From George RR Martin's "The Hedge Knight."
If you like what you're hearing, be sure to check out my channel, where you can find all of my A Song of Ice and Fire recorded chapters in order in playlists! And leave a comment! I don't care about any youtube algorithm reach nonsense but I love hearing from people who are listening!
I am in no sense a professional reader, voice actor, or what have you. I began this audiobook project some years ago when some friends of mine jokingly said they'd read A Song of Ice and Fire (my favorite fantasy series) if I personally recorded the whole series in audiobook form and sent it to them. Having now made my way almost through the first two books in the series, I decided to join the small community of people who post their own amateur audibook readings to youtube, and share my efforts.
I have no intention of profiting off of the work that is copyrighted to George RR Martin. This upload is a tribute to a series I deeply love, and I strongly encourage you to purchase these books. You won't regret it.
Also I should give full credit to my cat, Claudio, for the frequent background meows and purring sounds you hear throughout.

Thanks as usual David. I much prefer this to the official version. Are you planning to do all 3 Dunk & Egg novellas in succession?
@DavidReadsASoIaF
@DavidReadsASoIaF 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks as always for listening! My current plan is to alternate the Dunk and Egg novellas with the Winds preview chapters. So after this I think I'll do Alayne I, Arianne I, and probably Theon I, followed by "The Sworn Sword," followed by Arianne II, Victarion I, Barristan I, Tyrion I, then "The Mystery Knight," and finally The Forsaken.

Other than the fact Jon favours his father and looks more like a Stark than any of Ned's trueborn sons, and strongly resembles his Arya in appearance. Arya herself is said to resemble a young Lyanna Stark, thus Jon looks like Lyanna.

I really like the understated way Egg comes to look at Dunk as father/older brother figure in the short time he's known him in book 1 before he insists to keep squiring for him. Its not hard to see why either, with his direct family being Maekar, aka Randyl Tarly/Stannis Baratheon 0,5, Aerion the lunatic, Daeron the Drunkard, and... Maester Aemon, who is the only good of the lot, but his father deemed him worthless, and packed him off to the citadel. Also his mother is dead, so no familial love and support to get there. This poor boy is desperate for any kind of normal familial attention, and he immediately latches on to Dunk as the Man treats him... well like a kid he's responsible for. And at that he does a pretty decent job for the era considering how little time he has here as Egg's guardian. He also proves himself to be what Egg actually wants to be. A real knight. Also, he beats the shit out of Egg's abuser twice, so there is that too, that probably left an impression on the lad. Of course, the main and meat of this chapter is ser Duncan's defining moment, the moment everybody in and out of universe would remember him for. Being a knight who remembered his vows... despite never having said them. That said, there is more to this chapter than just Dunk beating the shit out of Aerion. Because just like the Red wedding, it's actually built up in classic subversive martin fashion. Through this chapter, we are finally introduced to Dunks surprising cunning side, as he correctly deducts that Valarr is the key to his success. Dunk might actually defeat Valarr in the jousting portion, and so long as he does, he can most assuredly win, not due to any great skill at jousting, but because he's clever enough to spot the weak link. In other words, Dunk has found a way out, just like he does in book two. So long as he manages to man up, and defy all expectations, he can actually walk away from this as a made man. Valarr's armor is ludicrous fine steel, and plate at that. If he can win, he will be a rich, rich man, even if he's unseated in this tourney on the next round and loses his hauberk, so what? Even assuming that Valarr doesn't ransom back the armor for a massive sum, its high quality means that someone, somewhere would buy it for a pretty, pretty sum. All he has to do, is man up, accept his place in the world as a propper hedgeknight, along with all that comes with it, scorn and glory both. Of course, this story then subverts that, by putting him in a situation where he qctually does have to face a prince... but not Valarr. And there is no gold involved. Just the difference between what is right and wrong. Which really is the thesis of this book. As Dunk, who has never sworn the oaths, does what any true knight would do. He defends the innocent maiden from a vicious monster without hesitation. Not for glory, not for honor, not for coin. But just because it was the right thing to do. One thing i really like about this story, is that with later context, there is someone else Dunk resembles in this moment. Namely the man who for better or worse made the Era Dunk is living in. Daemon Blackfyre. The king who bore the sword. The king who from what little we've seen of him was way smarter than people gave him credit for, and who embodied chivalry to such an extent that he did what a true knight should do, even when it cost him everything. He did what he did because he regarded it as right, not whether it was the smart thing to do. Im honestly not sure if this parallel is something Martin planned, but when i realized it, i couldn't help but love it. Both of them were bastards from kings landing, both of them were naturally gifted(Daemon with unparalleled skill, and Dunk with a massive size and strength.) Both of them would win both favor and displeasure with the Targaryen royalty as the result of a tourney, and both of them would die at the top of the world, while also at the scenes of their greatest failures. One a king, the other a kingsguard. As far as both could possibly go. And both of them died true knights.

Calling Maekar part Randyl Tarly is too harsh. No one is as big of a piece of shit as him. Id say more Stannis. Maekar is grumpy and means well he just isnt good with expressing his feelings.
