This is so fascinating. Beautiful clean scents that are my favorites usually contain Vanilla, bergamot, vanilla musk, salt, cocoa. I have gotten tired of a fragrance and had to change it up. But as I got older I gravitated toward more subtle fresh scents. There are so many more now of clean fresh scents on the market now. I love love scented candles also but they have to have non toxic wicks and wax. I adore Pumpkin Scented candles for some reason. Not just a generic pumpkin it has to be high end. I’ve tested that out also.

If you have pets, you need to be mindful and take into consideration when it comes to using scented anything around them. Some companies even have a warning label in their product description about using it around pets. A dogs sense of smell for example, is up to 100,000 better than a human, therefore many scents being too overpowering for them.
@mopnola2 ай бұрын
That could be through the use of fragrance which often times is a chemical facsimile.

@@mopnola Both people and pets can be allergic to certain scents as well - with or without chemicals.
@mopnola2 ай бұрын
@yourconnection9303 Highly unusual to be allergic to an essential oil. When ingredients say fragrance, it is synthetic. I'm allergic to many fragrances but not one essential oil. Lavender fragrance makes me dizzy etc, the essential oil no. The perceived allergy to a fragrance is usually a chemical sensitivity or allergy to the fake fragrance. I shop for products made in the EU as their FDA doesn't allow many of the chemicals the USA allows. Pathetic really.

@@mopnolaIf a person has asthma or prone to environmental allergies, essential oils can cause an allergic reaction. They can also pose health risks to pregnant women, children, and pets.

All synthetic scents give me migraine almost instantly but many natural scents help my brain tremendously. I have strong family history of AD and regular, frequent migraines that are getting less and less bearable as I approach menopause. I'm looking forward to watching this interview and learn what kind of scents were used in the study. Edit: amazing information! Thank you ❤

I have used scent therapy my whole life starting as a teenager. However I’ve never like heavy strong perfumes. I absolutely love beach scents, clean laundry, vanilla and fresh light musk sometimes. All I know I’ve dealt with CPTSD from traumatic events in childhood. Obviously depression comes with this. I’ve noticed certain scents actually lifted my spirits and a slight relaxed pleasant feeling came over me. Scent is just a small part of my overall betterment of mood. I only use clean fragrances. I don’t respond well to heavy complicated fragrances. In fact I’m repelled immediately so I am sensitive to perfumes. Most I do not like at all.

I saw an article on an in vitro study that identified a potential endocrine disruptor that is used in perfume and personal care products called musk ambrette, a synthetic musk. I wanted to know if inhalation of an odorant could cause endocrine disruption so I searched the literature and found this study: 'Association of Early Pubertal Onset in Female Rats With Inhalation of Lavender Oil'. Both lavender oil and musk ambrette seem to cause endocrine disruption through activation of the HPG axis. IT's worth noting that even if something is derived from a natural source such as a plant, it may be harmful at some dosages or in certain contexts.

Ty so much for addressing the olfactory system. I’ve always been curious about this bc I’ve always wondered why certain fragrances I just love give me a sense of well being and many other fragrances repel me. I had to by trial and error research many many fragrances.

I would like to know if olfactory enrichment increases carbonic anhydrase activity. I found this study to be incredibly interesting - and wonder why there hasn't been much attention to it: 'Carbonic anhydrase I, II, and VI, blood plasma, erythrocyte and saliva zinc and copper increase after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.' Quote from the paper's abstract: "rTMS induced biochemical changes in specific enzymatic activities, trace metal concentrations, and induction of novel salivary proteins, with sensory improvement in patients with taste and smell dysfunction."

No wonder I went nuts during the covid years and turned into a perfume collector! I was always chasing a new scent at each turn. It proved to be a wonderful olfactory therapy during the isolating quarantine periods, but a very expensive one. Since then especially, perfume is a daily routine and ritual and perfuming the home environment too is part of my mental health kit. Thank you for this wonderful podcast.

In Dec ‘22 at 48 yo I was healthy strong ate well balanced diet walked 4 to 8 miles a day, stricken with a sudden smell loss (non Covid related). Three months later it started to return but with dysfunction nothing smelled right and now my taste was affected. Within 5 months I lost 60 pounds. I have not had animal protein since, my taste for food has shrunk. Internist essentially high fived me for losing extra weight and sent me to Otolaryngologist(I already see for spasmodic dysphonia) He being concerned tells me it’s neurological (worries in notes Parkinson’s) sends me to neurologist, local dr seems to dismiss Parkinson’s yet I “fail” some evaluation and have a plethora of non motor issues. He cares less about smell/taste dysfunction - “are you consuming less calories?” of course I am everything smells/tastes terribly. So he says “well that’s why you’re losing weight”. I’m in Southern California desperate for answers now nearly 2 years later. Still seeking help.

Consider using Super Patches. This may not seem credible but worth a try. They are neuro codes on a transdermal patch. Combining more than one may be necessary. They promote homeostasis in a very unique and potentially profound way. The best to you.

@@karenfarrell6158 Thank you for reply. I have a new neurologist and two otolaryngologist at USC. I will see my new otolaryngologist next month for another evaluation regarding smell/taste. I will look into these patches. I’ve lost hope that any sense of normalcy will return and I can actually identify horrible smells as my brain has reinterpreted, like coffee, bacon, certain fresh produce/herbs, or even second hand smoke list goes on.
