Again guys, sorry for the late review on this one, I thought one was coming from DJI, but I ended up buying one. And considering it was so many monies, maybe throw a like up there for me🤣👍Overall though, what are your thoughts on this thing? Yay or nay? Or just for specific use cases?

Its a nope from me which is a shame, no replaceable lense, i am not doing that again after the gopro max. The battery situation is a no go as well, way to pricey. such a shame i wanted dji just to come and compete with gopro. I reckon this camera is going to be the FPV drone pilots camera of choice though. Great vid 👍

Big nay from me. Feels like this was thrown at us as an expensive beta test, which is insulting lol. No sd card on the actual camera, low internal memory, dual screen addition isn't even water proof. Also, once you've drained your power module you're screwed lol you can't swap out batteries for the day 😅

Great honest review. I found that Amazon Prime is not accepting returns for this unless it is damaged. “This item is non-returnable, but if the item arrives damaged or defective, you may request a refund or replacement.” Which was the final reason for me to keep using my Osmo Action. The memory, vulnerability of the screens, the battery situation and the price, which you discussed, all stopped me from giving this a try. I ordered the 64gb 360 Go2 instead. Thank you!

After watching several videos about the DJIA2, I'm glad I've waited for yours! It's clear for me now... it's a design disaster, lots of limitations. In the context of my usage, it will not be suitable. Of course this is my personal opinion, others may tolerate the downsides and limitations according to their preference. Thank you for helping me to prevent myself making a costly purchase. Excellent videos always! Keep it up!

It's a super clever camera, but as a power user, it falls short for my use case. For sure there's someone out there that this camera is perfect for. I think it's just not me👍

After looking at several review videos about the action 2, I am more convinced to go with the GoPro 10! Everything is integrated into the GP10 and it offers better battery life, choice of bigger SD card and more shooting options.

I just commented on that. I was gonna wait for the release of the action 2 instead of buying the GoPro 10 but went ahead and bought GP10 a couple months ago and so glad I did. 399 w/ their promo thien so actually cheaper plus vastly superior. I havent had any issues with the over heating (maybe 1x) but not a big deal. Plus, they just released firmware to address that (havent seen reviews though). I;'d defintely go for it. Buy an aftermarket 128gb SD and you can shoot forever.

Sike.. That gopro will get you 15 mins at 4k 60fps.. Enjoy the overheating. I took mine back. Garbo product for vlogging.

You brought up some great points that made me think twice about forking over 500+ for the A2. Each one of those point (not waterproof with added modules, lack of removable lense, no external batteries like A1, no SD on main module, no quick switch) are the main points I thought of when they released it, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a deal breaker. Too many features were removed to make this an "upgrade" and evolution from the first action. We have to literally dig to find reasons to justify buying this over the action 1. And the 500 + to get a front screen when the action 1 included it with paying extra. To be brutally honest, they dropped the ball big time, and I already had plans to buy it at launch. It's a nice camera, don't get me wrong, but I think this is NOT an action "2". Maybe maybe a dji "session" 1? Totally bummed after waiting so long. 😔

My suggested name for this should have been Osmo Action Mini or Osmo Mini Sports but you are correct that it is not a version 2 of the original. A part from all the other issues my biggest gripe is what you do when the internal battery dies? Will DJI offer a premium price to replace the battery or will you have to buy a new main unit? Regardless of the answer this is why I won’t buy one. This is what also separates the A2 from being a action camera, which btw you can still get replacement batteries for the 1st Hero.

I'm totally with you! I wish this was the Action MINI and then they released an Action PRO that was the same build quality and style, but a single unit with replaceable batteries. A true successor to the Osmo Action that would compete with GoPro. This feels like they let down the power user.

Definitely appreciate your honest review of this. I have seen a few reviews of this camera, but nobody seemed to be bothered by the 5 points you brought up, and definitely didn't mention charging the main camera unit. Definitely a bit of a weird camera idea.

