Been doing photography for many years and my philosophy was, I never ever want to have to edit my pictures after so I got good at adjusting the camera on the fly to get the best pic I could get given the lighting condition. And I can't say I'm unhappy with my results, however, you may have convinced me to give raw a go. Since this was the best explanation I've heard and also a very good demonstration. Thank you for that!

I consider myself a novice, but one thing I learned early on with my old Canon XSi was to always shoot RAW. I remember thinking how soft and bad everything looked when I first started using it until I realized that I had to do all that myself, but the end result was far better. Now I just need to get into actually editing photos.

Raw gives you much more color adjustment freedom. Thank you for this new tip! This is the first time I've understood raw vs jpeg. Thank you. So how do I change camera settings to default to raw? First, how do I make sure I'm shooting raw?

I think the absolute white balance value is the best thing about RAW for me. Makes it much easier to homogenise white balance over a series of photos (say an event). I know some cameras have a white balance lock but mine doesn’t
@ian22222
@ian22222 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! This was a great explanation and I loved seeing the example with the white balance. I think it’s definitely worth shooting in RAW for all that adjustability because in the past, I have had those massively blown out photos that I wished I could recover.

This was really helpful, David! You do such a terrific job of breaking concepts down in a way that's easy to understand. Quick question: If you shoot in RAW and then go back to the computer to edit the image to be what you like, do you recommend then saving the image as a jpeg + deleting the RAW file in order to save space?
@kristof007
@kristof007 2 жыл бұрын
If space is an issue, you could do this. Ideally, space is not an issue and you can keep your RAW file and then have a finished JPEG.

Jpeg is lika buying frozen fast food, and warming it up a little. No taste, just food. - Raw is like buying a nice part of meet. You fry it, U spices it and you controls the heat so it want get burned. And you get a nice taste. So with Raw you get more control, of the final result . (Juste a small comparison.)

Tis crazy that I used to store all my Raw files on Dvd roms back in the day. I still go back and edit them though, with new ideas etc. I only shoot RAW. Having settings saved in Lightroom is great for quick edits.... I liked this video, I enjoy nodding along to your opinions. You could do a video (if able) on an old DSLR vs newer ones... maybe.. best of luck

This gave me more information in an easy to understand way than a year and a half of film school. (All we learned of RAW was that it let you punch in without degrading the image as badly and that you should only use it sparingly because it used so much space). If you ever wanted to do a video of alternate color grading software that doesn't need a subscription that would be really cool. :)

Thank you for this. I knew that there was a benfeit in shooting raw but I didn't exactly know why. I"m not a photographer I just like taking pictures. I just got back from a bucket list trip to Alaska and happened to catch the Northern Lights. I got some AMAZING pictures. However, I forgot that I had circular polorizer filter on my lens so I think the pictures aren't as bright as they could be. Thankfully...I shoot all of my Alakan trip picture in jpg + raw. The only image editing I've down is a crop and maybe a little brighten of jgp that's about it. However, I"m going to get Lightroom and edit once in a life time Northern Light and Glacier pictures so that I can have them printed and hang them in my office. Thank you for this!

I read stuff on conflicting sides. I generally want to get it right out of camera because I am trying to learn how to do get my camera to do what I want it to do. I just started doing Raw + JPG, I plan on just keeping the raw files on an external hard drive and then the JPGs in my Apple Photos. If I ever need a raw file, there it is, but I don't have to load up my personal life photos with huge files.
