Hey there! Happy to hear you enjoy what we're doing at SCBP. I think the more the community gets the word out the better. Love love love shooting light and fast. I've not yet found a screen protector for the GH3 but I'll take a look at the one for the G5 and OMD which I bet will work just fine. The proguard is the one to get.

You're welcome. Roy. Yes, battery life is excellent. I've actually fitted the battery grip to mine, not so much for the battery but I like the balance of the camera with it. What I wonder is whether the second battery will ever get used.

Have you got Continuous AF switched to On in the Movie Menu? In manual movie mode with the 12-35mm it is stunningly fast and accurate to autofocus.

It's usually a while before firmware updates are applied at the factory. You needn't worry about the firmware update. It is very straightforward and you'll likely need to update your lenses as well. The instructions on the Panasonic and Olympus sites are very straightforward and easy t follow. Go for it!

Thanks David. What exactly is the issue using the GH3 in the studio? The current lens lineup seems to be OK. For me the speed is the thing that could be an issue. How is the shot to shot time? I don't need continuous shooting as I never use it. Focusing in a studio setting should be OK?
@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael. I enjoy doing the videos and posts like yours make them more than worthwhile. My favourite prime, probably my favourite lens, is the Olympus 45mm f1.8. I've done a review of it which explains why. With video, I mostly shoot on a tripod so OIS is better not used but hand held, I think it is very important to have it and I'd need a good reason to use a lens without it. The f2.8 zooms are great but my favourite all round video lens is the 14-140mm. A one stop solution for video.
@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
It's a good idea, thanks and I'll definitely get to it. Might take a little while, in many ways the basic important things are harder to describe than the more esoteric ones. It's amazing how much planning and thought these videos take - no sweat, though, I really enjoy doing them. On factor being that M34 cameras make video straightforward even for people like me who've never even picked up a 'proper' video or film camera.

The lenses work great on the GH2 but they may be bigger than you need. There's always the the little 14-42 compact zoom - slower but tiny. Custmizing the GH2, I put most of what I need on the Quick Menu and the stuff I find I'm going to most tranfer from there to the Fn buttons.

David, a firmware update has just been released for more stability in the built-in intervalometer for the GH3... do you think the later stocks released are updated? I just don't feel comfortable going through the hassle of firmware updates. Lol.
@paultaylor551312 жыл бұрын
Thanks. As far as quality is concerned would the GH3 hold up in a studio? I know it's not a D800 but 16MP isn't bad for resolution - and Ira showed very large prints. But as far as the speed of shooting frame to frame would it work? My GF1 is too slow as there is too much lag. The smaller camera still has benefits in the studio I think as I shoot children mainly and the larger cameras and lenses are more intimidating. It's just the speed of working that worries me as you need to rattle off shots

Thanks Sebastion. No, I haven't tried the 0.95s - I'm hoping to soon. There's a new 14-140 out, smaller and light and f3.5-f5.6. The two 2.8s cost a lot more together but do cover pretty much any normal photographic task. The 12-35 focuses usefully close, too.

David, thanks for your advice about the GH3. I sold my Nikon and my Lumix G3, I have just purchased the GH3 along with the 35-100 and 12-35 lens. (I have the GX1, 14mm, 45-200 and 100-300 lens) I am really pleased with its performance already and glad I made the change. One thing I found after the second time out with the GH3 was that I fired off 1190 shots and the battery was still showing full. I don't use the rear screen much. This was far in excess of the stated 550 shots. Thanks again.

@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
I'm presuming you would be using the studio flash, so shot to shot time wouldn't be an issue. I don't think there's any particular reason not to use the GH3 in a studio but with my professional background I've always gone for absolute top quality with Hasselblad/Mamiya gear so FF would be my mindset. In a professional spherea small format would be regarded as busking it a bit. But try the GH3 - if it works for you, why not?

I have been looking at 4/3 cameras for a long time because I have some good old Minolta MD lenses. I also bought an adaptor but I doubt that the camera is going to be able to do any autofocus with it. Does the GH3 have any special "focus assist" mode like the JVC camcorders have? This is the only way I think I am going to be able to get a good focus without watching the output on a high definition monitor.

Thanks for the great review, David, I have the same setup including the battery grip and the 12-35. I'm still learning about the camera and getting used to the differences between it and my Canon DSLR, however the picture quality has really impressed me. I recently took it and my Voigtlander f.95 25mm to a rock show late at night, and was able to take great pictures without any flash, it was unreal. Night photography just got a lot easier. My main huge gripe is focus peaking. My T2i has it.

