Interesting thought. I agree, Crystalis looked very different from any 8-bit Ys game but I could see them becoming more similar over time. Maybe by the 16-bit era, certainly by the 6th gen consoles.

This actually takes place after Ys 4(celceta) Unlike Zelda, where each game stars a boy named link, adols age in each Ys game tells roughly when each game takes place. Adol is 19 in Felghana. Placing this after Ys 1, 2, 10, 4. In that order. For those who care to know the timeline its Ys Origin>1&2>10>4 (Celceta)>3 (felghana)>5>8>6>7>9.

​​@@greayeve3035 The games themselves are written so you jump into the series at any point (except II), so there's no shame in starting at a later point in the series. Oath (III), Celceta (IV), Origin and VIII-X are on PS, but I&II and V through Seven aren't.

I got about 20 hours into 8 and was bored to tears. The sections they made me play the woman character really took me out of the experience. One of the weakest entries in the series imo. Only good part was building up the camp.

I had the SNES version of this, the side scroller, as a child, I loved the music and atmosphere. fast forward 20 years later I found out this game was remade on PSP (same version as this) Got it, played with my friends passing around the PSP which was hooked up to the TV, and we beat it on Nightmare mode. One of my best gaming experiences, I will also be getting this version, this game is criminally underrated

I played YS: IV with an english patch and beat the game in four days! Ys was always as I understand ahead of its time with voice acting! Keep up the great work!

I was going to ask which version of Ys IV with a translation patch you beat, but then you mentioned voice acting. I'm glad you enjoyed Dawn of Ys. I was the voice for a couple of the characters & it's still one of my favorites of the series. Though I still need to get around to playing it fully translated. I originally beat it in Japanese and then again when the text was translated but not the voice acting. The voice acting was done several years after the text translation.

Actually I brought the original version Ys IV: Mask of the Sun from 1993 with no voice acting, still great game.Sorry about the mix-up, The Ys series was one of the video game series ahead of its time with voice acting is what I should I have said, again sorry about that!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, David. I love little review/recommendation videos like this. I am technically a latecomer to the Ys series, yet I did have the strange interaction with Ys 3 back as a kid in the SNES era, but I have adored my time with it ever since rediscovering it on the switch and PC. I now look forward to any new Ys release or rerelease. Also, I caught that namedrop of Crystalis. I loved that game as a kid, and I replayed it and beat it on an old NES about a decade ago. What a great time, great gameplay, exploration, and MUSIC!

You're a Ys guy, aren't you, Dave! The grinding in Ys origins is awesome. Stay away from those carbs, dude, they destroy your proteins(although carbs fill your stomach and taste ok). Great show, Dave, you seem to be a warm-hearted and symphatic guy. The professional way of doing sit-ups: breathe in as you are going up, breathe out on your way down. Your punch starts in your thighs! Great show!

Great review. I think I’m one of the few people that love the original Ys III (I also have the SNES version), but I am a fan of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. My personal favorite Zelda of all time. I also love Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest as it is the first RPG that I played. 😂 Maybe there’s something wrong with me. Keep up the great work, brother.

I kinda wish this was based on the PC release, because I hate my sanity. PSP makes things a bit easier with Double Boost. It's not a major gripe though, as this is by far my favorite Ys title, and being accessible to more people is generally a good thing.

The one correction I will say is that the events of this game, despite essentially being the ‘canon’ Ys 3, do not occur right after 1&2. Nordics and Celceta both occur between 2 and Felghana. You know, just to keep people on their toes when trying to parse the timeline. For anyone curious about the wacky chronological order of the series, it’s: Origins 1 2 10 4 3 5 8 6 7 9 So, you know, totally logical and simple. 😂

The original Oath in Felghana was actually released in 2005, on PC, using the same engine as Ys VI. It then got ported in 2010 to the PSP, with downgraded graphics, but some new stuff, like voice acting. The PC version was then released on Steam worldwide in 2012, with new high resolution and widescreen options, and then got a patch in 2020 with the voice acting from the PSP version and the alternate soundtracks from the older Japanese PC versions. So, you could say Memoire isn’t really a remaster, it’s a port with all the stuff that was put in the game over the years, plus a few new bells and whistles, like voice acting for Adol and some new portraits.

