I remember the first time I set foot in a “real” studio. Their raw tracks sounded better than my mixed ones. Focus on getting a great recording and you won’t need as much post production.

Speaking of Fundamentals, I've been trying to put together a logical list for the process of going working a mix. So I'm putting together one for my self as I gain insights from other sources. You are my second source. You have laid out a logical process to step through in order to avoid getting into a mix and bouncing around and changing things that could put in circles and possible messing up what you've already done in the mix. Thanks!!!

I actually like to find isolated studio tracks and analyze those. So, for example, if I like a Metallica guitar tone, I'll literally see if I can find the studio track of just the rhythm guitars and put it in a frequency analyzer. You still need to use your ears, but it's amazing how much you can learn from just analyzing a track by itself and EQ matching your own material to it. You can realize you had way too little 2k or too much 5k. And that can be a guide to your mixing choices going forward.

I guess it is not a good idea to "copy" the main fundamental frequency from the reference if your kick or bass playing in another key. Your comparison process is very elaborately. With a little experience you can "see" the important areas in the analyzer and if you only use your ears than is it a better learning process...

Try this... Find you an album that you love and analyze the kick fundamental for a handful of songs on that album. I'm curious what you find! My guess is while it's possible the kick fundamental may change a tad on a song or two, I think you'll find that rarely is the kick changed on a song to song basis. Totally a general thought though... It depends on the genre and of course the engineer.
