I make a Christmas cake every year. I bake the actual cake in October; it's a very rich fruit cake with alcohol in it, and then I store it in an airtight tin and 'feed' it a little more alcohol (orange liqueur, drizzled over the top) a few more times over the weeks leading up to Christmas. This gives it a chance to mature and deepen in flavour. Then, three days before Christmas Day, I cover it with a layer of marzipan (almond paste,) and then the next day I cover that with a layer of almond-flavoured royal icing and put some Christmassy decorations on it. Then, once Christmas Day has arrived, we work our way through it over the next few days and into New Year. It's a very rich cake, so you can only eat small pieces of it at a time, but it just epitomises Christmas for us.

I make my Christmas cakes the first week in October, too but I feed mine with brandy and I soak the fruit in tea overnight before baking. Then, at the end of October I forage for sloe berries and make Sloe Gin which is ready just in time for Christmas day.

I bake mine in July..soak the dried fruit and candy peel in brandy to soak it up and be moist..if there is any brandy over I use it to drizzle into the cake every week leading up to November..l keep it in a cool dark place wrapped in greaseproof paper..then in November l make the marzipan and put it on the cake..leave that for two weeks then use royal icing to ice and decorate it..I much prefer using royal icing as I find its less sickly and keeps better..my mom showed me how to do it all.. l also make Christmas puddings..again l soak all the dried fruit and peel in brandy overnight then use the juice of the oranges and lemon to get it moist l add 2 pints of Newcastle brown ale mix it all up..cover with a dry clean tea towel ..leave overnight to really soak in..Next day always give it one last stir and make a wish. Then steam them for 8 hours..we have an old fashioned electric burco boiler which we put outside with the electric lead through the catflap😂🙉..and just keep topping the water up with hot water..after 8 hours..take the pudding cloths and greaseproof paper off and cover and allow to dry for 2 to 3 days..once they are kind of lifting from the edge of the basin you make holes with sqewers and pour brandy into them. Do this weekly like your cake and keep them tightly sealed with tinfoil.

My favourite Christmas Days have been those where I've been a teaching assistant in one of the local Hill Tribe schools in northern Thailand. Always a joy . . . 2003 was special too - 12 hours on a slow train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. A proper 'old-school' train, too. Wooden slatted seats, a little open stage between carriages where you could stand and watch the countryside slide by, an unexpected meal as part of the fare, and not another farang to be seen. All rounded off by meeting the lady who a few years later became my wife . . . and it is she I assist in the schools.

British person incoming with knowledge!! The two on the couch with Henry Cavill are Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon. Both Welsh comedic actors. They were in a sitcom called Gavin and Stacey which was popular back in the day. James Corden was in it, it was one of his first big roles. Rob Brydon also presents "Would I Lie To You" which I think has come up in the past because Lee Mack is one of the regulars. In the first clip with the distancing...the man in the suit is Nish Kumar he's a comedian and Hugh errr....something..is a chef. Hence the micro managing in the kitchen! Also I imagine now you've seen Rob once you'll never be rid of him. He constantly shows up in things. He was even very briefly in the Barbie Movie 😂😂 The two in the first distancing clip you didn't know, the man in the suit is Nish Kumar he's a comedian. And Hugh....someone...I forget his surname in the fancy shirt..is a chef. Hence the micromanaging in the kitchen😂

As if I didn't love your comments enough already, this one is particularly good with the intro of "British person incoming with knowledge" LOL. That's awesome. Thank you so much for ID'ing the two guys I didn't know. I really enjoyed how you wrote, "Now you've seen him you'll never be rid of him." lol. That's how I feel about Elizabeth Banks. I like her just fine, but I feel like everywhere I turn movies-wise (and even some tv), it's like, "Oh, Liz, you're here."

Welcome back, hope you feel better soon. I had the cough thing for a full 10 days and even lost my voice, so lots of hot tea with honey was on the menu. I adore Carrie Fisher too and wondered if you had seen Postcards from the Edge with Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. If not, that would be a fabulous reaction. It hasn’t popped up on many reactors channels at all. It’s based on Carrie’s book and I think she wrote the script. Glad to have you back! Peace …

I’m really loving these reactions!! I stumbled upon the Graham Norton show a couple years ago on KZbin & would watch HOURS of videos lol As for Christmas, also being American lol, we do the normal celebrations. Only thing that may differ is we do the immediate family’s Christmas celebrations on Christmas Eve and then spend the next day traveling to other families houses. We unfortunately won’t be doing anything on the Eve this year but the day of, we’ll probably meet up at my sister in laws or my Mom’s best friend’s house 🤷🏻‍♂️

