When we hide our actions or selves from God, we also go deaf to Him and His word. We ignore and rebell to do our own will as David did here, and do not consider God until and unless we are confronted to do so.

That David and his men wanted to fight, they could had been wiped out before the war started, but the Philistine men were loyal to their king, requesting these (their enemy) not be allowed to participate, and besides did not trust them to turn in the heat of the battle so they would lose again and Achish would have egg on his face

I always thought this word should had been spelled w an N inot an M. CON - meaning liar, faker, dishonest, crominal, cheater - then promise. In other words a breaker of promise of royal words.
