The coolest part of this story is not the fairy tale-ish view of realization, but that this guy went back to his job and just let it happen...he did not say "I am the self and now I must sit in front of people, wear a robe, change my name and gather devotees." I went back to my job the next day...and yes things flow better...but not always...tragedy, pain and suffering still exist, but they may be a bit easier to deal with...

@@humanoid144 Whatever we want to do as per our egoistic plans never materialises. If we simply do not resist any happenings, taking them to be part of the divine plan, the lesser the resistance the more we find peace with life. Happiness is nothing but being at peace with the experiences we come across day today be it pleasurable or painful. For example if one wishes to quit smoking, it never happens inspite one's efforts to do the same. Likewise if someone wants to meditate regularly getting up at early hours, this also cannot be followed however hard one wishes to start the practice. Whether it is a good or a bad deed, nothing is in our hands and everything happens according to some divine plan. We should never feel guilty or pride for whatever happens through us. This means life is simply being lived through us. Resistance leads to frustration, anger and sadness. No free will. We are only the tools through whom Universal Being experiences Life. Period.

hello David, i don’t even remember how i first got a copy of your book “be as you are”, but i remember it was more than 20 yrs ago and i was in college. i actually bought this book three times because i remember losing one copy at a subway station (it fell into the train tracks!), giving one copy to my uncle who speaks Tamil (he is a doctor and works too much, so I tried to help him get some proper perspective on life by giving him the book), and now I still having one copy in my living room. i was in Arunachala in October of 2017 and i was hoping that i would bump into you there but alas i didn’t. however, i did somehow end up in Seshadri’s temple by coincidence and then had a fantastic dream. i recorded the experience in a poem called Mountain Path (see below). anyway, thank you for your book, which prompted me on this path. . you misled me, so that i would come to you, but when i arrived, i was too afraid to come inside. . in an act of kindness i bought flowers from a poor old woman, i offered them to you, not knowing your priest would spread white ashes on my forehead and anoint me with your gift. . that night, a great storm occurred- lightning and thunder i had not seen since childhood. in a dream, a woman sat next to my bed and asked me ‘who am i’

Wow Andy! I first stumbled upon this book 'be as you are' by David Godman in my father's bedroom. At that time, I had just lost my mother and I was 12-13. I liked the 'Question-Answer' format of the book. I liked how Bhagwan Ramana directed every question to the only real question 'Who am I?'. At first, I found it amusing, how a man can dilute out every question to the simple question 'Who am I?', but later on with years I realized how beautiful this practice is. Years later, I learnt the Sudarshan Kriya from Sri Sri Ravishankar and I experienced unprecedented bliss and calmness. And, I remembered David's conversations with Ramana. Extremely grateful to Ramana Maharshi and David Godman and Jussi for this amazing video!

Thanks for the very interesting talk ,I don't claim to be Self Realised ,no one can anyway,but I have noticed in my life since becoming a truth seeker that many strange coincidences have occurred similar to the ones you mention,I call them Grace,I am getting on in years,of late I have had the strange feeling that I am being guided in my everyday life on the mental and physical level,I find myself doing things that I had no intention of doing at all ! that turn out to be beneficial.and a feeling that maybe I should relax and just let things be....... this is a small example, going back nearly 50 years after experiencing an uplift in consciousness ,I noticed all the traffic lights were green whenever I was driving in my local area for some time,and driving was a joy instead of a pain,it sounds silly but true,very noticeable, there was a flow of existence in everything and a feeling of peace,unfortunately it didn't last! I mean traffic lights are never green are they? certainly not now, one could say I was given the green light............and I have had to continue the seeking..

David Godman I’m at the very start of my spiritual journey at 45. I have only experienced similar things as your self realized friend when engrossed in writing prose or poetry. It’s a process of waiting for the words to come to me. Then, when I read what I’ve written, it’s unreal to me! It’s as if there is a well to dip your bucket into to attain what you place your concentration on. If through meditation or self realization one could have access to this well, then creativity would skyrocket in me! It is fleeting bliss now...

