An Overview of Kant & Beauty

In this video, we discuss Immanuel Kant and his aesthetic categories of the "beautiful" and the "sublime." We discuss how Kant viewed transcendent aesthetic experiences as evidence that there’s something greater than oneself or one's mere animal appetites. We then explore Kant’s idea of "disinterested pleasure" and contemplated art’s relationship with function and utility.

Why do you think art has no utility? Beauty in all forms has utility. Beauty calms and centres the mind and spirit. Beauty inspires and arouses. Beauty motivates us and gives life pleasure and meaning. Beauty drives procreation, love, creation, architecture, advancement, and uncountable other things. We aren't insensible machines.

I use the word “beauty” only for art. I associate "beauty" with all those things Kant includes in his definition (order, harmony, dignity, ethics, uplifts society, etc.) but I don't completely disassociate beauty from sensual pleasure. For me, sensual pleasure is also there in visual arts (for example, color) and in music (for example, consonance vs dissonance). Beauty is both rational and sensual. On the other hand, I use the word "sublime" only to describe nature, not art. The natural world is truly overwhelming and infinitely large, complex and powerful. The feeling we get in the presence of this vast universe is sublimity.

Kant doesn't think you can only act morally when you're not already inclined to do the right thing independently of morality; it's just that it's easier to be sure you're acting morally when you're not already inclined to do the right thing. Similarly, he doesn't think beauty is incompatible with utility, that "there's a line in the sand" between things that have aesthetic value and things that have utility value; it's just easier to isolate aesthetic value in cases where there's no utility value to confuse the issue. (I'm quibbling with what comes at around 15:30 and following; I don't think Kant needs correction on this point. --I could be wrong.)

Beauty is not a loaded term. Beauty is a pure and simple. People's inability to perceive that pure, essential reality make it appear loaded. That's just what I think. But it does appear to be both objective and subjective, that we can agree on.
