Brilliantly filmed Davie! I know that this is an update to another video on dying cdc feathers in the past, and this video did a good job of showing the process in its entirety. I’ve been using the same process since I saw you do this in the older instructional video but I’ve been using a different dye and it happens to be a liquid mix, and I think you have swayed me to move away and to the vineyard powder dyes. A bonus will also be the ability to store them in a better and safer manner as the lady of the house doesn’t like the current method of storage much. Hello Davie Thank you for this sublime video, but being French , and not understanding English , it is quite difficult to understand the details of the explanations . I did not understand what product you use to fix the dye? White vinegar? Or another acid? For other products the video is understandable by all . Hi Davie. Thank you for your KZbin posts, I really enjoy watching them. I was lucky enough to see you tying flies when you were a guest at an exhibition here in Iceland a few years ago. Can you please advise me what colors, and what proportions, I should use to dye the feathers for the Gray Ghost, I don’t like the plain grey color? I believe the right color more to be grey with a violet tint. I have found that I get a violet color by using blue and red. I'm thinking of using grey as the main color and mixing blue and red. Do you think it's better to start with violet and then dye the grey color over it, or vice versa, or would you use other shades from Veniard? I have been dyeing for years and own most of the Venire colors. With kind regards and hope for a piece of good advice.

Hi Jon, I had a great time in Iceland even though I was only there for one day, maybe next time I'll stay a little longer as I had a great time meeting everyone that came along....If I was going try and get a colour like this then I would look at dyeing a natural grey violet rather than dye it grey first as mixing dyes can cause a lots of problems..I hope this is of some help to you.. Davie are you using any textile dye? I have used natural dyes like Tumeric and regular Walmart sold dyes and fly shop dyes which are twice the price of course. Does dying remove the oils in CDC feathers? I use dyed CDC but it never dawned on me until recently. Thanks for everything!!

Hi Kerry, Dyeing does remove the natural oil but I prefer to use a floatant on them even when they are natural as the fly will float far longer and last a few fish before you need to replace it..I have used natural dyes when tying some old patterns to get the right colours although I use Veniard dyes on everything else.. Looks so easy and quick! I was wondering about separating the two colours - if you wished to of course. Perhaps if they all went in to the dye at the same time, then took half out when they reached light cinnamon colour and leave the rest to darken . Could this work?

Hi John, I have done it both ways though with the cinnamon and some of the olives I feel work best just as I have done in the video but I know if I was dyeing a lot more I would come up with a few more really good colours..If you dye your own materials then it would certainly be worth doing as I know for what I have done it will certainly give you the edge when it comes down to tying your own patterns.. Very cool!!!! Question why wouldn’t you take the darker cdc out of the pot before you put the second half in? I’m just thinking of all the separation that needs done after they are dry?? Thanks

Hi Scott, One of the main reasons that I am quite happy to keep the feathers together is that I actually tye the flies using both colours though you could separate them like you said if you wanted to do this..I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. All the very best Davie

Hi Old Smuggler Fly Fishing, I do have glasses on but I don't wear a mask though I do make sure that I have the windows open.. In the past when I dyed large batches of materials I did it outside as it's very easy to get dye all over the kitchen which I have done before and the good lady doesn't like it...I would certainly read the instruction carefully before you start to dye your own materials.. It would be normal white vinegar

Hey Davie , wouldn’t it be easier to separate colors if you drain dark ones out , saving the dye bath and then add the ones you want light colored.

Hi Harry, If you wanted to do this then yes it would work fine though many of the patterns I tye using these feathers have both colours in the dressing so I prefer to keep them together in the same packet..I also do this with a few other colours especially in olives that work really well..Thanks for asking as I am sure many would be thinking this as well..
