That is a beautiful little fly. I have tied the Claret and Mallard before, but never this. I entered a Swap Challenge years ago and I had to tie a Spey fly influenced by a wet fly. I chose the Claret and Mallard because I had magenta in my box. I had to tie a dozen Mallard and Clarets, then a dozen Spey flies based on the trout fly. I have to say it was crazy fun and both my patterns were done well to finish the swap. I always did that Davie, I always joined a swap I could not do, I would actually learn well by watching your videos. One of many things I need to say thank you for!!!

I love the way the hackle pliers lie conveniently on top of the wide LAW jaws while you are ribbing back the palmered hackle. Often, by the time the hackle is wound down to the tail, there's not a lot of slack left and the pliers hang precariously on a tight hackle point...

A sweet looking fly, for sure. I can see 8000 variations, in my mind immediately goes to larger versions as flies for largemouth bass. Thanks, Davie. David Palmetto Fly and Fish

I shoot a fair amount of Mallard. That’s exactly what I do with the bronze feathers that don’t quite make the grade. Nice fly as always.👍

Beautiful fly Davie the bronze side of the mallard is a beautiful colour once dyed. I need to get myself more bronze mallard as I have ran out. But I'm debating whether to buy matched pairs or for a few pound more buy a full mallard skin with wings aswell 🤔🤔
@DavieMcPhail3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, For dyeing I prefer to buy bulk bags which I get from Cookshill, I also buy the matched pairs but I keep them for the Spey flies I tye which need the better feathers....I'm glad you liked the video.. All the very best Davie

Beautiful fly, beautifully tied. The way you married the wing feathers was remarkable, as was tying in both jungle cock eyes at the same time. Maybe in another 40 years, I’ll be able to do that. Hmmm, maybe I won’t tying at 110.

There are still a few brass wing cutters in my inventory of fly tying tools. I used these as a beginner years ago to make sedge wings and others. Would you like to show us the practical use on fly patterns? Instead of historical fly patterns also older fly tying tools?

Fantastic pattern, beautifully tied I do a fair amount of Loch style fishing however I can’t imagine where and in what conditions you would use colours like these?

Brilliant Davie, I love a traditional looking fly like that. See when dying a cape my last one seemed to shrink and do you bleach them first?? Thanks Davie 👏👏
@DavieMcPhail3 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher, No I don't as I prefer to dye from the natural colour of the cape to get the colours I like. I did try bleaching materials many years ago but it didn't work out too well for me..I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie

When I first saw Davie’s videos, he kept mentioning waxing the thread, & I thought he had a peculiar growth his finger & wondered where was the wax he mentioned. ;-)