I got the NA physical this morning, think it only released as collectors edition, the a nice cloth with elena and a cat, I always like cats in Ys and trails games, does she have it as like a pet that helps attach or its just a random image

I bought YS Oath on PC ages ago, started it, but abandoned it when I found out it actually didn't bother with its voice acting. Got it on PSTV instead. Remember that thing? I loved YS 3 back in the day. It was too hard for me when I was 9, but I loved the gameplay and the music. Beat it later in life, but really enjoyed Oath. Very disappointed the voice acting and GOL improvements aren't being added to the already existing PC release. A missed opportunity.

Most of the voice acting from the PSP version got backported to the PC version in a patch a couple years back alongside the added soundtracks, at least. The other changes didn't make it over, though.

I'm glad this is finally on modern consoles and it being on the Switch is really good for a similar portable experience to the PSP version. I do have this on PC though, so I'm in no rush to get it. I'll put it on my wishlist on Switch and get it on sale eventually though. I'm hoping The Ark of Napishtim gets a port like this too, and it would be cool if they could salvage the voice acting from the PS2 version even though it's not as good as Felghana's. Also fast travel does exist in this game, but it's with an item you get about halfway through.

I've only played through Ys Origins, which i beat with each character to get the canon ending and you can definitely see it's using the same game engine. I have the game on Steam, so i'll play it on my Steam Deck, but before i do that, i'll play through Ys I & II first.

Besides Ys origins, 8 & 10. I’m definitely fairly new to the Y’s games. I gotta admit, out of the ones I’ve listed that I’ve played, Ys Origin’s is my favorite in terms of the gameplay, and seeing Felgahana use the same engine of Y’s origin, I expect I’ll enjoy it as much as origins. Now I Can’t wait for the switch port of Ys: memories of Celceta, it’s still so weird to me that when Falcom announced the PS4 version of the game awhile ago, they didn’t announce a switch version along side it….I guess it’s better late then never I suppose.

Fast travel does exist. You can do it when dogi's not sister gives you her item about 2hrs into the game. Thise save points work as fast travel points

I played the Ys games from the first day I bought on clearance the Turbo Duo where Ys : Books 1 & 2 was included and that game alone blew me away. Yes I did play Wanderes of Ys on the Turbo Duo Duo and still have my copy but I don’t think it’s the black sheep of the series and I played that game over a dozen times. Ys V is more of the black sheep of the series. But enough of that. I played the Japanese version of Oath of Felghana on PC and thanks to a certain person that came out with the translation I was able to play it in English. I only had the Ys games in English on PSP digitally. I am truly such a geek for the series that I already played the Japanese version of Ys Thr Oath in Felghana on the Switch and PS5. Yes I bought the English version for both systems again that’s how much of a fan I am of the series among having so many soundtracks from the game series and other items. As a old school íput this series as my number one favorite RPG series. I will continue playing these games. I only wish they brought over. Ys V in English but also in a reimagining form. Can’t wait to play it again tomorrow. ❤. Love your review on this game too.

This is already out on steam. Just Title Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Been on steam for like 8 years The steam version doesn't has a few QoL features that are in the memiore version though Namely W Boost, refined portraits and the 2x experience multiplier for getting a 999 hit count. (Steam version maxes out at 1.99

I love the boss fights in this game even though I'm so bad at dodging Chester or timing the shield in the final boss fight. I'm probably getting this when a sale hits mainly because I have no idea if the gamebreaking bug exists in this edition. I bought this digitally on my Vita and my NG+ run got cut short because of it.

I'm playing Ys 6 and 7 because it reminds me of a Yankees game back in the states. FORMORE, I like playing Ys 1, ys 2, ys 3 on different consoles bc they are ported. These are favs first 3 ys games. I feel like I'm playing a computer game or something. ... I feel like I've come here before... Maybe I'm imagining it...? It's no computer game, but it's fun enough. It makes this computer game worth playing. I doubt, this based on hydlide. People say that Ys is hard, but that's just easy. Someone is behind all this. It's all part of the game.

8 bitDo sn30 Pro is a great jack of all trades, insanely great d pad, SNES controller style for retro game emulation, plus the added buttons and sticks for modern games, there is also a version with actual hand grips like a standard controller as well along with 2 mappable buttons on the back, usbc and Bluetooth compatible. I know I sound like a spokesperson but I'm not, I just truly think they're the best 3rd party controllers you can get and imo compete with if not beat out an Xbox, PS5 or switch controller. Have owned both versions and haven't had any stick drift in years
