Long time listener, first time caller! Just want to say I love watching you do your projects. I love that you have no problem saying when you're not sure about something, and 19:54 sums up how I feel powering on anything I have been tinkering with. I'm thankful for power strips/surge protectors for allowing me to power on my projects while standing on the other side of the room. It's not that I don't trust myself... oh wait, I really don't!

Thanks dude, it is very nice to hear from you. I like to make sure you know that I am just like everyone else, not everything goes right, as I am sure you have seen, but I still like to show it all.

This actually worked better than I thought it was going to - I was surprised that RF interference and misc moise didn't swamp out the audio from the project. All in all, it was very interesting and educational, albeit not especially practical for every day use.

Yep, even a little fan fixes the heat issue and then the thing is good to go, even up to ~18-24V :-)

I ordered one of these a few weeks ago. It's currently on the slow boat from China. Great to see what I'm going to be getting. Thanks. I started out by ordering some MASSIVE caps and a bag of big IGBTs, but then thought, no, I'd better build a non-lethal version first.I too have had a good tingle before now - amazing how cautious it makes one from that point on. :D

I saw you on one of the build videos for one of these, never knew you were going to upload. Just found you again while searching for a video about detailed soldering for this while waiting for my kit to ship. Nice video!

Touching the heat sink after it has been running for fifteen minutes hurts worse than the arc it produces I promise. Don't ask about how I know it was a bad night.

This was great your to hard on your self, question when they show pictures of this kit on eBay and other sites they show it with a little chrome ball what is it and what does it do :)

Hi David,I noticed you didn't bother using any thermal grease on the heat sinks. Is it really necessary anyway ?Thanks for the info. Interesting little kit.
@DavidWatts6 жыл бұрын
Paul Thurston if I was going to be running it for long periods then better thermal transfer would be important and thermal paste or grease would be kind of necessary. Generally I like throwing caution to the wind with these kinds of projects :-)
@DavidWatts6 жыл бұрын
Paul Thurston it was too hot to touch in 10 minutes of operation so a fan would likely have more of a positive effect in this scenario.
@paulthurston28836 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. My kit came without the thermal grease and I don't have any handy. Bytheway, Is the power input +Plus or -NEG polarity ? Cheers Paul.
@DavidWatts6 жыл бұрын
As I recall the power supply is centre pole positive. I gave the plasma speaker away so I am afraid that I cannot test that.

David, your soldering iron temperature is FAR too low. Also, because your aren't heating the joint properly you continually feed the solder into the soldering iron tip... You should be heating the joint with the iron, then feeding the solder onto the joint (not the iron).

Wow can you please learn how to solder properly? You show People exactly what you are doing and they think this is the way to solder. Otherwise I really like your Content, so just a good meant tipp.
@DavidWatts7 жыл бұрын
Feel free to educate me (honestly, this isn't me being glib), I am quite honest about my abilities in every video I produce and I am sure you will see my soldering vary wildly from video to video. I can assure you soldering with a tripod and camera 5 inches above and microphone sensitive to the heating element in the iron isn't the most comfortable position to get around the components.
@adremdoccha59847 жыл бұрын
Dööörk Comments like this are not constructive unless you say specifically what is wrong. Perhaps you could elaborate to aid learning, as I find David’s soldering to be good enough, which means I am also doing something wrong according to you.
@johncoops68977 жыл бұрын
The soldering is fine, except the temperature of the iron is way too low, which is why every single joint is painfully slow. That said, the use of BluTac always makes me shake my head, as does the weird order of component placement/soldering which means that Blue Tac is required (since the flat surface of the bench cannot be used to hold the components I place)..