Glad to see someone actually point out the flaws and emphasize it. I am a hard pass on this. I look at like this, gopro puts out a unit yearly and always seems to miss the mark until the 10. Never have own a gorpro but looking like I might have to. DJI had a couple years and just missed the mark completely. This should have been a new release of some other type of camera. All we needed was a action two with a bigger sensor, horizon leveling, 4k 240 or at least 2.7K 240 and all the other great features of the action one.

I know this video is old, but in 2024 I think I've made a decision clear enough thru this video what I'll be missing out and what I'll gain. Still decided to go for it cos will do alot of pov shots to place the camera unit in between my eyes since it's so compact and light, I've used this method with insta 360 and action 1, it was just too bulky and heavy but bums me out cos action 2 only gives us 70mins or less with RS, can't even connect a cable to the unit while filming without the 2nd module then it will beat the purpose of having a small camera between my eyes.

I bought one for £140 as new and is just awesome. Have the water plastic cage so if it rains I used it in , if not I have a smaling metal cage. Bought an extra power mode,it lasts me for a cycle ride of 3h easy. Great in holiday. The camera lens I have put on it a tempered glass protector and is fine . Great camera 💪🤘🏻👌😊

I won't buy this, all the negatives you said are important, but most of all, the unprotected lens. In any accident, the camera is destroyed. You are my favourite guy for these camera reviews, I am waiting for comparison between osmo action 2 / gopro 10 / insta360 Go 2. I have the Go 2 and I have to say I am very happy with it, has features that the rest don't have.

Just got one earlier today. Won't be using it for a few more days though, until I'm done with exams I had to choose between this or the GO 2 (to get FPV without looking like an idiot), and audio and Storage were primary for me. Action supports external memory and has 4 microphones as an option in the dual screen combo, so I picked one up (and DJI is releasing a wireless microphone in January, which should support this and my DSLR). Totally woulda went for the 360 64GB Version tho tbh, if it weren't for the audio issue.

Those are the two I'm most excited to review against each other! For FPV, obviously the GO2 has the size/weight advantage. But I didn't realize that audio was a deal breaker for FPV. You keep a lot of the prop/motor audio in your videos?

With the 4 mics you hear the sound of the water and that takes away from the vocals. I like that it's so small and still puts out good video. Perfect for POV if you wanted to actually place the camera inside of a small RC car.

Reason I got this instead of the GO 2, is because GO 2 only has one microphone, and audio just didn't sound good enough for me tbh. This one has 4 (on Dual Screen Combo though), and when the DJI Wireless Mic comes out in January, it's gonna support it, so there's that as well

For an "action cam" without an easily removable lens/lens cover, that's a dealbreaker. These types of cameras go through the most abuse, so it would suck to have to baby it when you're snowboarding or ATVing. These things will fall off! Plus, I'm clumsy... 😅

So a bit of hope on this front is that a few people have mentioned that multiple brands are working on magnetic lens covers. Of course the issue there will be with lens flares and it possibly getting knocked off, but at least that's so hope!

This is a high-quality constructed small camera that is fragile as anything I’ve seen in an action camera. It’s fun to hold it has a great screen but man it feels like an expensive iPhone if you dropped it it’s scratched and done

No one seems to have mentioned the increasingly emerging reviews that SCREAM about the overheating and shutting down at 4 to 5 minutes, when filming at 4k!

3-5 minutes before overheating in 4k120 seems to be the reality. Honestly, while that sucks big time compared to the Hero 10 (with stock firmware), its not the end of the world. You should never need more than 1-2 minute clips of 4k120 in any real world usage. The real dealbreaker is how short it runs in 4k24/4k30. Mostly are claiming 18-20 minutes. Terrible, terrible product.

@@KungPowEnterFist True. Good point. But I do not agree to the 1-2 minute clips point. Most footage before editing is much more than that in my humble opinion, frankly. I position Gopro cameras at the Target position on my "range", it takes me at least a minute to get back on foot to firing position - then before I prepare and fire, correct and fire, several times... At least 10 minutes have gone by on a good day. Well for me, I do not need 4k. I am very happy with 1080p, and so I just bought the older Gopro 8 to add to my two Hero 4 Sessions. I also have a Garmin Action Cam too. All these serve me well enough.