David, I've been listening to Nisargadatta, given the three levels/states in question (mind, consciousness and then the all encompassing absolute), is it logical to assume that we cannot know further than ourselves as consciousness ('level 2') knowing itself and the experience of mind? In other words, although we maybe the parabrahman/supreme state we simply cannot know it, and can only know the consciousness level that knows itself as "I am"?. In which case why speculate at all in an unfalsifibale state?! (the absolute) It seems that only consciousness is verifiable by empirical experience? Thanks for reading x Namaste 😂🙏💟

there is an inclination towards the supernatural in the Hindu culture, and not only... Harmony means everything goes well but to know this one has to know the opposite too. Self realization... is that something one can achieve?! There is no reward to be expected following the looking, seeing and understanding the truth; the 'reward' is in the activity itself- there are no extraordinary advantages to the one who sees! Who is left to see 'good and bad' when reality reveals itself?! Whether the swimming pool builds by itself [miracle!] or the manager in the story has to put in a lot of work to build it is irrelevant to pure awareness- the manager and his pool are in time and sooner or later both will be history. These stories are nice but have nothing to do with reality.

In addition, do we still need to do the blood tests to examine our health, or do we get ill harder or easier, after the Self realization, since the Self takes care of all aspects, how and what do we dress up, what do we eat, do we eat meat of innocent animals, how do we fall in love, etc.....all these primitive energies and needs must be clarified !

Spiritual path and life are the same thing. It’s like being aware over the experience and not dividing the two parts of life. The best thing to do when you get your first “big” realisation is to integrate it in your daily life - your life will be the same, but noticing small parts in your life that perhaps could change is a decision consciousness will change. Your willingness to be more conscious is you participating in life. Everything comes when it’s supposed to, we are many beings on the same plane in different consciousnesses, and we carry each other, like the One we are. You are my friend, as am I yours. And being is all that is required, so who you chose to be is your free will. I love you, and may you be blessed on your journey

Question this. Realization is not simply happy coincidences and statements of perception. Ego elimination comes at great cost. Realization is revolution. Even true words only point in the direction. And words tinged with ego only misdirect. If there is still the need to convey this experience, then one has stepped out from the unitive state into a place where speech is heard. Question this.
@TheKstuart6 жыл бұрын
Thanks David, I find all your talks valuable. Three points should be clarified: 1 - Ramana stated "The Self cannot be the doer." so it is incorrect to say that "the Self is doing this or that instead of me". In fact, the jnani does not identify as the body, so that would not make sense for a realized person to say. 2 - Just because someone reports that they have had a realization that persists, does not mean that they correctly assessed their realization. For example, "Andrew C." :) 3 - A hugely popular myth is that after realization or even after a first temporary experience, that one has :"the Self doing things instead of me, which it is now doing correctly, instead of my flawed human choices". This evidences misunderstanding. Of course, "me" is the obvious mistake, but beyond that, is the further mistake that something changes after realization. But, in reality, Ramana (and Sadhu Om) both emphasized that the nothing changes except one's perspective. Ramana used the example of the person on the train carrying their luggage on top of their head. When the person stops "doing" and puts the luggage down on the floor of the train, nothing has changed. Beforehand, the train was carrying the luggage, and after it is put down, the train is carrying the luggage - the only change being "Oh, I really am not carrying it - nor have I ever carried it". Sadhu Om's metaphor of the room with two walls that form a corner, makes the same point, as does David Carse in his book. This idea of "the Self doing things" perhaps comes from an allergy against ever mentioning "Ishwara". Ramana was clear that - in the world, where things are "done", the only doer is Ishwara, and that was ratified by his disciples that David quotes in his comments on his blog page "God the scriptwriter".

I can throw another interpretation of doing facts: "you do what comes from your seeing, not your thinking. There is not any "me" involved in seeing" Some realization is only judgement amongst every thing, very mental. I was lead to that by reading too much spiritual books. Now i begin to undertstand how fool and stupid i am.

Does this mean that after you get Self realized every aspect of your life gets just perfect, for instance you were having problems in conducting the sex life with your wife prior to Self realization and then all of a sudden the Self helps you to perform at your best ?