I am so like u in that I am first & foremost a Halloween person. My bday happens to be in Oct so that time of year was always my fav. Now that im older & more physically disabled i try to skip over my bday & i cant get to all the haunted stuff, but my love of Halloween & all things spooky is still kicking. I do enjoy Christmas though as well. Since my kids are all spread out in age ive collected many homemade ornaments over the years, so our new tradition we started last year is instead of putting up this big fancy tree all pretty i put up a tree and covered w any and all of our combined 6 kids plus 2 grandkid & our parents keepsake ornaments. No fancy bulbs. Just all their stuff. We added all the ones weve collected that has names or sayings, just any that may be silly. Obviously w lights & garland & not gonna lie that in my whole life this has now become our favorite tree. When everyone is here on Christmas they all get a kick of actually looking at and sitting around the tree and pointing out them & sharing the stories & memories about them. Its made the tree kinda the focus, but its really made just putting us all together as a family around that tree whats most important at Christmas time!!❤💞

Welcome back, David. Hope you and Marc had a fantastic time in Hawaii! We have unusual "traditions" for Christmas. Some out of weirdness and some out of laziness. LOL! Firstly...I make Lasagne instead of a chicken or turkey, etc. It started YEARS ago when I wanted to give our mom a break from all the cooking she did for Thanksgiving. Especially as she started getting older. I offered to make lasagne and they really enjoyed it. So they just started asking me to make it every Christmas after that. In fairness my family is really small so it's not a lot of cooking for me. For myself, I don't bother with Christmas trees. I used to have to put our family tree together by myself every year when I was younger and it became more of a chore. So now that I have my own place, I cozy up the spaces with lights and trinkets and tchotchkes, instead of a tree. I hung the lights and have left them up year round. Frankly I'm too lazy to take them down every year and don't see the point. LOL! But I bring all the other decorations out when the holidays come around. As for my siblings and myself...we stopped getting each other Christmas gifts years ago too. We honestly just got tired of trying to think of different presents for each other. Especially since our B-days are later in the year as well. We collectively chose to just spend more time together with dinners, lunches, etc. Glad you're back. Feel better!

As someone else mentioned Ruth and Rob starred in Gavin & Stacey which was a very, very popular comedy sitcom in the noughties about two people who, i think, meet and start dating online then decide to get married and their families and lives come together. She also wrote/created it with James Corden (pre-America). I still haven't seen it (which is why im not sure on the plot 😅) but I imagine it would be a potential reaction series contender.

I would say, its an ensemble cast, with some very funny and fabulous British actors - so don't let JC put you off.. It was the kind of role he did well, before he became super famous and they rather stupidly put him in everything ... It a comedy about families from two parts of the UK Barry (South Wales) and Essex (South East England) and a romance between a young and and woman from each place- it was written by JC and the lady on the couch Ruth Jones... Hope you get well soon David! I've been coughing for over 4 weeks now... Here in Finland the main day of celebrating is Christmas Eve. Most people have it off work, as well as Christmas Day and Boxing Day. I only make a select few Christmas dishes on the 24th because my husband and kids don't care for them that much. But the next day we meet extended family at my mom's and she does many of the traditional Finnish Christmas dishes: ham, turkey, different casseroles (potato, carrot, rutabaga), peas, cheeses (including blue cheese with ginger bread cookies), different kinds of fish (there may be up to like 5 different kinds: salmon, smoked whitefish, preserved herring), liver paste, rice porridge... If you'd like to see Will Smith playing a gay hustler, watch "Six Degrees of Separation". His first film role. It also stars Donald Sutherland and Stockard Channing, whose performance is downright operatic. (She treats every speech like an aria, it's grand.) Kevin Bacon has remaeked on the awkwardness when the DJ plays "Footloose" when he enters a place. Argh.

Actually I've seen this!!! I don't recall how it hit my radar, and if memory serves I saw it years ago by myself, but you are right- it was so good. And further to your point, I specifically remember Stockard Channing being particularly excellent - slapping that Sistine Chapel ceiling and flipping the Kandinsky saying, "Chaos, control. Chaos, control." :) lol @ the Kevin Bacon part

Thank you!! I don't remember hearing a lot about it at the time, and then I kind of forgot about it. I love Emily Blunt though- I first liked her from Devil Wears Prada, of course, but I fell in love with her after Young Victoria.

I haven't, but I am sure you are right. Carrie Fisher is one of those celebrities who I wholeheartedly admire and am fascinated with, and yet I haven't seen a lot of interviews or specials with or about her. I love anyone who is that direct and honestly funny though, and who unashamedly brings their dog with them lol
