I play the guitar solo from "Wish You Were Here" (Pink Floyd) on bass in gigs, because the band I play in has just one guitarist. People have said it sounds really nice on bass, especially fretless.
@nathanwahl922410 ай бұрын
I can almost hear it wit that Mwaaaaaaaa!!!! 3-piece band here, our guitar player does the solo, but besides playing the 'other' guitar part at the beginning, at the end I add some of the orchestral horn notes (bop-bahhh) with tapping the 3rd and 4th strings while playing the bass part with the first two. Ya gotta do that stuff judiciously, but sometimes it really works.

Not true. He actually already lost to guitarists when he tried to play the sweet child o mine solo (which is far more difficult than the free bird solo) . He did do an amazing job for the most part but a couple of parts weren't even close. Like when slash starts to shred davie basically phones it in and stumbles about for a couple of seconds. To davie's credit he plays virtually everything that he possibly can as close as he can. It's just a fact that not everything played on a guitar can be played on bass. But damned if he didn't try. Davie sure is a pro!

@D-Vinko3 жыл бұрын
@@aniximander In what way? It's still a bass. If someone told me I couldn't play bass songs on my saxophone, I'd just grab a baritone sax (usually saxophones sound a few chords lower than written.) If the chords aren't adequately low on the baritone, I can use a bass sax. If not high enough, chances are I can still use a baritone and just play a higher range. All of those are still Saxophones. Bass GUITARS are a form of guitar; they're just the lowest range of guitar available. Are double neck guitars cheating if you're playing a piano song on guitar? Is it cheating to use a 80 key piano when you wanna play a Harp Song? (43 strings plus 7 pedals for use in ANY key.) If the challenge was to do any of those things; and the claim was that you cannot do those things on those instruments; then those are all valid methods of proving that assertion wrong. The entire point of those instruments and variations was because someone would prefer the sound of that instrument, with the pitch to match their song.

@aeromedical67502 жыл бұрын
A lot of people make this same error in their thought process. Yes, the bass is a background instrument. It’s intentionally designed and tuned as to not overpower the lead guitar. That being said, it doesn’t mean that the riffs are any less complex. The fact that he can play these solos on an instrument that’s not designed for it speaks to the level of talent required to play bass at his level.

It is easy to make that assessment about "easy guitar" and yet I've always been impressed by the bass with bands like Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Primus, Stone Temple Pilots, and Duran Duran. Les Claypool really has always stood out to me with changing the image of Bass being a rhythm instrument into it being a lead instrument. The bass in Duran Duran from the Rio album is what inspired me to love the bass even more. It also really depends on the bass guitarist too. When Stevie Ray V would play Jimi Hendrix songs, his bass player would alter the bass sections cause he didn't like how easy and simplistic it all was, especially in Third Stone From The Sun where it was the same few notes over and over for minutes on end.
