Loneliness is pervasive in our modern world. The sense of isolation and lack of connection, clearly made worse by the COVID pandemic, is associated with a wide scope of health issues and even mortality. So what do we do?
Some important steps are presented in our podcast, an interview with the author of Project Unlonely - Healing Our Crisis of Disconnection, Dr. Jeremy Nobel.
Jeremy Nobel, M.D., MPH, is a primary-care physician, public health practitioner, and award-winning poet with faculty appointments at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Medical School. He is the founder and president of the Foundation for Art & Healing (www.ArtandHealing.org), whose signature initiative, Project UnLonely, addressing the personal and public health challenges of loneliness and social isolation, has gained national visibility.
This is an important topic, not just for the elderly, living alone, but for all of us. For it is clear that any of us can feel lonely and disconnected, even in the midst of our busy lives.

😊As a psychotherapist/ nutritionist/health counselor of 53 years, I love this all-needed dialogue! I see the prevalence of loneliness and devaluation of human connection as ever increasing! I am appalled by the rising incidence of ghosting and avoidance of deep, meaningful communication!

I'm 58 years old. Growing up as a young man there were no cell phones or computers to distract my generation. Me and my friends hung out all the time. We came together and had conversations and did many things together. This current generation has gone down the Social media rabbit hole. Their heads are constantly buried in their phones! I believe this is one of the biggest reasons why so many are lonely; no personal interaction. I call the cell phone addiction, Hypnotic States of America!

I agree with you, 137997! It is crazy how so many are so addicted to their phones and can't seem to look up long enough to have a meaningful conversation with someone, and yet not many seem to be voicing this problem. I grew up in the 80's and like you, NONE of us had Smartphones, texting or social media, yet we were happy people! We all talked to each other and hung out just like you and your friends did. We were great!

How unfortunate that it was know in 2012 😔that loneliness can have such a detrimental effect upon our health, yet we isolated our elderly during the pandemic and thereby increased their chances of death by 30%?!

As a man of action that reads philosophy and I think charles Bukowski had the human condition down to a science through his prose. This is not new it's just awareness like you said. Even in relationships you can isolate. You have to be happy with yourself before getting into another relationship i found.

We are all dreaming down what doesn't work and together Dreaming Up a New World & Restoring the Planet , as well as Humanity with ideas, systems, concepts, & tools with what will work.

The McMaster Optimal Aging Portal indicates: "Despite the wide variety of methods used to assess hearing, loneliness and social isolation, most studies have shown that hearing loss is associated with a higher risk of loneliness and social isolation. In fact, hearing loss is more associated with social isolation than loneliness.Nov 30, 2022" Yet another indicator that loneliness can affect our body systems.
