Build this awesome helmet yourself, or pick one of four additional helmet designs included with the template! In this video I show you how simple it is to make a genuine, metal helmet with tools you likely already have in your garage. In addition to the design in the video, the template includes four other designs (five total). Build this "Spartan Wraith" helmet, a Traditional Greek helmet, a 300 Style Spartan helm, a Viking helm, and a Roman helmet...all from the same template! Be sure to check out my other videos for all different kinds of armor

I want to thank you most sincerely. All my life I have yearned to make, not buy, make my own armor. And the idea laid dormant in my mind for decades, until I came across your videos. It filled so many blanks about how to actually fabricate the steel. I won't be using any of your templates. I think they are awesome, but I think I should rely on my own design. I just wanted to thank you however, for pointing me in the right direction! EXCELSIOR!

It's also not as expensive as you might think, particularly if you plan on making a hobby out of this. The tools are a little bit of an up-front investment, but they'll last for a very long time and have other uses. The metal itself is quite cheap. Apart from that, I've learned from my own experience making mock-up boffer lightsabers that making something that looks good isn't so much about talent or skill so much as trial-and-error and patience.

I can imagine them running into an army with MY attempt at this design also, actually that would be equally effective but instead of them being scared to death they all started laughing to death :) But I had fun trying anyway and that was worth a lot too, I don't feel the need to have something to show afterwards, the process in itself was reward enough for me! And next time perhaps will be better. Damn, I lack that piece of artist in me unfortunatly. I have to focus on armour that is without those extra artistic pieces, although all armouring need some artistic skill there are those that need more than others!

+David Guyton Awesome tutorial! 2 short questions: - Which type of steel are you using? Is it rustproof? - And what to use as rivets? Everything I tried so far just bent...
@DavidGuyton
@DavidGuyton 8 жыл бұрын
This is regular sheet steel you can get from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. It's not stainless and will rust if you leave it outdoors. For rivets you can use any kind of metal rid cut to length. I sometimes just use nails. In this case, it's 1/4" copper rod. It just takes some time getting used to how rivets work. If they are always bending, you probably are cutting them too long. Try them a little shorter and see how they do.

A thing that has always perplexed me even though I work as an artist and I love physics is just how fluid hard surfaces really are. The steel that you're working with, for example, is a testament to that fact. As you are molding, refining, and shaping your piece, it's almost like working with very stiff clay --at least from my perspective as I watch this thing take shape.

David Guyton heating up till red and then buffing with a brass wire brush in an angle grinder gives a really mellow aged brass/bronze look. The heat and the friction fuse a thin layer of brass onto the steel. Combined with oil blackening the results are stunning. The brass is on thr high spots and the low spots stay black. Been doing lots of experimenting with patina on my projects!

Nice! I just discovered your videos. I love metal shaping, I'm getting a bit more practice and improving and loved picking up a few tips from you. Definitely going to use a bit of rubber between the anvil and the piece. Makes total sense. And the socket is a nice thing. Sometimes you end up using something that is lying around and it works. The helmet is gorgeous! Thanks.

I was waiting to get to the teeth to see how on Earth they were done. A socket, chisel and hammer. WOW. Mind blown. Just one question: How did you cut out the eyes? I'm guessing the tin snips, but how did you make the initial incision?
@DavidGuyton
@DavidGuyton 7 жыл бұрын
Actually the eyes were started with a large drill bit. Put twp holes close together and you can snip out the little piece of metal between them, making a bigger hole. That hole is large enough to get the snips in there and start cutting. After you get all the metal out that you can, use a Dremel tool or files to perfect the shape

Thanks. I figured it might be something like that.

Helmet is really nice work, I think super heating your flat pieces then rubbing them down with dirty motor oil would yield a much more menacing look. I know this will warp the pieces but given they are being smithed anyway it shouldn’t matter. I definitely think that technique would also add nice contrasts between shadows and direct lighting.

I remember the first time I met an SCA blacksmith back in the last century, he was one of a very small number of people doing anything like this. Now it seems like an entire industry has developed around this kind of stuff.

Wow dang i'm glad i checked the conversion chart for gauge to mm. I was going to make my helmet out of 2mm plate. 14 gauge. Well i did the ridge already. It does feel solid, so that's fine. And yea i'm going to do the domes out of something way thinner. Also. Yep i do sorta regret making my own template. Specially since i have apparently seen this video before. Should just have gotten the templates. Actually. I still probably should. But this helmet is so close to being finished that i may as well complete it. Got addicted to the making so will do another soon too. Or gauntlets, those are cool.
