esque.

🙆🏻♀️🤦♀️ That's watercolor, not oil paint! Eesh 😖
@TheColtssb412 жыл бұрын
You needed a pencil sketch for this? Exactly what was "watercolor" about this technique? Only the paints used, that's all. You can use any type of paint with this technique. Which is why in my opinion Turner should not be included in great watercolorist list! And why this "sketch" as well, is not good watercolor...

This sets a bad example for those aspiring to paint good traditional watercolours. It is using watercolours as gouache. Turner did not paint watercolours like this. The beautiful luminous quality of translucent watercolours is entirely lost. Totally misleading.
@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt Жыл бұрын
Dear geoffivory - Thank you for watching the program and for writing to you. It is not possible, of course, in a short response to your comment, to delve into the many experimental styles of the many artists, including Turner, who painted during what some people refer to as the Golden Age for British Watercolor, from around 1750-1850 - and today’s artists as well. Many artists, such as Turner and John Sell Cotman, for example, used both heavy and translucent watercolor paint, gouache, watercolor and ink washes, scratching and scraping of the pigment on their paper, and different brushes and cloths to create different marks, and reed pens to draw precise lines in watercolor - many different techniques. As you mention, Turner also created so many beautiful translucent watercolors - we love those as well! We have also enjoyed the many sketchbooks at Tate Museum to experience the many different types of watercolors created by Turner (www.tate.org.uk/art/research-publications/jmw-turner/essays-g2010028). Again, in our series Landscapes Through Time, we have attempted to capture something of the spirit and philosophy of the artist and have discussed different techniques of the artists, not an exact copy of a painting. Kind regards, David and Connie
