Hi Davie, What a beautiful little fly and brilliantly tied, such care to detail as always. The Irish are responsible for some of the most beautiful flies ever devised and of course the controversy of the colour when dying feather and fur. Golden olive has always been a bug with me but I have to admit that the colour defined by TC Kingsmill Moor on seals fur (way back) was "for me" the best ever. There was in actual fact no sparkle to the colour that he defined and all those years ago I was dying my own fur and feather and just about managed the colour he described and forty years on I still use it for my invictas. Anyone wishing to have a great story book on fishing must read A Man May Fish, funny and to the point and a great insight to what once was. Davie, a brilliant tying, great colours but golden olive was going to come up at some point and I would think that is one of the most controversial colours from a bygone age. The colours you put into this little fly are wonderful and there is no detrimental statement being made as everything in fly tying is open to interpretation. Wonderful stuff as usual from the best that the planet can offer. Ali

Hi Ali, It's very kind of you to let me know how much you liked the fly I tyed' I have been tying Irish flies for many years now and I know how complex they can be especially when it comes to colour. I'm sure I have learnt more from them than any other flies I have tyed, that's why I'll never stop learning or get bored tying them..Many thanks again.. All the very best Davie

Hi Davie, I like this tying, Great Fly on the Corrib, works well with a Yellow Sally or Yellow fan wing. Haven't had one in my box in years must put a few together. I like David Wyllie comment and in addition personally i find the biggest challenge is the team of flies to select, which can be a science in itself or the question 1, 2 or 3 droppers. I have been watching your vids for a few years now, and if i dare make a suggestion!! Advise on where to position the fly i.e. point, top or middle dropper and/or suitable flies to fishing with the particular pattern you are tying would be a massive help. from experience i try to find one that works keep it and change out the other 1 or 2, However I also know that for example a Golden olive Bumble, a Claret Bumble and a Raymond are a Lethal Combination, However if the Olive Bumble isn't the top dropper that combination is a lot less successful then again that is only my experience. Would love to hear any thoughts you have on combinations!! All the Best Aidan.

Hi, Davie. First I want to say thank you for all of the great videos and for the clear and thoughtful approach to tying. I've learned so much about making each turn of thread count from watching you. I'm sure you've mentioned this elsewhere, but I can't seem to find it... What kind of wax are you using that you keep on your hand? It seems like such a convenient way to get a little extra grip. Thanks again.

Hey Davie you ever thought of picking out say 12 flies per month that you think would be ideal for the time of year and type of fish you're after , to help beginners understand which to use in a certain situation ? I know it would interest me.

Hi David, I do try and film flies to suit the time of year but it's very easy to get drawn away with the many questions I get from around the world, so I normally go with the flow as they say, but it is a good idea to do this so I will see how it goes...At the moment I am filling some boxes with different flies for a show in America I'm doing so it may have to wait until this is by.. All the very best Davie

Davie, I've been watching our tying videos for the past two months and I'm afraid I've been infected badly. While I don't have a question about this particular video, I figured I'd have a better chance at getting a response if I replied to a new one. In many of your files, you use a partridge feather for legs on nymphs. I have not been able to find anything that resembles what you use. What type of partridge feather do you use for this purpose and if it's pulled from a skin, where do you pull from? I've looked at several hungarian partridge backs and have no idea what I'm looking at. Also, you also mentioned using seal's fur dubbing on another nymph pattern. Is that for real or a synthetic. Again, I've had no luck finding that stuff either. Love your videos!

Hi Daniel, The Hungarian Partridge is perfect for tying nymphs and many other flies, the brown feathers run along it's back from it's neck to it's tail and the smallest feathers being nearest the head,. The grey partridge feathers are on the underside of the bird, these are also very useful feathers which can be used in their natural colour as well can be dyed to suit the flies you want to tye..You can still buy seals fur but there's many good substitutes for this and most are synthetic like SLF which comes from a company called Wapsi..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie..

A wet fly, but surely these would float nicely, given the hackles and the dubbing? Great fly to fish in a wave...
