The artist that was playing on the fanned fretted bass was impressive and from a technical perspective it was a very good performance. Chris Squire was on of the first progressive rock bassist that I really found stood out above many of the other rock bassist along with John Entwistle and Geezer Butler, and Paul McCartney, whom was the first bassist that I knew of, of course none of them utilised the slapping that most of the newer exceptional bassist do, most rock bassist used picks with a few exceptions, like Flea, for example. I play guitar, but I appreciate good bass playing. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨

There’s a huge difference between fast play and playing music. Technical ability is only good when it’s musical!

And yet he always strays away from people who can out perform these "amazing" bass solos. Speed is something that can only be gained when you have the talent to do so. When you can play faster than everyone else and more accurately at that speed, it does make you a better bass player than those that can groove at slow speeds.
@HabuBeemer2 жыл бұрын
@@zombiecharger65 Fast playing can be entertaining but musically it has to make sense. Clapton is an example. He isn't the fastest player out there but his playing comes from the heart and soul and it fits musically with the rest of the band and the song. A flurry of notes up and down a scale isn't always the most pleasing thing to listen to. Technically it's impressive but it can be very sterile.

If done with individual style, as opposed to simply acting as an accompanying instrument, the bass can be the defining sound in music. For reference: Chris Squire John Entwhistle Justin Chancellor Geddy Lee Flea Geezer Butler (on certain albums)

Back in the day, we had a guy playing bass in our band named Dave McElmurry, and many was the time that this guy would play until his fingers literally bled.....there would be tiny flecks of flesh on his bass. He was also left handed, but played a right handed bass, NOT RE-STRUNG....so this rock & roll animal learned to play upside down. One of the best bassists I ever knew.

I'm sure you've probably seen it, but my all time favorite bass sound is when The Who did My Generation on the Smother's Brothers show in 1967 and John Entwistle used that hollow body bass. It had blistering highs and deep lows at the same time. To me that was epic.

I saw Primus in 1994 at Woodstock and Les Claypool was phenomenal and still is to this day. He will always be my #1 because of his playing, his vocals, and his humor on stage between songs. He really plays for the audience and gets off on their reaction.
@VojtechRozsival3 жыл бұрын
Amen. I envy every Primus concert visitor as they do not come to Czech Republic 😭 But it is really hard to pick one here. Even if you narrow it down just to Clypool vs Wooten. (and you would be ignoring a lot others...) Wooten lacks Claypool's sarcasm and overall "frontmanship" (he is usually not the one), but his music feeling is outta this world. (leaving aside the technique, we do not need to talk about it, rite?)

My favourite is les claypool, of course. Because it s not about solo only, it is a fully integrated solo in a song “one better”. Les’s bass is the “main” leading instrument. This fact is a breakthrough of all stereotypes that BASS has supportive or rythm-section role in a band. Unique person.
