Shanahan’s problem with special teams is the same problem with the rest of his coaching. He is constantly coaching to not lose instead of coaching to win. I don’t believe he was always that way.

Sometimes when some coaches go from O.C. to being responsible for the whole team it changes the way they approach certain situations. Kyle did seem to be more aggressive as an O.C. but he also had guys like Andre Johnson and Julio Jones ( we don't have anything close to those guys) and wasn't responsible for the whole team. Something similar happened to Brian Billick in Baltimore.

2 super-bowl appearances and 4 NFC championship games and yet, it’s Kyle’s fault? Y’all are Madden dorks. 9er fandom and all the new coaches sitting on their sofa’s has become so comical. Absolute dorks.

It appears from this discussion that both Dave + Tim (somehow!) missed Lynch's and Shanahan's response. I didn’t get that KS was “flustered” or “defensive” at all. And no, I don’t think KS “changed his tune” after Lynch did his “stabilizing”. He simply stated the obvious. So obvious that even I, 49er fan since 1961 and Kezar, wrote about it before the presser! In fact, I’m pretty confident, based on their past performance, that neither Shanahan or Lynch were even surprised by the ST questions. That they were prepared. Call it “pre-stabilized”. Breaking: The 49ers have staffers that read media and SM posts. Shanahan and Lynch's response was not, as Tim said, an "admission" that he was "right" (that "as widely noted”…”offhand comments" have claimed "Shanahan doesn't pay attention to special teams"). Or, as Dave put it, has “downplayed” ST. It was an acknowledgement and statement of the obvious - that 49ers ST sucked and that something had to change. “I do think it’s an avenue we can get better in.” KS’s very words. As I listen to Tim I’m seriously trying to figure out what “commitment” and “caring” looks, feels like and means to him. Let’s re-cap what the 49ers have done: Hiring Schneider away from Seattle to replace Hightower; A kicker in the 3rd; a punter in the 4th; making trades and salary cap investments in ST specialists, including returners. As someone who professionally understands organization, culture, structure, delegation, accountability and performance it’s hard to make sense of the responses given actions taken. And is the standard of being a good NFL head coach now really riding on weather or not he personally attends or watches kickers and punters practice or their tryouts or ST practices? Or attend kickoff drills? Oh, wait - aren’t there video records of each and every kick, play (game and practice) from multiple angles? And I know it's cute to cite how Belichick loved talking about long-snapping. Hey, I love long-snappers. Hell, I love holders, and the loss of Mitch was huge and not covered at all. But the reality is that when push comes to shove even Belichick had a phrase that encapsulates his primary focus, one that he used for both players and coaches: "Do your job." Both 49ers coaches and players have not/did not. Hence the changes. And please tell me that I’m not the only one who discerns a sense of humor with KS when answering Q’s about replacement kickers like Wright or punters like Connolly? Tim says he does - “the joking is a part of it…” - but by his answers - “he knows that I know that I’m right…” - I’m not so sure he really does. And I like both Tim and Dave, if that matters. btw, who remembers Mitch calling his own number (!) on a fake punt vs Seattle in 2023? Anybody? Just checking...

I don't think the wide 9 has to be abandoned. It is excellent on passing downs. Play conventional line formations on early downs, then play the wide 9 on passing downs. The defense has to be more adaptable.

Wilkes and sorenson had the 49ers blitzing on 3 downs! That I can remember the defense never blitz much! When they was in the 3-4 defense it was a lot better fit for the personnel that they had. Not many RBs have ran 100+ yards on the Niners defense like they do now. Salahs not coming back as a coordinator unless the offer him something he can’t resist. HC is where the money is

I said the same thing somehow the falcons lost in the Super Bowl is always attributed to Kyle shanahan. The defensive coordinator doesn't get any black for the fact that Tom Brady even came back in that game and the head coach doesn't get any blame at all
@brettwheeler7753
@brettwheeler7753 16 күн бұрын
Yes, the HC Should have overridden KS. Falcons had just completed a pass to Julio to put the Falcons in FG range late. They should have run, or better yet knelt, three times and then kicked the FG that would have sealed the game.
@nightprince8641
@nightprince8641 16 күн бұрын
@brettwheeler7753 but unfortunately he didn't and Kyle isn't to blame for them losing in the Super Bowl. It's a team effort so you can't just sit there and point to Kyle is being the reason why they lost if the falcons defense allow the Patriots to come back in that game in the first place.
@nightprince8641
@nightprince8641 16 күн бұрын
@brettwheeler7753 what would the head coach of overridden him on. I'm just curious because the falcons head coach was a defensive coordinator previously which is the reason why he had Kyle in the first place because he doesn't have a mind for offense