I got mine last Friday. It's basically the evolution from the GoPro sessions ... a market, that GoPro abandoned. And yes, it's use case differs a lot from people that would have bought the Action 1. Also, there's already specs out there for cases, that will have the USB-C port in them even without a battery module attached. So this will be interesting to see, where this is going. The only thing .. as everybody else and yourself ... is: why oh why did DJI not make the lense replaceble !!!

It’s a relief DJI finally released a magnetic protective case for the Action 2. I’ll stop worrying about scratching the screen and it’s suppose to have heat control solution so we can film more. Can’t wait to test it out.

You make great points about the battery swapping. The only reason I would consider getting one of these is the size, it would be nice to have a smaller helmet cam for my motorcycle. But that 22GB of usable storage and limited record time on the base unit is just a giant pain. I would have to dump the memory and recharge it at every stop.

I ride too and the size of this camera is also why I was interested in it. The battery and non expandable memory is was kills it for me. I was using a Hero Session for a while which I thought was the perfect size to mount on a helmet but the damn thing decided to just stop working and I haven't found a good alternative since.

I can't even come up with a scenario I choose this over the DJI 1st Gen in what I use a camera for. Dam I guess I am sticking with my Sony cams for a while longer.

As somebody looking to upgrade from a Hero 4 before my honeymoon in the Bahamas, really sort of torn here. Needing to have the additional battery for the SD slot and any sort of substantial storage, thus then needing to have a water proof housing also, which now impacts the audio, it seems like this is not even the best option. Honestly makes me consider either the first action or the Hero 10...

@@rjsvids, way better than the GP? Compared to which GP? And what is better than the GP10? For sure definitely not on price, overheating, swappable battery and memory, more fragile without spending more money on adding warranty coverage or waiting on other 3rd party cages or magnetic covers? Seems for your use case, form factor, wider FOV if not using other modes, magnetic design, weight? Seems like mostly style points form over function. Am definitely not a brand worshipper but as a consumer, you got to compete in performance and value and if these manufacturers are not competitive, you gotta call a spade a spade. I have both GP and DJI products and criticized the GP8 for that reason and returned it to eventually get the GP9/10 but definitely not dismissive of that weakness. Besides GP8 was released what 2yrs ago and if anything, DJI should have learned from that mistake, not repeat it and then expect consumers to be forgiving just because we love the brand. I’m on the fence with the A2, maybe wait for more 3rd party accessories like the GO2 recent power module. On a good note though if you need external audio, A2 accepts digital connect. Meaning use say a Rode GO2 (GO1 does not), just connect a USBC to the A2 USBC port and the USBC from GO2 receiver and you’re good to go without a 3.5mm audio jack. DJI did well with the P2 and should make that into a waterproof A2

Keeping my OA1. I mean it is nice and compact... but the batteries being soo easy to swap out with my OA1, quick switch settings. The list goes on of things the OA2 can't do its older brother can. For those reasons I will stick with my OA1. Thanks for the video. Great work.

Regarding the non-replaceable front screen, bummer but there should be screen protectors on the market that can protect it. The batteries and memory limitations are the bigger issues IMHO. And that price. I just got a GPH10 so I’m not really in the market for this but, even if I hadn’t, those issues I mentioned would definitely be deal breakers for me.

They have a magnetic macro lens that snaps onto the front of the camera so I'm really hoping they come out with a magnetic lens cover or polarized lens. That way you have something to protect the lens. I'm also really concerned with the modules not being waterproof because my wife wants to use it for horseback riding and would need the extra battery life. Unless it was a typo, you are also the first video I've seen that show horizon steady works in 4k 24fps. Every other video said it has to be in 2.7k or less. I look forward to the comparison to the insta 360 go2.

