David’s advice is spot on, his system for increasing value especially for smaller less expensive vintage items, has worked for me. I have bought and sold vintage and antique goodies for a long time. My thrill is in the learning discoveries I make, the “built in” history lessons that always happen, never a dull moment! Of course, the adrenaline rush of the sale of something I bought for a song, and sold for a profit, is always tops! And I do see that same sparkle in David’s eyes too-! Thank you David, I appreciate and love the time you take to teach, guide, and demonstrate, and as much as I think I know, I know very little, so please keep the shows coming. Cheers, Shae

Where would you recommend buying these smaller cost items if you don't mind me asking?... I'm seriously thinking of becoming semi-retired and having some fun with it but also making some money by buying and selling antiques as I've always had an interest in it.

@@davidholgate123 Hello David. It is said “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Often my finds are at yard and boot sales, and estate sales. Thrift stores (op shops) don’t yield as much as they used to especially post Covid. Wishing you well as you approach retirement!

David - I've often heard that one should NOT clean an item. The patina should show the character of the piece. When do you clean and when don't you? Thanks!

What are your thoughts on the ethics of buying and selling in a situation where you as a buyer are more knowledgeable than the seller? Suppose, for example, you're at an estate sale and see a piece that you are certain is worth $5,000.00. You ask how much the seller would like and they say they'll take $50.00. I've made similar purchases, not knowing what I was buying, and when I found out the actual value felt a bit guilty. When one knows the value at the time of purchase, is it incumbent on them to pay a "fair" price, taking into account the cost of finding the right buyer, etc.?

In a perfect world, this would be the way. But, then again would it ever be worthwhile putting the effort in to become knowledgeable about anything? Coincidentally, my latest video shows a £5 purchase from a car boot fair which turns out to be a 400 year old Chinese bronze!

Bits worth 50 quid add up. Bits costing a fiver and worth less add up too, unfortunately. As for this one, I found the maker's mark in about ten seconds flat - far easier than just having the design.

All I heard was: Making money off antiquing seems to be a matter of a) finding a chump who doesn’t know what they have and bilking them with a low buyer’s price and b) finding another chump with money to burn who doesn’t do his research and can be talked into a higher price

I think you’re commenting on the wrong video?

You can describe all you like, but all the buyers, want valuable things, for peanuts. Expert research is getting me, nowhere. Too many, low-ballers. Can't even get a fair, profit.
