Zimerman is just the GOAT imo. His rubatos are absolutely perfect for my taste. Every goddamn time. The way the music is expressed through SILENCE... how does he do that?! I have never been so on edge when listening to a piano piece during RESTS... my heart rate just increases and my pupils dilate in utter suspense. The way this man communicates these moments are impeccable. Piano playing is one of the most difficult art forms ever but this guy is in a true state of mastery with this art. So much admiration. I want to play like him some day at least ONE time in my life.
@davidofpiano4237 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, yeah. You nailed it. The man understands absolutely everything there is to know about music making on the piano. His use of silence, the way he contours his notes from attack to decay, the narrative quality of his phrasing, the way he layers accompaniment under the melody and brings out inner voices... everything is thought out and executed with such imagination and technical perfection. And yeah his rubatos are unreal. Then of course there's his technique, which is kinda scary, really. How can anyone achieve such complex movements with perfect efficiency and musicality every fucking time? I don't know! I know that being a master piano technician (not just actual piano technique, but the inner workings of the instrument itself) doesn't hurt. There will never be another like him. I just wish he recorded and performed more. P.S. I agree about wanting to sound like him at least once, there are moments (like maybe a measure here and there) where I feel like I DISTANTLY sound Zimerman-esque, but it's probably just wishful thinking.

For me, Zimerman is the Master of Silence. 9:42 - 15 seconds without any sound(!) and it makes perfect sense. His interpretations are ideal for today life, they force us to slow down and think "Hey, let's wait here and dive more deeply into this emotional piece of music. Let's synchronize our imagination with it, let's throw away all our daily matters and fly away for a moment". Lately, I was on Zimerman's concert and there were moments, when hundrets of people were holding their breath just to not disturb this perfect silence. I think I understand what you mean. He does play from the heart. However, Zimmerman is also the epitome of a musician who understands and is able to play with great clarity of form. Form is structural (melodic,harmonic, phrasing). Dynamics, timbre, voicing, rubato, pauses, (often) spring from this to create the whole. His synthesist allowed him to present, to you, a most valid interpretation of a great work. He is one of the most highly intelligent musicians I have ever heard.

My grandmother taught piano, so I had free lessons for years. No talent, but the first Pathetique movement was my final recital piece at her annual recital in 10th grade. I’ve picked up piano as a late-30s adult & muscle memory is so helpful! My vision is awful & was part of why I quit ages ago (I kept losing my place w/the sheet music.) I made many errors at that last recital, age 16 & felt guilty as her relative. Now, I practice via 80-something-key-keyboard WITH HEADPHONES to spare others & embarrass myself less. So affordable plus no tuning! And those headphones, among other things. With my gramma passed, I love reviving the Pathetique 1st movement with a solid foundation & muscle memory. I love the 2nd mvt, but the first & more dramatic/challenging is way easier for me! ❤ it

Zimerman is a perfect perfectionist (ahah!). If he repeated the exposition from the Grave there must a good and valid reason. Maybe he found out that's actually the/one way Beethoven wanted it to be played. It doesn't sound bad anyway, and if you think about it the grave section is the heart of the first movement, the center from which every theme is generated and to which it comes back. So it does make a LOT of sense

I'm thrilled to have found this. This rendition just cannot be compared to Horowitz's or Barenboim's performances of this very piece. The ending of the adagio brought me down to tears. His respect to pauses, to what's actually written is remarkable. I'm starting to learn this by myself and this is a very desirable benchmark

Bravo to a brilliant piano player! But the true mastermind to write the work of genius, Beethoven! Long live one of, if not the greatest composers of all time!

Don't like to make comparisons because there are so many pianists who play this sonata beautifully. However, I really enjoyed listening to this performance. Zimmerman brings out the spirit of Beethoven in this sonata with its powerful emotions in the 1st movement and the contrasting more tender emotions in the second Movement. Zimmerman plays many composers excellent. I have not heard him play baroque repertoire.