@@brettwheeler7753Dan Quinn also called the same cover 3 look that let a RB (James White) set a SB record for receptions. No adjustments. A total team effort is required for a collapse of that magnitude.

I still think, what’s the purpose of a ST coach if I hv to watch them kick??? A HC has better things to do. So for Kyle, ok you want a real good kicker? Let’s get a really good kicker, During the 3rd round and another 4th round Punter. Weird that if he has a say so you people will say he’s has issue with trust and he micro manages. a director doesn’t need to do a job of a manager. If other HC is very very involved good for them. But it doesn’t make Kyle a bad coach or makes him the reason for the ST messing up because that’s a combination of being good at the job, discipline and players being TOO comfortable.

Sorensen my be a nice guy, but that doesn’t make him an effective coach. Let him be the “Ball Father” if we have to. But someone better recognize that he doesn’t have the juice to lead any player component of our team. A real Special Teams coach is what we need. That everyone who has seen our performance can see this and management appears reluctant to accept is baffling.

Mike Tomlin for the Steelers haven't won a playoff game in 10 years and have been one and done for the past 6 seasons, only being a mediocre team that barely makes the playoffs year in and year out. I don't see the media heads on his strap to fire him, yet Kyle gets all this heat? It's not right. Same thing with a coach Marvin Lewis for the Bengals who didnt make a playoff games in 8 straight years, and had several losing seasons, yet he was a coach for the Bengals for 10 years. Why do some of these guys get the huge benefit of doubt?

ATL OC - K.Shanahan was given all the publicity for resurrecting QB M.Ryan and labeled an "Offensive Genius" going into the 2016 Superbowl. They were up 28-3 over the Patriots late in the 3rd quarter. All Shanahan needed to do was kick a FG and the game wouldn't have made it to O/T. I was rooting for the Falcons (M. Ryan and K.Shanahan) because I was anti-Patriots. They failed to make it across midfield in the second half of that Superbowl after they scored early in the 3rd quarter TD. The pattern continued with the 49ers - The 49ers grab a first half lead, and the offense stalls in the second half. Shanahan loves the "Wide Nine" (Rush 4 and drop 7) which is basically a zone defense or hybrid zone (man-to-man on WRs and zone on everyone else). Shanahan doesn't make the halftime adjustments on offense or defense, but the opposing coaches make the necessary adjustments to win the second half. That's why he gets the BLAME! Ironically, one of the few "come from behind wins" by the 49ers in the Shanahan Era was led by Jimmy G who pulled a rabbit out of the hat to win the second game against the Rams and propelled them to the 2021 NFC Championship Game in which they eventually lost to the LA Rams on the 3rd matchup. NOT INSANITY to blame Shanahan. Dan Quinn didn't sniff the playoffs until Shanahan was OC of ATL. They were 2-0 against the Rams in the regular season, but in the game against the Rams that counted the most (NFC Championship) - He FAILED! Shanahan = Bud Grant, Dan Reeves, and/or Marv Levy. I hope I'm wrong because I would like to see the 49ers win their sixth Superbowl. By the way, I'm not anti-Shanahan. Had he won any of the two Superbowls (2019 or 2023), I would have a different opinion of him.

Offensive tackle would be good for the right fit, but they do have the same problem on the D-line, where they have a bunch of misfit toys Kocurek tries to mold, but the elite talents are tricky because they go early and we have been picking late. So I'd love a first round OT, but I am fine with them passing on one if they finally get Bosa's bookend, or if they can get a dominant DT who holds his gap and creates problems in the middle. If they pick none of those 3 and don't move back they'd better get a superstar or ill be pretty pissed. The talent void is so glaring now.