Hi David, Bummer that you have a big channel but DJI omitted you. Must have filtered those YT who will be honest and expose weaknesses to be omitted from the free list. Anyhow, thanks for highlighting those good points. Always appreciate objectivity and calling out what needs to be called out. Worst is dishonesty, disingenuousness, and/or hyped up reviews just for free products, which there are lots out there. Understand everyone has to make a living but don’t expect viewers to not see through it and/or be forgiving if you compromise your integrity. Anyhow, I’m on the fence already owning the P2, GP10, and GO2 (32GB instead or new 64GB as I just got it a month ago not knowing a bigger memory option was on its way). So the cool magnetic design is just a form over function and haven’t seen enough IQ to sway over to buy it. The price and other cons don’t turn me off but rather not wanting to add redundancy in terms of IQ. May I suggest to do a buyer’s guide for action cams and break it up as follows: 1) new user (never bought or own any action cams); 2) mixed users (have multiple brands, DJI, GP, Insta); 3) upgrading (either from same brand or another brand) Keep up the good and free honest content!

I own & use both the Osmo Action 1 & GoPro 7 - both great cameras. I see it as a step backwards to replace my current cameras with the Action 2. The Action 2 is definitely not a step forwards in my opinion! Great video.

I got one and am still deciding whether I will keep it. I love just carrying around the main module and using it to grab quick photos and videos. If you shut off the beeping it makes an interesting street photography camera. Aim with your hand, not your eye. Haven’t used it hard enough to get the overheating issue, but it does get warm. I do notice that I have to lock the screen all the time or I wind up somehow pushing the digital zoom to 4.00

Good review. Honestly I just wanted v2 to have longer battery life (I film my bike races which are usually about 2-2.5 hours long), and the ability to have HDR and Steady Shot on at the same time. I'll probably just pick up another action can 1 because I need a second. If the small form factor had an SD card slot and a USB charging port, I would still consider it

The A2 is more waterproof than the Osmo Action: no ports/doors/lens covers whose seals can fail. if you use the battery pack in the rain you can also cover the SD and USB ports with electrical or gaffer tape. That should work. I preordered the A2, but I may cancel. Mountmedia channel did a great overview and the battery life is really disappointing of the camera unit alone that I wanted to use for snorkeling/spearfishing. May wait and see. Probably there are going to be silicone sleeves and sticky lens protective glass

I think that when you weigh those against the CONs, it just becomes really difficult to see the use case for this camera as my primary action camera

@@DavidManningvlog I think I am canceling the preorder. I would like to see if shooting at 2.7K 60fps has longer battery life than 4K. The short battery life of the camera module is an issue. I may wait to see what firmware updates bring. Maybe wait for a eventual price drop. The form factor is great, so is the sealing. I don't need the front screen at all.

Just a little detail. Scroll down the webpage for the DJI Osmo Action 2. Go to where they discuss the "Macro Lense". The caption on the photo in that section still says "Marco Lense" instead of "Macro Lense". Just checked and they still haven't fixed that. Gotta love that quality control...or lack of it. Some of these points you've mentioned, I certainly wouldn't purchase one. And to be honest, I expected them to actually close the gap they have on GoPro in general...but they actually headed in the opposite direction.

It’s an action cam that you can’t use it as an action cam because it’s too fragile out of the box. DJI or someone has to come up with an accessory to make it a bit more rugged so we won’t worry about breaking it. Lol! Also, good job helping the guy out!

If this camera was say USD 100 less than it is priced, I think it would be in a nice position in terms of value / quality. It's the pricing that made us wanna compare it with GoPro Hero 10. IF you have a specific reason to use the DJI action 2 and you know it's limitation and pros, yeah sure go for it, like utilizing it's modular design (only those who can utilise the pros of it)..... But if you just want an action cam and do not need to think much about and just use, I say go for the Gopro.

I like the cube shape but for me it needs replaceable batteries and a SD card slot. I use mine for MTB and no chance it would last on a ride (Battery or memory). Form factor is great though. DJI just needs to make it bigger to hold both those items.

