To everyone out there in KZbin land. I just wanted to give a big shoutout to David. When that man says his bees are gentle, you can take that statement to the bank! I installed 3 packages yesterday evening and I couldn’t believe how easy they are to work with. I did get stung twice. But I wasn’t wearing gloves and it was my fault because I crushed them! My daughter did a Facebook live video of the whole thing and she wasn’t wearing any protective gear. Enough said! Thank you David 👏👏👏!

Thanks for the great info. I've been watching your videos for months and your are very helpful. I did my first inspection today of 2 hives I installed last week. I saw exactly what yo have just shown except I did see my queen and actually watched her lay. It was amazing to watch. The other package absconded form the hive aprox. 4 days after installation, ( I assume just as they released the queen) They just packed up and moved out. Not a single bee left in the hive, but that's how it goes I guess. I'll repopulate it in a few weeks. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, and please keep up the good work.

What Dave forgets to mention is this. When you order 3lbs of bees, if they are shipped by USPS that 3lbs could very well be less than 2 lbs by the time it gets to you. Now account for the loss he just described and your 3lbs could actually be less than a pound as they keep dying abs you are waiting for new brood. Do not use USPS always over night them or buy locally.

I like to melt the wax and brush it on foundationless frames. Keep your hives as close to level as possible and they won't cross comb. Don't forget to give them 50/50 sugar water with Honey Bee Healthy for the first month too. I add a pollen patty during that time too.

Hi David, I received my bee package with a marked queen from you last thursday March 28. I did not have enough time or daylight to install immediately so I put the package directly into a hive body without installing it until about 16 hours later on Friday the 29th. The hive I installed the bees in was a deadout that I checked for disease. All the comb was from last year. Foolishly, I did minimal intervention on this hive over the winter with only putting some fondant in place in January when we we still having fairly mild temperatures. The last three weeks of February and into the first ten days of March we had over fifty inches of snow and temperatures dipping below zero and only rising to the teens most days, though some would get to in the twenties for a high. Needless to say in January when on checked on these bees they were fine, but when I came back from a trip to Tampa in March and the weather had warmed into the fifties this check revealed a dead hive with green mold on the bees and still lots of honey in the frames. So I installed your package bees into this hive after a diligent effort of removing deadout bees head first into the honeycomb by tweezers and brushing off any residual mold. No evidence of disease was proclaimed from my mentor so he gave me the ok to reuse the hive and frames. This is where my question begins: I installed the package as stated above and checked that the queen was released on Sunday, March 31st. Confirmed good release. Also started with a hivetop feeder with 1:1 sugarwater. On a quick hive inspection today, there were no eggs, but from what I could see that was due to pollen and sugar water placed in most fullsize comb. I really couldn't find a place for the queen to lay any eggs so I added a second brood box with plastic waxed frames not built out and placed the feeder back on top of the complete hive which is now two brood boxes and a hivetop feeder. Question; did I feed too early? Am I feeding too much? Could I be creating a situation where they may choose to swarm? I am in Central Washington on the Columbia River. The temos have been running in the 60's for highs and 40's for lows. No real precipitation. I have a kiddie pool with rain/snowmelt runoff for a water source in the yard. Your help is appreciated.

Just conducted my first hive inspection ever. Got a package 5 days ago. Langstroth with 1 brood box and one empty super. Had ultra bee in empty super but they’re not eating it, which is fine. They’re going through a lot of syrup which makes me happy. I put the queen cage on between two frames and was afraid they were gonna burr comb it. Being my first installation I was trying to get the bees in there in a timely manner and I’ve been thinking the spacing wasn’t right. That was one reason I did not wait a week. Other reason being it’s cloudy tomorrow and rain the next day so I wanted to be able to see the eggs with sunlight. Now this was my first inspection... bit nervous and first time handling bees on frames. As I feared it seems most of their time was spent on burr comb about the size of a cantaloupe. What’s worse is I did not find the queen and did not see eggs. A lot of clear liquid and pollen and nectar I guess. I removed the burr comb and put it in the empty super for them to harvest and removed the ultra bee. I didn’t wanna smoke my girls anymore and didn’t wanna keep them open for too long since they haven’t been here long. After I post this I’m gonna peak and see if they’re emptying the burr comb and then leave them alone. Soo my question is could I have just missed the queen and there’s not enough comb to lay yet? I remember I was also trying to install them somewhat quickly and the queen to my eyes wasn’t much different she seemed maybe small. But then again all of them are a little smaller than I thought. Should I wait a week and see what inspection #2 holds? I’m worried! Let the problem solving of beekeeping begin.. sure didn’t take long >.>. Thank you all.

Hello David, question about your bees/queens. Are your bees considered VSH? How well do they perform with mites? I remember you telling me your have treated now for a few year, but interested in knowing about the VSH or not. And where all your colonies come from. Did you start with swarms, or did you yourself buy bees to get started. Thank you

Do you recommend adding a frame of brood from an established hive to a package installation? I heard this helps avoid queen supersedure because the hive sees the brood frame as the queen is doing her job.

Hey Dave! Got my 4 packages in and lost of buzzing going on! Hope to do my first inspection of them this week when it warms up. My next question would be when to add boxes? I put all mine in 5 frame boxes, would I move them to an 8 or 10 frame when it’s time or just add another 5 frame?
@fezwhy
@fezwhy 5 жыл бұрын
How do you know when it's time to move your packages from a 5 frame to an 8 frame box? Or do you recommend to just keep in 5 frame nucs and put a super on top?
@lisavogel8346
@lisavogel8346 5 жыл бұрын
Dont super a nuc. When your nuc is filled with bees and all frames are drawn with comb and brood, move to an eight or ten frame deep. in most cases, if you made up the nuc with frames of brood and food from another colony, give it at least 3 weeks in the nuc. If you bought a nuc, your supplier should be able to tell you when it's time.

How long do you feed the bees after new package install?
@fezwhy
@fezwhy 5 жыл бұрын
Do you put any kind of insurance on the package bees you ship in case usps damages the box and the queen is dead? I have heard horror stories of USPS making mistakes and shipments getting mixed up causing the bees to be delivered almost a week after the date quoted. That's obviously out of your hands though.
