David - very honoured for the shout out, much appreciated! Thanks for the traffic - gained 20 new subs over night, so yeah - ta much-ly!!! Regarding the intelligence - ha, I may appear smart, I think that's just my beard?! Just trying to watch your explanation of the CMOS binary logic melted my brain! :) I know enough to get by, let's leave it at that! You've called me out on my projects though, i've got lots in the pipeline, I think I have to finish them up now and record them, and now get my little apprentice involved too. She wanted to be in the Groot one, but I was being mean and she had to operate the camera! You messaged me about one of my postbag videos, think it was the Cherry MX keys and making an ATTiny85 keyboard. Got lots of simple little ATTiny85 ides - I guess I need to sit down and get the camera rolling! Thanks again, but we're was my bouncing face you promised?! haha

I built the same kit a few weeks ago. Thanks for explaining the adjustment pots... I have many kits left to build. But this one was a fun one. And it worked. The LED Cube is still in the bag. I will do it when you do yours. Thanks for the vids.

I built this same kit some time ago. If you look at the terminal o/p blocks, you will see that they have a 'tongue and groove' on them, and should fit together virtually seamlessly.

I like the idea of the kit as well. I would personally be interested in an SMD version, but i'm sure many people would like a DIP version, either way, i'd love to hear what you think.

I have quite similar thing on the making. What is the best way to connect it to amplifier, so that you can use different waves or is it just restricted to one at the time (without adding some switch circuit on it)?

A good project that would be handy and useful for you is to convert an old ATX pc power supply into a useable bench power supply so you will have a reliable 12v, 5v and 3.3v supply with plenty of current if needed.

Great fun! I also agree with breadboarding the clock on a live stream. Oh, and you should have put your scope in AC coupled mode. :) Thank you for another great video!

A simple function generator, depending on the available frequency range, can also be useful for testing audio circuit designs/speakers to find the behaviour of components at varying frequencies (normally in the 20Hz - 20kHz range) but the kit really needs a display of the generated frequency to be useful for that purpose. The 'mystery' trimpot is possibly there to adjust the Symmetry of the sine wave Edit: just found that this kit is apparently capable of 50Hz-5 kHz so scrub the remark about testing audio circuits...however the chip itself is capable of 0.001Hz to 300kHz output with correct selection of resistors/capacitors.

Using a magnet directly to collect tiny metallic bits is a pain in the arse 'cause you then have to get them off of the magnet once you have collected the shrapnel. Put a neodymium magnet inside a resealable bag (one you can get your hand in at least) and seal it. Then, use the outside of the bag as a mop to collect the bits on the outside of the bag, and when you want to rid it of all the sharp little bits, pull the magnet out from the inside while holding above a bin, and the bits will simply drop off. Put the tip of your index finger (of the hand you are holding the snips with) over the legs as you cut them to prevent them from pinging everywhere. Also, maybe add some Blu-Tac to your wishlist, the stuff you have looks like un-masticated Hubba Bubba gum :p

The kit itself limits the function of the chip significantly. The trim pots don't do enough to alter the duty cycle and amplitude. The slider selector switch changes should cut the frequency choices in half but it doesn't. The only thing this has going for it is its cheap but ultimately useless. You build it, play with it a few times and never use it again.

Or you hack it into something better that uses the chip to its potential.

I've Never used bluetak for any soldering job I just put all the resistors in first then I go for the IC socket if it lies flat on the table you can solder the ic socket in the corners and then check that it is flat to the board as pressing hard fitting the ic can break a pad from the board only then do I solder the ic socket then the taller components must admit the blue tak is helpful when stuff just falls out when you turn the board over !

You should (even if just for your own entertainment) plug it in to some speakers and slowly adjust the duty cycle on the square wave. It makes an excellent noise.

I guess I'm the only Commodore 64 fan here. Would enjoy seeing some programming. I was a self-taught BASIC programmer starting with the VIC-20 and then the C64; it's great fun...well, to me, anyway. I mostly fix old tired Commodore computers nowadays and started posting repair videos on YT recently, as well. Anyway, some old school retro BASIC programming would be a treat. I love your old Gould 400 DSO. Very nice. I haven't seen that model before -- no knobs -- very ahead-of-the-game for its time, I imagine. I was perusing the manual online at goo.gl/zbFZ4V -- it has some interesting features for a 1990's scope. Look into grabbing some USB 5V to 12V boost converters (for example, goo.gl/aAOliz), inexpensive and very handy. They are available in different output voltages and are great for powering little kit projects. Sense8 is high on my Netflix list too; a great show. Haven't watched season 2 yet, or the Christmas special, come to think of it. =\ Enough of me blathering on.

Regarding the overvolting of relays, best not to do it. (although the small amount of difference you're discussing probably would not be a problem) Overvolting contacts can lead to nasty arcing. Overvolting the coil can lead to release of the magic smoke. Also, when using relays with solid state, use a diode, reverse biased across the coil. When the field in the coil collapses, it can actually exceed the applied voltage by many times for a brief instance as it discharges. I'll look up a relay specific vid for you and edit a link in here.Great Scott's video kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZXVgWyNl698mJo it covers inductors in general primarily, but does explain why the diode is needed on motors and relays.

LOL - what is it with English people and Blue Tac and Soldering? Watch at 23.52 - as soon as you flip the board, the 2 pots are held by the workbench that they are sitting on - and GRAVITY holds the PCB down onto them. There is no need for Bluetac - oh, and the legs of the pots have bend in them that retain them in the PCB whilst you rotate it!
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 7 жыл бұрын
The blue tac is mostly to stop the board from sliding around when I apply sideways pressure with the iron. I supports a poor technique.

I had the same prejudice, disdain and distrust against blue tac :) :) I thought it was some sort of merchandising multi-level marketing from Julian and David :) . I suspected BigClive was also onto to the blue tac conspiracy also :) ... until the day it tested it :) ! It changed my life and now I use it every single time I solder some small pcb :)

David, could you please measure the peak voltage and frequency range of the output (seeing as you have a scope)?. I'd like to have something like this, but cheap, that would output at line level to send through a few amplifiers that isn't music - I'll isolate it. This image from Wiki is a decent reference for peak voltage in regards to line level signals, and the page itself will explain more if you're interested. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/46/Line_levels.svg/500px-Line_levels.svg.png If the peak is above 1.7v, just say "nope" Sorry for the many comments, and thank you for the entertainment.
@DavidWatts

The peak voltage was 4.83v on the Squareware, 1.3v on the triangle/saw and 1.1v on the Sine.

I found another function generator kit on Banggood that offers adjustable DC offset and adjustable amplitude (0.1 - 11 VPP) which I think is ideal for my needs. It's more expensive (£7.79) but does have one of those Rubik's acrylic cases and proper plastic knobs (woo!). It could probably benefit from adding proper switches instead of a janky jumper setup for frequency range and waveform though. Link if you fancy a look; www.banggood.com/DIY-Multifunctional-Low-frequency-Signal-Generator-Kit-ICL8038-Signal-Generator-p-1144282.html Thanks again, have a nice lazy Sunday!

Also, no offense intended, stay away from mains power. Get real training in it, or leave it alone. I'd prefer to not miss your videos because you were 6 ft under. Even if you did not fry yourself while working on it, you don't know if the alloy used in the contacts are compatible with your house wiring. The potential being rapid corrosion, leading to heat, which can, and has, caused house fires.