Superb review, David. As a prospective buyer of the GH3 you've convinced me that I should get the two "flat" f/2.8 lenses rather than the older all-purpose 14-140 which ramps over a stop (ugh!) at the long end. Have you tried either of the f/0.95 lenses? Thanks again for the great review.

Fantastic! I enjoy very much your approach; by explaining how You set up/use the gh3 I understand a bit more why the have all these extra buttons, :-) too many! Thanks Guy. I'd love to try the G6 but I have to buy one if I do and I haven't got the money at the moment. I think it is a pity they haven't put the GH3 sensor in the G6. Good as the GH2 sensor is, it doesn't match the GH3. Olympus sales of the O-MD don't seem to suffer because they put the same sensor in some od the cheaper models like the E-PL5. G6 still looks a good camera for that money, though.
@DavidThorpeMFT11 жыл бұрын
Yes, the GH3 can be set to automatically magnify the focus area when you use a manual lens. It works well with my 105mm Sigma lens, for example, though wouldn't be much good for action shots, obviously. But for everything else, it's foolproof, either in or out of focus.

Here's the piece that puzzles me, David: As a newbie, I'm wondering why there is m43 sized sensors when you can put a FF sized sensor into a compact camera? Is it a hardware / size issue and will we (soon) .see the day where, possibly paradoxically, m43 sized gear is built around a FF sized sensor?
@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
Hi Dale. I use Adobe Lightroom for 99% of my editing, Photoshop occasionally but it's overkill really and Elements would do as well. I shoot everything RAW, convert to DNG in Lightroom and export from there in the form I need. For video I use the cheapest version of Sony Vegas. As you will have seen, my videos do not have much in the way of effects!
@JoEtsu198912 жыл бұрын
David, I wonder if you would spare the time to make a new set-up video for the less experienced users of the GH3? For a newcomer to digital photographer at this level, the settings are a bit overwhelming. It's even difficult to remember where all the settings reside on the Menu page. I'd like to get a handle on setting up and using the Quick Menu and a function button or two, then should be able to carry on from there.

Thanks for your review, especially your focus on still shooting capability vs. the usual video emphasis the H cameras get. It looks like this camera will address most of the issues I have with my EM-5. Better controls, better touch interface, better handling, better LCD articulation. I agree that it's the lenses that make MFT a good compact option. Any thoughts on the GH3's AF action tracking?
@DavidFredericks12 жыл бұрын
Excellent review. I agree with you about the size/shape. The GH3 just feels right. While the other M43 cameras may have overshot the mark on size, the GH3 brings it back just enough to be almost perfect. I'm really enjoying using it.
@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
Lens sounds great so long as there is enough depth of field for what you want to cover. With a FF and such a lens, it's likely be too restircted. With M34 such a high speed lens become practical.

David, I wonder if you can help solve a GH3 mystery. Two times now, I've changed the camera from horizontal to vertical position to take photos and the camera refuses to fire. Do you know of any settings that could make this happen? I'm hoping it isn't something to do with a sensor because I bought the camera abroad in order to get an English menu, so getting a hardware fault fixed would be expensive.

I'd use the GH3 for many out and about professional purposes like travel and business portraiture but studio, I don't think so. And for sport, combat zones, that kind of thing it doesn't have the out and out capability of a FF camera. Basically, a pro FF with all its size and bulk will do anything. But - not so long ago FF cameras were nor more capable than a GH3 or OM-D and pros were using them. My main doubts are over focusing in adverse conditions and the availability of specialist lenses.
@knifezoid12 жыл бұрын
Excellent review! Again learned a lot. I just got the GH3 and it is a powerhouse. Way more camera than I'm used to as a relatively new photographer. But not intimidating in any way. Rather it's pretty intuitive to use.
@DavidThorpeMFT11 жыл бұрын
Hi Spiros It's as good a MFT gets, on a par with the O-MD and little different from APS sensor cameras. I regularly use 1600 ISO. At 3200 and above noise comes in but I rarely go above 1600. To materially better the quality in normal use, you'd need to go to for a FF sensor.
@DavidThorpeMFT11 жыл бұрын
The GH3 isn't designed as a vdeo only camera and I imagine it would fall short in some respects of a dedicated machine in the handling. But given the price difference and the ability to take pretty much any lens because of the short mount to sensor distance and large number of adaptors, the future proofing is in place. GH3 sound is flexible plus you gave the option to record video to external HD... I'd give the GH3 serious consideration at the very least.
@jshaw660012 жыл бұрын
Since you have the battery grip, do you think it is worth it? I have big-ish hands(XL glove size) and while the GH3 grip doesn't feel too small, I know the battery grip will only make it better. I've been debating with myself for the past couple weeks on whether or not I should get the grip or just deal with rotating my hand with the shutter button and maybe put that $300 towards another lens like the Oly 45mm ƒ1.8.

