I took your recommendation and installed the bug zapper in my backyard to reduce the moth problem. For the first couple of days, I found a lot of wax moths just pass out but not dead. So I replaced the bug zapper bottom cover with a plastic bag filled with some water and oil and used a rubber band to secure the practice bag. After one week, I got a thousand moth inside the practice bag trap. This week I will set up the hive beetle trap for all my 4 hives. Thank you, David!

I'm a fairly new subscriber and I don't do beekeeping at all. I never had any knowledge about bees whatsoever. But I really enjoy your videos because of their educational purpose. You have an excellent manner of explaining things thoroughly and there's so much to learn from your videos Dave. Thanks for your time and effort to help educate not only beekeepers but the casual audiences as well.

Avert, best ever, but apply it to the traps away from the hives and make sure you don't get any on the outside of the trap case. Bees don't like it, but it is a pesticide being used close to a food product which is why beekeepers won't talk about it. Avert is sometimes hard to get, but you can use OTC roach/beetle gels from big box stores. Just be sure to only get the stuff in the trap where it belongs and not on the outside of the case.

Hey Dave I’ve seen a lot of beekeepers scrap wax off and throw it on the ground. This helps the small hive beetles to multiply and make for a bad time for your bees. They need to carry a small bucket and save all that wax to melt down at the end of the season.

Don't know about Georgia, but down here in Florida a State Apiary Inspector can ding you for any substance in the hive not on their approved list. And that includes boric acid, of which I am a great fan. Dr. Jamie Ellis has a great video on SHB which you can also find here on KZbin. Overall, though, I enjoy your videos and plan to try your mini nuc idea in the spring!

@Hungry_Tree_Ghost
@Hungry_Tree_Ghost 2 жыл бұрын
They're attracted to the smell of your hive (wax, nectar, honey, pollen). I bought a hive last year, but wasn't able to secure a nuc until this year. Been good until today when I pulled out the inspection tray, and it had SHB larva, and beetles. Killed 3 of them, and dumped the contents of the tray in a paper towel. Rolled it up, and burned it. Apparently those beetles can smell the hive from 9 miles away, and they'll go looking for it.

All the neet ideas maybe somewhat helpful .But the biggest asset you have there is your location,Wide open lots of sunshine helps more than anything.Nukes most of the time can not defend them selves from attacks because they are like baby hives.Takes a good deal of time to get them up to the 40,000 or more bees they need.That time is a luxury you have down south but up north we do not have forever to build up our hives.And if we do not make it by August we have to decide if we will combine hives or not.Now the bug zapper is a gread things to hang around the place .Moths and best of all mosqitos .I hate those little buggers.

Hey Dave, I was wondering if a shb don’t die right off and it crawls out of trap. Won’t it expose the bees to the boric acid ? I would appreciate a reply. Thanks Mark Farlow
@Doxymeister
@Doxymeister 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not Dave, but from what I know about boric acid, the insect has to get it on their chitonous exterior shell or ingest it internally for it to affect them. I've used boric acid to control roaches, ants and rolly-polly's (wood lice) for many years--the key is in what you mix it with to attract the insect you want to kill. The bees won't be interested in the Crisco and I wouldn't think there would be enough boric acid on the exterior of the beetle to harm a bee when it pushes it out of the hive.

David, the beetle barn was placed in upside down. The trap is designed to allow beetles to the entrances, but not the bees. Upside down in a corner will trap double what you catch now. That's the problem with items that come with zero instructions.

I just installed my two nucs on Tuesday and when I checked my flow hive bottom drawer there were little black pellets of poop the thickness of pencil lead. I posted on Facebook and some suggested wax moth larva , others said cockroach, and others said earwig. I wasn't planning on doing my first hive inspection untill Sunday when its supposed to be warm. Is it possible for a fresh nuc to have wax moth larva? I used brand new black heavy dipped acorn on the sides of my 5 nuc frames. Everything i have read about wax moths seems to deal with stored equipment and or dying or dead hives. Thoughts?

Thanks for the video Dave. I have a question for you. What is your opinion of screened bottom boards as a way to control hive beetles?
@jsauerii
@jsauerii 6 жыл бұрын
I am getting less fond of them. If they are not sealed from the outside they allow pests unlimited access to the hives. If they can fall through it they can certainly get back in. I am finding loads of wasted pollen on them and lots of beetle larvae in them after only a few days. They give them a place to raise young the bees cannot reach when enclosed and a place for unlimited entry when open. Thats my experiences so far. If there was a sticky board or oil to drown then it would be better if still enclosed but I am going to do away with mine in favor of a new idea I have..

I tried salt before and it did not really help. I had to apply a lot and then it was for short term. All you have to do is to raise the PH of soil and not much can grow if the PH is high. I had a strip of soil between house and driveway and there was always weed growing. Salt did not help and weed started to grow again 1 month later, weed killer was the same and after a while new weed would grow again.. Finally I ended up to use Soda ash (or sodium carbonate) to raise the PH of the soil and that lasted almost 3 years after I applied a strong mix. All it does is raising the PH of the soil. Look for this that sells swimming pool supplies and read the ingredients of the chemicals that they sell for treating that swimming pool water.

Hello from Australia. Thanks for such great videos. I have 2 healthy hives. Both with brood box and 1 super. coming into winter, the supers on both hives have about 60-90% honey. One of my hives has a beetle trap base with vegetable oil that seems to be working well. Here is my problem. The outside frame of my honey super is only about 70% drawn comb on the exterior side and the bees havent progressed any further and so there is always a considerable number of SHB running over that one side of that frame with hardly any bees to control them. Im wondering what i can do to solve this problem. My second question is can the Beetle barns be placed on top of the honey super frames where i can see beetles moving around or only at the bottom. I placed a couple on the mesh base and the bees moved them out the front door. I do have a couple of beetle blasters on top of the honey supers as well but they seem to be only moderately effective at the moment. Thanks for any advise you can give me. Mark

DirtRooster showed one thing he uses is Swiffer sweeper replacement pads, placed on top of the frames. The bees will "fluff-up" the surface of the pad, and then when the beetles run across the surface, their legs get trapped in the fluffy surface. He says it works like a charm!

David I love the traps I got from you. Tell them in the store to put 20 off to the side. I will be calling around. Never mind Jimmy got with me just now!
