Gday Dave, Thanks for the great info. Very very informative! The “girls” are starting to ramp things up here in Australia. I fed a single brood box about 6 times with a Ceracell top syrup feeder through Winter as last season very average here. Stopped about a month ago as activity increasing. It’s been a very mild winter. My bees have tripled in number, at a guess, in that time. All about to kick off here soon, Cheers, 🍻

I use tanglefoot on my okra. We have fire ants and they will go up the okra stalks and sting the blossom to make the okra release sugars. It ruins the okra stalk, and can cut your okra production in half. Thanks for sharing this trick!! Oh yeah, I also pour ground cinnamon on the ground under the hive, and inside the hive too. The bees don't seem to mind, and the ants hate it.

My hive stands are 4x4s resting on cinder blocks that are resting in small mortar mixing tubs full of water. Works pretty well against ants so long as you don't let tall grass or weeds give them pathways around them. I believe in the boric acid too but I put mine in little drilled water bottles mixed with sugar water soaked in cotton balls as I saw in another video.

Bit of Dragon Fly trivia: Dragon Flies can't walk. After they reach the flight stage in their development their legs only function as graspers so they can land on, and hold things, but they can't walk.

Hello from Oz - thank you for another great video. I've made outdoor feeders like yours, using smaller drill holes, and we can't get resealable buckets, so have to replace the lids each time we fill, however, the sugar water is not seeping out, the bees seem to be feeding ok, (proboscis through the holes), but the syrup is not gather in the little wells of the support ring. Sorry for two comments David but as for the Drago Flies, put some big fish in the pond that eat daragon fly nymphs. It really does reduce the population to normal levels where they are not much of a problem. Yes they can be a huge problem when there numbers are to high because of pond problems. I can never work out why the swarm does not protect the Queen from Dragon flies. Its like the dragon flies have a radar for seeking them out.

Awesome. Ants will not leave my bees alone. So much rain the ants want dry territory. I have been pouring vinegar around my hive. Bees don't care but ants lose their way, they get lost. But if it rains it is gone. I am not certain what is blooming. My bees have been making a mad dash between rain squalls and are ill tempered. They do not want to be bothered. I just look to see if they are coming and going. I am not opening them up right now they are hostile. Sunny day no problem but it has been gloomy for a month.

I don't know if they eat bees or not but I do know that my Queens have always returned from their mating flights. Why do I mention this? Purple martins absolutely annihilate the dragonflies. Wants to purple martins leave the dragonflies become a problem. And I have seen the dragon flies actively waiting for the bees to come back so they can grab them

If your bees don’t consume all the sugar water in the winter, will they move it up into the honey super to make room for brood? My first year, the first take of honey was lighter colored than the next two, and I wondered if it was sugar water from the winter.

The tanglefoot is good because it doesn't really drip off like the other stuff I tried, cost a pretty penny but worth it I think. The first coat kind of soaked in, but now its like a bug death trap on the four legs.

Hey David I am wandering if all the Bee keepers who have ants as problems actually have weak bee colonies? I have kept and bred Bumble Bees and Honey bees for decades and I always make sure I have ants nests around. In all my time keeping bees I have never once had an issue with ants. Some one asked me just the other day if the ants they where watching hurt the bees and I said "nope" I even had a video up on why bees need ants. Ants feed on baby mites we cannot even see with out a microscrope if the ants where not there Mite numbers will go through the roof. All them baby mites would grow into adults. They do more good then harm. Well thats been my experience anyways. There is a Bees nest in an old ok tree its been there 15 years and there is always ants going up and down 24/7 So the wild bees seem to be fine with them as well.

Dragonflies eat tons of mosquitoes. Adult dragonflies eat adult mosquitoes and baby/larval Dragonflies eat baby/larval mosquitoes in the water. We have a small river channel behind our house that is semi stagnant part of the year. This is Florida so moquities can be horrid. Once Dragonflies start showing up in the summer here, the mosquito population goes way way down. I want to have bees..no doubt there will be dragonflies. I need to figure out a way they can all co-exist on our property because we need those Dragons to eat the mosquitoes. There is a healthy population of 'wild' honeybees around here so the dragons must not be eating all of them. I dont think Purple Martins would want to nest here because we have a huge population of Barred Owls on our property and the surrounding woods. Maybe the solution is just to have tons of bees so I could sustain some loss?
