Lyon Funiculars!
I visit Vieux de Lyon, home of two funicular railways (of which one was temporarily closed). But did you know Lyon once had as many as five railways, and that you can still ride one of the other three?

“Four-vee-air,” je pense. :D Plus, there was once a Youth Hostel between St Just and Minimes. To save climbing, the lazy way of getting there was to take the F1 to St Just and walk downhill. Then coming back, we would walk downhill to Minimes, if we were lazy. Actually it was slightly quicker to fall down the steps of the cliffside going back. :D

I always find funicular systems interesting, especially since New Zealand only has one; the Wellington cable car. Incidentally the Wellington cable car has five stations instead of just two.

8:21 It looks crossed eyed with its tongue hanging out and very happy about it. Party on dude! The Glasgow Subway was first proposed as a cable system with each car permanently attached, like the Great Orme Tramway and like this. It was finally built with grippers that could attach and detach at will from the cable. Edinburgh had an extensive cable car network. They had no electric trams at all. There was very little known about it and for many years one of the best reference sources was a hand typed thesis deposited in the Central Reference Library. There were three or four cables from three or four steam driven winding houses. Where streets were cobbled, tram signs would be made using different coloured granite ( usually red ). The cable speed was the speed of the system, and was set by statute to the nearest fraction of an mph: I think 12 1/4 or even 12 1/3 were statuted. Where a tram would change from one cable to another, at a junction, it could unofficially ungrip and coast through the junction and regrip, although officially there were cables operating off spur gears at half speed to haul the tram onto the next cable route but this meant more effort gripping and ungripping in a short stretch. The cables ran in a slotted tube in the road and the grip descended into it. To anyone on the outside, the rails looked exactly like London's centre slotted +ve feed for the electric trams. But to be clear, London had no cable cars. Well, to appease pedants, one company actually experimented with them for a spell, but that failed early on. A friend actually acquired two old cable cars, which were being used as sheep refuges in a field in Selkirk. They even had their old destination boards, which were themselves a revelation as no one knew the actual colours or materials of the boards. The cars proved to be pretty rotted, almost immovable and were dismantled, the bogies and salved bodies were used to reconstruct an electric tram which itself was a converted cable car and had been used as a holiday home.

Thank you, Neil, had no idea that Edinburgh had cable cars for its tram network. Appreciate your great information.

Intresting video and also good to see one of the former funicular lines being reused for the metro even with the same tracks! I wonder where else in the world does this phenomenon exist?

another funicular with intermediate stations (3 to be precise) is Fløibanen in Bergen, if you've never been there, it's really worth the trip. Tickets for an intermediate stop are less expensive then to Fløyen on the top. It's a nice walk up, too.

Fascinating; is that a first - the funicular-replacement bus? I can't see that happening at Folkestone or Bridgnorth! Technically, the F1 seems more like the kind of rope-haulage which was a regular part of the early UK railways - Stockton & Darlington, Liverpool Lime st, Camden etc.. Incidentally, where the cars pass at Minimes, does each car keep to its own side, or do the up cars and down cars always keep left- (which would be easier for passengers, not having to check which platform to wait on; but I can't see how they'd do that without the ropes getting tangled up. I note that the train seemed to have a driver - or was he more of a DLR -style 'train-captain'?

The cars don’t change platforms, they go up or down at the same side. A light at the entrance show where to go for what direction...

Hi,nice video. Did you know that the Funicular who served as base for the Lausanne Metro M2 opened in 1877 between Ouchy and Flon ? So,this should make it the second oldest Metro in the world,in the smallest City with a real subway...and with a gradient of 120 1/1000 it is the steepest rubber-tired Metro worldwide...line C of Lyon is 170 1/1000 ,but not on tires.

I didn't know that! I could do a whole video on "what's the second oldest metro system in the world" - there are plenty snapping for the title. I still think Budapest wins (not biased at all...)
