paint a kingfisher in watercolour part 3

3rd in the series Paint a Kingfisher in Watercolour. There were to be 10 parts to this but I think it will be possible to finish it in 6.
This part deals with the under painting. The Drawing gave it shape, the under painting gives it form. I hope you like it.

Hi David, when doing birds, does one try to do them in a relative 1:1 size if possible? What I guess I really wonder is if they are ever done larger than real life. I know that painting a human larger than life usually does not work well at all Thanks for sharing your process.

Hi. Many people like to paint birds at or around life size but there is no real convention regarding this. If your birds are part of a larger habitat painting then the birds are often painted to a smaller size. If it is more a portrait study then there is more likelihood that the subject will be life size. A subject painted life size, I feel, has more 'presence', and if you can include some life-size habitat as well then the painting can have real impact. Large birds are normally painted smaller, but a life-size painting of an osprey, if done well, can have real dramatic impact. I like to paint life-size when time (and space) allows, but, as I said, there are no rules, go for what you feel is right for you. Thanks for the question ... David

Hi, thanks for the comment and apologies for not replying sooner. I have been using W&N Neutral Tint and W&N Sepia for a similar reason. Both are opaque pigments - hope this helps ... David
