Traumatic events affect all of us. And this includes not only the traumas we have directly experienced, but also our personal responses to the traumas of others around us and even the traumatic events affecting those that we do not personally know. What affects one affects all.
Trauma in our lives has lasting effects both in terms of our mental and physical wellbeing. Trauma, and its running partner, shame, affect our metabolism, our immune function, and even our gene expression. Further, trauma accelerates multiple markers of aging.
On the podcast today, I have the opportunity to spend time with Paul Conti, MD, author of the new book, Trauma, the Invisible Epidemic, with a foreword by Lady Gaga. It’s a powerful look behind the curtain at the role of trauma in our lives, and fortunately, it provides helpful tools, for all of us, to deal with its lingering effects. The book explores trauma both through the lens of Dr. Conti as a professional as well as what has transpired in his own life that led him to explore the importance of this issue.
I am certain this program will offer benefit and hope to many.

This is so true. Trauma has helped “ruin” my life. I’m not an addict- but most of my family is. I have always said that trauma is the rood of dysfunction. I’m what society would consider a “looser.” At 47 I completed a program to get a job in a field that I like- only to be treated like dirt by the younger more accomplished staff. As Americans-we no longer hold space for people who have had a harder start in life. Our society only values those who are young and focused. If you are over 40 and don’t have a degree, you might as well move to tent city. Trauma holds you hostage in a negative mindset- it’s hard to be positive. It’s a full-time job. I’m not a bully, but I seem to attract them. Love this video❤️👍

The generational aspects of this are incredible. The sins of the fathers are visited upon the sons even unto the fifth generation. Trying to even imagine the traumas five generations back is overwhelming; the depression and the second world war in the generation before me anf the first world wa in the generation before them, etc, etc

It can be enlightening to research your family tree and view the details of your ancestors. Newspaper articles reporting violent escapades of your ancestors five generations back. And having current day relatives who are violent malignant narcissists.

Excellent conversation so helpful to navigate the murky some times violent waters of trauma. Teachers should get training to recognize trauma schools should be equipped with resources to help the child that chronic visits to the Principal's office and finally gets expelled sending him to the source of his personal Hell😔

What an important topic. I find the concept of getting out of the head and into the gut is helpful. Look for the feeling and try EFT and look for the felt shift.

There are ways to integrate trauma and not have the ptsd responses - look in neuro emotional technique. It has been phenomenal for me and many others.

Love ya Dr. Perlmutter! Great interview! May God lead you to full healing. Please check out The Wounded Heart by Dan Allender. It’s a great read, even if your trauma didn’t involve CSA. Explores how trauma guides interpersonal patterns, and how to change self-protective habits to live and live boldly. Love you! 🙏❤️‍🩹

By our estimations, "Right" was pronounced by this guy about 15 845 times in this video. I stopped around the 3000 mark with brain trauma.
