I think the issue is that crisp and crunch are two commonly used words with definitions that can used interchangeably. My opinion is that you can't compare that to Kleenix, Xerox, or McMuffin since those are unique brand names (words you can't find in a dictionary) that have been synonymous with their respective products over time due to great marketing. An equivalent of the David Chang issue, would be if a company picked two words out of a dictionary and trademarked products such as "paper tissues" or "muffin sandwich." What David Chang should have done was trademark "Momofuku Chili Crunch" and not solely "Chili Crunch."

this is the comment i was looking for. David talking about Crunch as if its some highly unique name to come up with and comparing that to the likes of Xerox and Kleenex didnt make sense.

I've still gone to school when I was covered in poison ivy from head to toe (I have classroom photos lmao), with ringworm on my face (yes! My face), stomach flu, bad cases of flu, you name it. And I'll get escorted to the nurse's office and have my mom called in and reprimanded that I can't be going to school in this state lmao. My mom and I can laugh about it now bc its been so long and she's mellowed out as she's aged, so she knows that she should've handled it differently. Only saving grace, though, was if I was throwing up. That was a guaranteed stay home excuse that worked on her haha

Original Chile crunch is salsa macha, a Mexican oil based chile oil. The creator Susie Hojel sued traders joes for using the name “Chile onion crunch” and she prevailed. Later she sued David Chang for using “Chile crunch “ and he decided to buy her trademark. Chile crisp is Chinese but Chile crunch is salsa macha, a Mexican chile oil

Wait David please don't shut down Lookism. The animation isn't finished yet and it ended on a cliffhanger, which is why I understand your point. I read the manhwa (ongoing) and the moral of the story is to show how ugly our society sets standards of beauty. Later on, the ML starts to realize that looks isn't all that and how his "friends" aren't really good. He starts to love his OG self and even starts to have a sense of self. It's an amazing story about self worth and self love. I'm hoping they continue the animation because it has such a unique story

Plus, crunch, crisp whatever, what’s the major difference? We all know it’s just a game of words, trying to trademark it is like that reaction KZbinr trying to copystrike every other KZbinrs who tried to do reaction video, f-ing ridiculous.

Small disagreement on your take about Lookism. I haven't watched the anime, but I read the webcomic on Naver's Webtoon app for a few years. Lookism is kind of a criticism on how looks focused South Korea is. Whether it does a good job or not is debatable lol. There are themes I believe it does a good job on, but there are others where the lessons were forgettable, or I didn't know enough about the topic to know if it was good or not. I dropped the webcomic because it evolved into a highschool gang war type story.

That's what I've been saying about this whole chili crunch situation. I thought everybody called it chili crisp and thought I was having a Mandela effect type thing. I remember falling into a little bit of a rabbit hole on tiktok maybe 6 months or so ago where I saw a lot of chili crisp vids. Everybody called in chili CRISP. Calling it chili crunch seems legally distinct enough to get a trademark on it IMO. And it seems like everybody is tricking themselves and lying to themselves that Chang was trying to trademark a broad term like the Fine Bros trying to own "React." This situation seems a lot different than that situation.