@David Thorpe..does the OMD and Gh3 has the video quality
@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
Me too - I'd buy one straight away. Perfect pairing would be a GH3 and Pen with v'f. Both makers must know how often this is requested so I imagine they must be working on it. Wouldn't have to be the greatest vf, just usable so that the camera body didn't need to be enlarged to accommodate it.

I absolutely love the battery grip. I've had them before on other cameras and not liked them but the GH3 one feels really good for the camera balance and hold. In fact, I'd fit it if all it did was hold a spare the battery. Not cheap, though, as you say. Mind you shouldn't have mentioned the Oly 45mm - I don't think any M34 outfit should be without that little jewel. Have you seen my review of it?
@jshaw660012 жыл бұрын
Hi, what I did for my GH3's screen protector was I purchased a Spigen SGP Oleophobic (oil resistant/anti-fingerprint) film from Amazon (2 pack) and cut them down to size. They are made for the retina display which means they have much better IQ than the cheaper protectors. And the oil resistant coating actually works---normally I'm an matte screen protector guy but I didn't want to diminish the quality of the GH3's screen. I rarely ever have to wipe my screen. Hope this helps.

I'm hoping to try it. It looks excellent, a smaller, less costly camera with most of the assets of the GH3. I wish they'd put the GH3 sensor in it but I never found the quality of my GH2 wanting and the G6 has that sensor. Sounds a good buy to me.

Hi David, I'm trying to decide between e GH3 and the G6(has focus peaking and GH2's sensor). I'm a newbie and couldn't fully comprehend the issue with GH3's sensor crop, Should it be much of a concern? I shoot both still and video by the way.
@DavidThorpeMFT11 жыл бұрын
Although the G6 has the GH2's sensor, it doesn't implement the GH2's cropping strategy, so you can ignore that. The GH3 sensor is definitely better than the GH2/G6's, though, with a better dynamic range and noise factor. I like focus peaking for video but on the other hand the GH3 is just fabulous in its handling and ergonomics. The advantages of the G6 are its focus peaking and its price. Given the choice myself, I'd go for the GH3 but if money was a factor, the G6. I would be entirely happy with either.

Great review. Love my OMD EM-5, but the GH3 looks like a great camera as well. I actually like the smaller size of the OMD+pancake, which rules out the GH3. Hoping Oly or Panasonic come out with a gx2 / ep-5 with integrated viewfinder.
@DavidThorpeMFT11 жыл бұрын
I'm happy with it, as I was with my GH2. I prefer the rendering of the Olympus cameras but I think that is probably just a personal thing. I shoot nearly always in RAW so I could correct if I wanted and in fact I don't feel the need to do so.

Glad you liked the review. I used to put my face on the vids but I got fed up with being propositioned by supermodels so I stopped:-) You're right about the speed. I try and try to slow down but just speed up without noticing. Your remark will make me a try a bit harder, though. I need reminding.
@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
I'd like to do an OM-D comparison but Olympus don't even reply to my emails, let alone say no! The aspect, basically what I say is that you could get any of the aspect ratios by shooting at 4:3 and then cropping in software afterwards. OM-D v GH3, it really comes down to size preference. The only way is to handle them both and choose on that. Performance is similar similar and excellent. The GH3 has better video but both have better vid than most of us can use.
@Tapajara11 жыл бұрын
I have a Fujifilm HS20 that does that. Unless your subject is stationary and your camera is mounted on a tripod, it is almost useless, especially at high magnification. The feature zooms it even more and it is extremely difficult to keep track of what you are focusing on. You are basically looking through peep hole. The JVC "Focus Assist" is vastly superior. Basically while your image is in monchrome it shows a colored outline where it is in focus. You can see the whole image all of the time.
@REP96st12 жыл бұрын
look forward to your reviews... Honest, with no bias.. If there's a reason to rag on something, you'll do it. Great honest review.
@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
Given that you already have a large camera and want compactness, I'd go for the Olympus OMD. The GH3, while not big in absolute erms is a fair bit bigger than the GH3. Image quality is much the same with both and of course you can use any Panasonic lenses that you like,
@DavidThorpeMFT12 жыл бұрын
I haven't used the action tracking much yet. For my purposes it worked well with the GH2 and the GH3 should be better. Normal focusing with the two f2.8 zooms is notably fast so that ought to translate to good tracking. Re the controls, interface etc, the GH3 has brought it to a new level for M43, up to the best DSLR standards. The trade-off is size but, as you say, it's the lenses where the real M43 advantages lay. I might do a comparison of the GH2/3, so tracking would come into that.