I take my action camera backpacking, biking and kayaking with me. Needing battery life while out for a couple of days is a big deal for me. I was excited for this to come out but am glad that I didn't buy it. Nice job on the quick review. I have saw other videos and none of them compared to yours. You do a good job at pointing out the "duh" features that somehow got overlooked or left out that we all loved and some that we need.

I ordered the Pocket 2 the day the Action2 was announced, very underwhelmed. I see it as completely new product line, not really an upgrade to my OA, because exactly everything you listed… and the omission of the Quick Switch button, enormous fail.

The dji action 2 is more like a GoPro session 5 but used more for like fpv drones 1 complaint I would say is that the cameras rear screen is fragile I went through 2 cameras already but other than that I love the camera it’s great fpv

Very comprehensive review David, thanks. You highlight some important issues that I wasn't aware of. The open ports will be vulnerable to rain/dust on a bike. The battery module would be essential for longer rides. I'm afraid I will be tipped towards the GoPro 10. No doubt DJI will address these with their Mk2 or Action3. Shame they didn't consult you before they launched it. They would have had a winner!

1) there will be screen protection magnetic covers coming, already seen on 3rd party sites. 2) water proof housing 3) mod to charge camera, they only sell it with a mod you cannot buy the camera separate 4) it locks and don’t see any issues 5) battery price at £50 is ok 👍 What you should be testing is connecting a 3.5mm lav mic or the fact that the sound is not sync properly to the video when using external mics. The auto exposure is over exposed. I’m sure DJI will sort all issues in a few months via firmware updates as they did on the Osmo action

Same reason why I sold my Insta 360 one r 360 mod and why I am not buying the Insta 360 one x2 they don't give us an option to replace the lenses if it gets broken. I admire go pro for returning the replaceable lenses.

Does the battery pack work almost like a battery pack? Like if the camera dies will attaching the two together charge the camera without being plugged in. Then unplug the two and continue to use just the camera

I am surprised you didn’t touch on the overheating issue, in my usage , the action 2 camera overheated and shutdown recording in 3 mins for 4k 60fps, in outdoor use, the camera gets extremely hot.. it’s not worth $519 . I hope people return the camera before the return period ends and don’t get stuck with it…Can’t believe this camera passed dji quality testing..

The only thing that I "like"...... the wider field of view is cool...and I could see that feature being helpful .... but for my uses ... it would be very seldom! I guess the smaller size of just the camera module is also cool... but their old one isn't very large to begin with. Yeah, I'll stick with the old Osmo Action, thank you very much!

I was ready to purchase this even knowing that the screen wasn't user replaceable, which really sucks, but after seeing some of the other cons I definitely won't even consider this now. It's a shame because it looks like it does a great job recording audio and video and stabilizing the image. I don't know who thought this up but it seems like they made a great product and then just handicapped the hell out of it.

I just bought one with the power mod. I'm not a power user. the use of this cam suits me and this was one of the few cameras which was within my budget.. but one camera I missed out was the insta360 ONE RS 4k edition which was in similar price.. I've only noticed it after I got this camera😌. so far I'm loving this camera and the small form factor is an advantage over the one RS 4K edition. but non removable lens and battery is still a slight issue for me. 🥲🥲 this is my 1st action cam purchase. And I'm planning to go with it for a long time.. I hope at least 3rd party manufacturers will make a waterproof power mod in the future. so at least the battery issues due to ageing will solve to a certain extent.

Battery life is expectedly short for such a small device. Inability to charge directly through USD or replace the battery like in GoPro is a drawback. Single microphone in windy conditions is a bit handicapped. Four microphones experience is much better. Did you try to use DJI mic with Action 2 to compare the sound in windy conditions?

all correct but for some strange reason my GoPro 10 getting dust on the shelf...so convenient to attach action 2 to anything, the size factor, and a much quicker time to process video on mobile on the go...for me DJI action 2 all the way

I'd return it and just buy an OA1 and a set of freewell nds. They went from having the BEST design on the market to the worst. I have a hiking vlog. I'd never even consider downgrading to the OA2 from the oa1.