I don't think anyone's arguing what you're arguing. I think the public outrage is warranted. Yes, everybody knows he is well within his rights to enforce the trademark but whether he should've done so is the question and you agree the way he went about all of this was trash. He's a corny man who does corny things.
@DavidSoComedy8 ай бұрын
Nah lol that wasn’t the ORIGINAL narrative everybody changed their tune and took back all their comments and videos after they found out the original condiment was chili crunch. All the trademark Tik toks corrected yall. The great thing about the internet is all the receipts are online if you go back to the original outrage and early comments. So let’s be honest and say, we didn’t know that BUT we feel that it’s ethically wrong.
@invisibleadversary8 ай бұрын
@@DavidSoComedy If that was the case then I stand corrected but the prevailing narrative now acknowledges that he owns the trademark so I don't think a dead narrative necessarily needs to be addressed. Everybody knows now. Owning the trademark and enforcing it is bad enough. Honestly, my exposure to this fiasco in the press and on social media is folks acknowledging that he owned the copyright but was unethical for enforcing it but yes if there was a previous narrative then I do stand corrected but I don't think anyone's pushing the old narrative anymore so I don't think it need to be addressed really. Though his crisis management team wrote a script for him to read yesterday on his podcast so let's see how that tempers things.
@DavidSoComedy8 ай бұрын
@@invisibleadversaryno that’s not the point… If everyone, I mean everyone was taking him down and adamantly saying that it’s because he’s trying to own the whole condiment you can’t suddenly say… WELL EITHWR WAY! it’s wrong after you found out that you, not you personally, were intellectually and factually dishonest with your cancel culture takedown of HIS branded product. So yes it DOES matter what the original narrative was because it was a hit piece that was misdirected based on non facts so the level of criticism would have been different. It wouldn’t have been: “DAVID CHANG IS TRYING TO OWN A WHOLE CONDIMENT. ITS LIKE TRYING TO OWN KETCHUP” It COULD have been: “ David Chang owns chili crunch, is it still right for him to send out cease and desist for his own product that he created against other businesses in his community?” If someone accuses you of something and you disprove their original accusation but the come back with BUT BUT BUT THIS OTHER REASON IS WHY IM STILL MAD. It would be considered a reach. It’s not just whatever. It’s important.
@invisibleadversary8 ай бұрын
@@DavidSoComedy Respectfully, I feel like you’re fixating on a moot point. A lot of people were reacting to it for the first time knowing he owned the trademark. If there was nothing to be critical about now then people would’ve left him alone after the initial misunderstanding. The fact that he owned the trademark was clearly irrelevant. It's a bit more nuanced. McDonalds, Xerox ,and Kleenex have different relationships with their customer base than Chang does so even that is a false equivalency. There isn't some shady movement to take him down. He was more than fine before, he’s only a famous multimillionaire chef with adoring fans including Asian Americans. No one’s out to get him unless justified.

the first time I heard about this was from those Fung Bros.: the David Chang "Momofuku" chili crunch sh#t. It is like Huy Fong's "Sriracha" (hot sauce); a competitor brand could be called "(Asian fusion) Rooster Chili Sauce." I think that David Choe (the artist), Ming Tsai ("East Meets West with Ming Tsai (2002)," Martin Yan (1984: "Yan can Cook"); I grew up watching Julia Child; (1985) "The Frugal Gourmet" (Jeff Smith); "Iron Chef (America: 2006)" = it was treated like a sports game: Japanese chefs with English subtitles (it was more like a classic 1970's (Hong Kong) Kung Fu movie (a bad voice dubbing technique); Mark Dacascos (a Hawaii-bred actor); it was narrated by: Alton Brown, and had celebrity chefs, like Bobby Flay and Wolfgang Puck ("Spago's"/due to his appearances on David Letterman's "Late Night" talk show (NBC, before Letterman moved to CBS); those Emeril (LaGasse) commercials; "Chopped (2010)" (the Food Network); much later on, I watched these three gals: "Nigella Bites with Nigella Lawson" (2001); 'Giada at Home" or "Giada Entertains" (Giada De Laurentis); "Top Chef" (2013: hot (Indian) chef, writer, & show host: Padma Laksmi); "Hell's Kitchen with Gordon Ramsay (2005)"; not (1968: Galloping to) Graham Kerr (british guy); Joyce Chen (1966: "Joyce Chen Cooks") tv show; north Chinese cuisine: a trailblazing show; it was way beyond my time) or that "Dom DeLuise"-lookalike, Paul Prudhomme (1995: "Fork in the Road"); Anthony Bourdain, Guy Fieri ("Diners, Drive In's and Dives (2009)"), Adam Richman ("Man vs. Food"), Bobby Flay, Martha Stewart (who chilled with Snoop Dogg; went to jail for insider trading) or Paula Deen (the southern (diabetic) cook; she crapped on African-Americans/the Black people, with the "N-word"). The last four personalities: I just like them for their backstage/IRL antics and controversial stories.
