Nice work, very clean. Most people don't understand if a radio uses a field winding, you can't replace with pm speaker unless you put a choke where the field winding was.

Just finished both videos and it was so pleasing to see this collaboration on YT within our radio community, it was great team work for sure. 2 thumbs up for both of you. Seeing the re-winding go so smoothly was immensely satisfying so was the moment Don got sound from his bench speaker. I'm happy for both of you and never had any doubts you could pull this off Dave. Thank's for sharing. I'm off to re-string a Marantz receiver now and i'll try to shoot some footage to help others sometimes struggling with this part. Have a great day mate.

Boy Dave, do you get around! I was checking out an old 50's tv series on YT, and one of the right side of the screen video choices had a '46 Packard radio restoration. I've never really checked out car radio repairs before, but after checking out the history of the Packard brothers and the "Quality" of their work, I thought I'd check this one out. You already know where I'm going with this... Another David Tipton fan. Another person who's humble enough to learn from your efforts. I thought that was too cool. But then to see the comments and finds you had left one hour ago ( ! ? ) I shared with my wife, and said "what are the chances?" Just wanted to let you know. Also, like him, I'm looking forward to your AA5 restoration! Take care Dave! -Chris

Hi Chris, I was blown away by that Packard car radio Vern restored. It fitted seamlessly behind the dash. Any early car radios I had anything to do with had bowden cables and a big unit above the passengers feet. As usual he did a great job restoring it. I was surprised when Vern started rolling over the vibrator lip in the vice... Haha... he gave me credit as he did it which was marvellous to see. I am in contact with a number of fellow KZbin radio restorers and we are able to help each other out and I think I can see a shift in KZbin channels as we learn from each other. My next adventure is a radio sent to me by Buzz1151 in the US, it's not an AA5, it's an AC/battery set. Thanks Chris 👍🙂

@@DavidTipton101 That will be great! BTW..I spent Friday's day off work with 2 high school rock band mates at the "Back to the 50's" car show at the Minnesota state fairgrounds. It's possibly the largest old car show on earth. (Great Fun!) Anyway, I had a chance to share with Mick, our drummer about you, your channel, and how much I've learned over the last few years watching. His dad was a radio, stereo and tv repairman. He had tons of tubes, parts and knowledge. Mick said his dad shocked him one time when Mick was trying to fix an old radio. His dad came in, watched and then told him to flip the set over and told him the exact part to replace. He did, and he was blown away by his Dad's knowledge. Mick inherited all his dad's neat "stuff"! I never fail to pass on info like your channel when I'm sharing. I'm hoping Mick checks out your channel. Take Care David! -Chris

Getting your coil winder set up to keep the wire smooth and flat reminds me of getting my Webster-Chicago wire recorder properly adjusted to wind the wire smoothly onto the takeup spool and have it lie flat without tangling. And then after having listened to whatever had been recorded on the wire, I have to wind the wire back onto the supply spool without breaking or tangling it...always a bit nerve-wracking. Here you don't have to worry about transferring it back and forth between spools. Nice repair!

Always interesting to watch coil winding, David. For some radios so it is an integral part of the radios repair. Many old radio sets get scraped because the repairer is unable to rewind a burnt-out IF coil, transformer or speaker coil. As you show, David, with a bit of patience, all can learn to repair/rewind coils.

I missed commenting on this one. This looks kind of like 👍 one of Shango066's radios (by style). Be wary 😟, in case this radio 📻 has dual dial cords. I hope 🙏 it has a dial cord restringing diagram inside the cabinet. I even see that you're using your wire winder here. Hopefully your speaker 🔊 cone is okay. By the video 📹, I think the speaker is field coil. Your friend, Jeff.

After you get more experience you will realize the number of turns and DC resistance is ridiculously inconsequential. You can simply use wire close to the same size and fill the form with wire. It will work fine without all the hassle. The number of turns and resistance will be easily close enough to what the original was to work fine.
