My 24 hours on the beautiful island of Ometepe continued at Ojo de Agua, a beautiful natural spring on the island. Come with me as we visit Ojo de Agua and enjoy a delicious fish dinner!
My friend and guide Carlos from Visit Nicaragua and I headed over to a vendor to get some coconut water mixed with for de cana, rum, and condensed milk. It’s a drink called a Crazy Coconut, and they serve it inside the coconut!

It was amazing and delicious. It was very sweet and quite strong, but I couldn’t really feel the alcohol! Then, he added more rum for me. In total, it cost 90 Cordobas/$2.50 USD.
Then, I headed back to the water. It’s fed by an underground river and is very pretty! The water is shallow but the bottom is rocky, so you have to be careful. They also have a Tarzan swing that you can use. It’s so much fun!
After we finished, I got some refreshing pineapple juice. Carlos and I changed back into our clothes in the changing rooms and drove to the opposite side of the island, where the smaller of the island’s two volcanoes, Volcán Maderas, is located.
At Bar y Restaurante El Guia in Merida, we met a man named Simon, who works for a guy who owns a restaurant and keeps bees! Simon will also take you on a hike up Volcán Maderas if you want!
They had large buckets of honey and gave me a whole cup of it to try! The honey was amazing and wasn’t very thick. I’d never had honey like it in my life!
The honey was so tasty! They even put the honey in bags! Then, we got to see the hives, but we had to keep our distance. The bees could get angry and attack!
Then, we got some coconut ice cream. She takes the frozen coconut and condensed milk and mixes it together. It’s like pure, frozen coconut. It’s so tasty and is very common on Ometepe, so it’s a must when you visit the island. It was more of a slushee or sorbet than ice cream.
Next, we drove five minutes to Caballito de Mar (Seahorse Restaurant), which is located right on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. It’s a beautiful, rustic beach restaurant. In the kitchen, I watched the cooks clean and marinate the tilapia in garlic and other herbs. She also added green peppers, onions, and tomatoes.
They made two styles of tilapia: grilled and steamed. They both looked incredible! The grilled tilapia was meaty and delicious. I loved the tomatoes, and I loved that it was fresh and not farmed. I loved eating the fish with the plantains and a bit of Tabasco.
The steamed tilapia was so buttery and fell apart in my mouth. The vegetables in the grilled one were smoky and flavorful. I also really liked the skin of the grilled fish. It was nice and crispy and contrasted nicely with the meat!
I also made sure to eat the eyes and the cheeks. They’re my favorite parts!
From there, we drome to Playaita Peru, or Peru Beach, just in time to see the sunset with Volcan Concepcion. It was insanely beautiful! There’s also a small volleyball court nearby and some swings near the water.
But they also have kayaks that will take you out on the water, where you can get views of both volcanoes! What a beautiful way to end our day!
From there, we
