The reason some people dont want to be filmed is because unfortunately a lot of programmes about antiques of the last 20 years or so have not helped the trade unfortunately the TV only concentrates very much on the money side of things and they never mention about the experience and knowledge which has to be built up over years if the public really had a clue how a lot of these programmes are made they wouldn't watch as it has nothing to do with reality. The antique trade is a wonderful and fascinating business and it is about time all the constant TV shows stopped as they are doing it to death.

For example, I paid £2 for a vintage Liverpool goalkeeper's jersey and sold it for £80 on eBay. A vintage East German typewriter from the same charity shop paid £50 and sold it on eBay for £100. Job lot of Epson ink cartridges for £10 sold the lot for £60. I've also bought from my local council recycling shops and made money from the purchases. So many professional dealers are fed up with television and how it has ruined the trade, even 25 years ago I had a sign in the window of my shop "No film crews". You may not realise but the price for an item is determined before filmng along with the vast discount. In the real world 15% is the most any dealer can discount not the 40% and 50% we see on TV. And it is TV, these programes are for entertainment - the question has to be asked that if the specialists (they are no where near antiques experts, after 40 years in the trade this is clear to me and most other dealers) were any good at their job why would they need to do TV? These programes are cheap to make and easy to sell over the world, in no way do they reflect the real antiques trade - who would buy at a market and sell at auction when the item was probably bought at an auction originally? This is why dealers do not want to be a part of this farce and 90% of those that you do see on TV are either new to the trade or hobbyists.

I have filmed flea market stalls and similar at transport festivals in the past. I am aware that some people prefer not to be included. I can tell by their body language, or by prior conversations. The ones that amuse me are those who are out of shot but having spotted the camera come right up to the lens, demanding not to be filmed. If that's what they wanted then why walk up to a man with a camera? I always try to observe people's dignity and desires when filming in public.
