Hi Dave! I have the regular ifi go Bar and can say it sounds incredible. While I can cannot say how much better the Kensei is because of its JVC implementation, I think, based on my own experience and your review that it is a Worthwhile purchase if you can afford it. A tip I would give for someone considering this device though is it sounds better when plugged into a high power usb C outlet. It sounds very good on phones and tablets but the extra current and power give it more dynamics and bigger soundstage. Also, if you need more power, pressing and holding the volume up and Down at the same time will toggle between high power and normal power. The balanced output on this device sounds better and has more power which is not necessarily because of the balanced output. It is just the way this device was projected. Finally, on my devices it was a battery hog like many other dongles of this type. Great review. All the best!!

Thanks for the comparison. I completely forgot to mention that the Kensei is a bit of a battery hog in comparison to others. Not terrible but about an hour less listening than others.

@d0nj033 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was like "What's an Eye Eff Eye Kenzee"? First of all, "iFi" is obviously a play on "hi-fi" meant to make it look like it's an Apple product name, and it's obviously supposed to be pronounced "Eye Fye". I don't know how so many people are not getting this. Secondly, "Kensei" obviously looks like a Japanese name, so obviously should be pronounced just like "sensei", with a different initial consonant.

Dave, to follow up, I like the GoBar Kensei, it is noticeably better than the iFI ZEN DAC v2, also it supports 24/192 and the bass is better and defined. A key decision aspect for me was the form factor, it is a super portable product! Good purchase! Thanks again for the comprehensive review. Only negative is that I cannot get it to work on the Lenovo Tab Plus (the iFI Zen DAC works), whereas on my Microsoft Surface it works (Win 11). Software is current on both.

After 2 months I have to say I'm still glad I bought it. Not cheap, but i think it's worth it. When I bought it, I also bought the Meze Audio 99 Classics as my very first "entry'" audiophile headphones - which was a huge step up from my 70 USD "gaming headphones" I had been using for years. I usually use it with Qobuz and I must say.. 24 bit 192khz music sounds so great... It's a whole new level of enjoying music. The detail is amazing. I'm hearing details I've never heared before in songs that I've been listening to for years. Especially background instrumentals or choirs are so much more noticeable. Amazing. If I'd have to name something negative it would be that both the headphones and the DAC get really hot after a while and some sweat starts building up in the ear cups. I'm looking to buy my next pair of headphones, which will probably be open back, but haven't decided yet which I'm gonna buy.

I have a couple of questions regarding the XBass feature: 1. Is it possible to adjust the XBass in levels, or is it simply an on/off function? 2. Additionally, how much is the bass boosted in terms of dB, and at what frequency does the increase peak (e.g., 60Hz)? I haven't been able to find any graphs that detail the exact nature of the bass enhancement.

The Kensei does fix that lunacy, and I'd bet that it's a more significant change than any SQ upgrade. The iFi Audio GoBar Kensei is capable of decoding lossy and lossless files, it can decode up to DSD256, natively 2x DXD, and PCM 32bit/384kH, MQA and MQA Studio. The K2HD mode is useable with all file formats. I tested it off my MSI Creator M16 A11UC and my Samsung S24 Ultra. I used it with Audirvana Studio and various streaming services ensuring it worked with both streaming and local downloaded music. Versus the S9 Pro Plus the GoBar Kensei is a significant upgrade in my opinion. Tone, timbre, detail retrieval and resolution are a major step up with the GoBar Kensei.

That K2HD feature is just throwing in a bunch of garbage data above 20k Hz, which you can’t hear anyway. The Kensei is rather heavy and I can feel it sag in my pocket. As for the cable, it's stiff very possibly the stiffest cable for a dongle I've experienced. As for the cable loosening up over time, I have no idea as it was returned to iFi after the review as it was a loaner. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Sure is one of the biggest dongs. Have they dropped the price now that MQA is kaput?
@TheHonestAudiophile6 ай бұрын
MQA is included because people have MQA files plus MQA is still available, not kaput.

Cirrus, is "Sear-Us" not "serious". Although, for $450 for an unknown CS DAC (one that can be had for pennies on the dollar), and an unknown Op Amp...charging $450 for a dongle DAC does beg the question... "Are you Serious, and where is the Logic?" So, perhaps your mispronunciation was a clever Freudian Slip? Also, Kensei is not "Kensy", its "Ken-Say". But, to be honest, i stopped watching after the first 3 minutes, because any company that wont spec their hardware, and wants to charge 4 times the going rate of other Dongle DAC's, itsnt worth the time. IFI used to be a qualityh company with good hardware at a reasonable price. Now it seems like they have hired a marketing exec from Bose. Real shame. I will be avoiding IFI in the future, as this is the third product in recent memory, where they have jacked the price up, and hidden the specs. Sorry IFI, yur'dun.

Why should I buy this dongle when I can buy a decent DAP at that price ?
@TheHonestAudiophile4 ай бұрын
Smaller than a DAP and more convenient. May have better sonics depending on the DAP.