I want to add that GH3 stores more information in lights than in shadows, so it is better to overexpose RAWs. Also, GH3 can use optics below f/1 with good depth of field. So, brighter optics compensate high ISO capabilities of full frame cameras. I hope Panasonic works on improving tonal range of GH5 RAWs, it would be a perfect hybrid camera then

My expertise is a lifetime as a news, show business and studio photographer. Stills, period. I only ever offer opinions or advice on things I know about and am confident in. From my KZbin videos, I think you would agree that I probably need to!

Hi Aaron. No, I haven't come across that, only the loosening of the rear monitor. I've just posted a video of how to fix that yourself but I think the hotshoe is a bit more difficult to get to as you 'd have to remove the EVF unit. Annoying to have a fault like that, easy to rectify but you've got to get at it first. Should be a warranty job, though.

@DavidThorpeMFT10 жыл бұрын
I don't think the stills quality will be a big advance on the GH3 - the GH4 will use the same sensor as the GX7 and I personally don't notice much difference between them. I think that the technology has reached a plateau at the moment. It's as good as I need anyway. 4k doesn't interest me greatly, such a lot of resources used and I have nothing on which to play it back. But I'm no video specialist. I will get a GH4 for the improvements over the GH3, better viewfinder etc. But if I didn't want one to write a menu book about and review etc I 'd stay with the GH3. Physically they are nearly identical, I'm pleased to say.

the fuji X1OOs and XE1 have really nice image quality, very close to full frame, but the Olympus OMD is a smaller system to carry around, and the Panasonic GH3 with the two f2.8 zoom lenses is a pretty pricey investment, but without thinking about the money, i'm still not sure what is the smartest way for me to go, so I keep putting it off and waiting to see what else comes out

I still haven't seen the GH3 hear in Thailand, not sure why, it looks really nice but not sure if I would buy it over the OMD, and I am still considering the fuji x100s or XE1, or Sony NEX, I want a smaller system to bring with me everywhere, and just use my 5D mark lll for actual photoshoots, its hard to make a decision because it's not just the camera investment, it's also the lenses, and I'm sure sure who's lenses I want, but the Olympus 75mm 1.8 is sweet, and the panasonic 25mm 1.4 hmmmm

RAW files are the original binary data from the sensor. You export them to JPG or PNG or whatever. They aren't usable anywhere as RAW. It's a bit like a negative. If you wanted to crop a negative from 6x6 to 6x4.5 aspect ratio, you wouldn't cut down the negative, you'd make a print of 6x4.5 inches or whatever. Ditto with RAW, export to 4:3 ratio. It's a sad fact of digital cameras that they lose money so fast. The GH3 is a highly capable camera and €120 is a derisory sum, everything to do with the market and nothing to do with the value of the camera. But, the seller's loss is the buyers gain and you have a bargain! You'll enjoy it, I'm certain.

I'm glad this is a review dedicated to photography... Thanks again. Again, Panasonic ought to give you a complimentary GH3 kit / GH4 for your work - I'll make my move (purchase) based on pro-user's reviews (not that script Panasonic handed to Philip Bloom, et al.)

I love my GH3. For me its my camera of choice to take on commissions. I shoot and send my pick from the GH3 right to the art director. Nice video as always.

Good review, it convinced me to purchase one today second-hand, they are at very good prices at the moment.

Thanks Kevin! With the new GH5 imminent prices of the GH4 and GH3 inevitably drop. The effectiveness of the camera doesn't though and a once expensive camera turns into a bargain.

Thanks for getting back to me David. As you said it might come down to size of the body for me. I use Canon and the Canon M is a joke!

Hi Giulio, take a look at my reply to 'therichreports' about the screen protector.

I finally got myself one of these beasts last August to replace the G5 and the Oly epl5. I was planning on having this and keeping my epl5 primarily as a walkabout camera and because I really liked the JPEG out of it but sold it as the gh3 is as good if not better for… well everything. And with the pancake lenses (14mm &/or the 14-42 x lens) it is still small enough to put into my jacket pocket and light and unobtrusive enough to carry around in the hand.

psionicdreams Yes, the GHs look bigger than they are because of their DSLR type design. What I like especially is the way that the rear screen folds into the body glass inwards. I've been surprised at how much more willing I am to put it in a pocket or a small bag because of that. I use a wrist strap on it for hand carrying, works well.
