Excellent question! We shoot most of our videos on the Sony FS700 although the segment where we test the Panny mic was on the GH3. We tested the focusing and indeed the focus does lock during recording using AF lock. You can at anytime change between autofocus and manual with the flick of a switch. It's really very well designed and did I mention how nicely it continually focuses! Smooth and predictable. Thanks for the inquiry. Chris @ The Camera Store

The Panasonic GH3 does have continuous autofocus during video recording. However, whenever shooting video with large sensor cameras I recommend manually focusing to keep distracting focus changes to a minimum. This video was filmed with the Sony FS700, the only camcorder I have a love connection with. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

Nothing in the footage shot yesterday. I'll do more tests with fine patterns. It's certainly better than the earlier Canon SLRs or the D800. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@TheCameraStoreTV12 жыл бұрын
We didn't mention the moire as we didn't see any in the footage from this video (feel free to correct me, internet!), but we have since done a moire test in store and while there is a VERY slight amount when shooting fine fabrics, it's very well controlled. Worlds better than the earlier Canon camera and the Nikon D800. Also remember, no one currently has production firmware, so the image quality could change. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
@TheCameraStoreTV12 жыл бұрын
We'll look at the GH3 again once we get a production unit. I think the moire and aliasing thing is getting a bit hyperbolic. We had to shoot for a good amount of time deliberately trying to produce moire, and it was still much better controlled than almost any other large sensor camera. Keep in mind as well that the firmware is still beta in all the cameras floating around. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

Another great, useful and informative camera review. I'm really liking these videos, so much better than another Digital store's much viewed vids. The Camera Store tells me what I need to know. The GH3 looks like a fine camera too, though the price isn't mentioned....it's not cheap!!
@TheCameraStoreTV12 жыл бұрын
At the same equivalent focal length, and same aperture, the D600 will have much smaller depth of field. If you want a 50mm equivalent look, the GH3 is actually using a 25mm lens, which has much larger depth of field than an actual 50mm lens on the D600. You can still achieve shallow depth of field with the GH3, just not very easily with your wide angle lenses. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

For video work, unless you crave the shallowest depth of field possible, the GH3 has far and away the best quality. For stills, I'd put the 5D MK III slightly ahead in terms of low light performance, but otherwise the GH3 is a tremendous camera for the price. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

I like a lot about this camera. And I agree, it would be good if the battery pack had XLRs. I am wondering if the GH3 ban be used for live stream over the internet?
@TheCameraStoreTV12 жыл бұрын
While I like the footage from the D600, the GH3 is better in every area, unless you need ultra-shallow depth of field. The controls of the GH3 are much better, especially regarding aperture control and audio levels. Also, you can use the beautiful EVF while shooting with the GH3, while the D600 only allows you to use the LCD. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

Great review (as always - love your enthusiasm) but why no mention of the moire and aliasing problems that others have reported (one of the biggest positives about the GH2 image)? Did you not see any such problems? Could this be a dream come true? Or is the problem still there and just didn't show up due to the environment you were shooting in?

Thanks Jordan - appreciate the response and additional info. I certainly hope it doesn't turn out to be a problem, I've been excited and waiting for this camera for a long time now, and there's clearly so much that's right with the camera! I guess I got worried with all the of early footage examples that are kicking around on Vimeo etc showing aliasing and Moire - which could be a deal breaker for many... I wouldn't mind owning shares in Mosaic Engineering right now!

This has certainly been long awaited. It will be interesting to see how it compares directly to something like the t4i, since by all appearances, it looks like its starting price is going to be substantially higher. That being said, as a video-geared ILC, it might just be worth it. Maybe.

I thought I was seeing the "weird kinda thing" described @ about the 10 minute mark in this video and I found that it only occurred when the colorspace setting (in Rec tab) was set to Adobe RGB rather than S RGB, so I wonder if that might have been what you were seeing there too... in any case, in my experience using S RGB color space seems to result in a consistent look between video recording and the preview at other times

Good review. Just curious if the image stabilizer in the GH3 is effective enough to shoot while literally on the move (i.e. walking and running). In my experience with DSLR's, without having a separate image stabilizing device connected (i.e. Steadicam), this is a very big challenge to overcome with a bare camera.

I've seen some videos of the GH3 and there is a lot of moire and aliasing really bad. I do not know if Panasonic can fix moire and aliasing with a firmware update. Rumor is GH3 has a Sony sensor that's because Panasonic wanted a better stills camera. Removing focus peaking is a downer for manual lens.
@photographerjonathan12 жыл бұрын
I have been really looking forward to hearing about the GH3, like everyone else, I already know everything about the new features, but I think the main question that most people have is, is the video as good as a hacked GH2, I heard someone say that the new sensor isn't as good as the old one for video, but i don't know if that is true or not, it does seem to have better ISO performance, but does it have that amazing sharp beautiful look in the video that a hacked GH2 has, that is the question ?

Nice review, thank you. Can you do a review with more low light filming and with a photo critique?How about a side-by-side comparison with an upper end Canon / Nikon? In Canada the price is: $1300 body, $1100 12-35mm and $1500 for the 35-100mm with no kit 'discount'; the total being $3900. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I believe $2500-$2700 is a more realistic cost, considering the mark-up in electronics, access to high quality lens(es) (techniques), et cetera. Any thoughts / trend knowledge..
