As an avid amateur fly tier I have to say that countless lunch hrs have been spent watching your fly tying videos. Insanely well thought trough and ridiculously educational! By far the best videos concerning fly tying I have found on the web. Hail Davie McPhail! Lord of the Flies!

Davie, I know you did this one a while ago but it certainly is an inspiring fly. Thanks for the instruction, I will see if I can get one to look just a little close to your masterful rendition.

Stunning design. Will take me quite a few attempts to come even close to this but this is definitely one I want to have in my box.

One of your best! I have discovered a dubbing that everyone else probably knows about, Hareline Ice Dub UV, in tan. This stuff glows and creates a hallow effect when wet and dubs onto the thread like a dream.

hi davie can i ask where you buy most of your hooks and materials? i usually buy from glasgow angling centre but the range of materials isnt as big as youd expect for it being a fishing megastore
@DavieMcPhail6 жыл бұрын
Hi Screaming Reels, Most of my hooks come from Fulling Mill now though I will buy Partridge, Loop and Kamasan when I need them..Sean Stanton, Pat Nolan's Premier Angling in Ireland, Cookshill, Lathkill, Anglers Boutique and as I used to work in the GAC I did buy a lot of materials from them over the years as I do prefer to pick my capes if I can...I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie...

+Davie McPhail cheers davie mate just started tying flies myself im from the north east of scotland in aberdeenshire. i spend alot of my time wathing your videos so thanks for educating me on alot of great patterns.
@scopez47156 жыл бұрын
I usually buy Fulling mill hooks as they are very strong and reliable, as for kamasan i havent really used much of their hooks except the kamasan B110 as they are great sturdy hooks for buzzers

A+ Just what i was looking for a Great Daddy to tie next, (and with-out buying them over priced plastic wings) Only started tying a few weeks ago starting with your teal-blue, went ok until i had a memory block with the whip finish tool and things fell apart, Managed to finish it though!! just ended up with a bigger deformed head, but after a few good tips from the good people on here and a lot of practice i'm getting better. Sry for the waffle but i always seem to end up coming back and tying your flies, its because your videos are so easy to follow for a beginner and the added full list of items below the video is a god-sent. Big Thx Again Pb

I will be tying plenty of these!!!! They imitate the large female Mosquitos we have flying around in Carolina. Davie, do you use a closed cell foam for this fly? Also you can lay hackle like on one I've ever seen. Most of my dry flies are wulff patterns to hold nymph droppers and it takes me twice as many wraps to get the same tying of hackling as your flying. I use mostly whiting silver saddles.

Great im going to tie shortly.One question what size in length is the foam body? PD
@DavieMcPhail7 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, On average I would say the body is about an inch long but I tye them shorter as well and they still work... All the very best Davie

I wonder what are the hook up ratio for detached body flies. they look neat but can they hook the fish when you need them to.
@DavieMcPhail8 жыл бұрын
Hi madara uchiha, I would say the hook ratio is about 50/50 but I feel you will get a lot more offers with these flies at times so this will compensate for this..Using the wide gape hooks will also help..I would recommend allowing the fish to turn away with the fly before you strike if you can. I first started using detached bodied flies on the river and I found that I hooked a lot more fish on them. I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie

Hi Davie, Great videos, I'm a big fan and have learnt pretty much everything I know from watching your channel - keep it up! I'm going to have a go at tying a daddy pattern similar to this, but I have no idea what hackle to buy for the wings. Up to now I haven't used any hackle in my tying. I buy most of my materials online, what should I search for? Thanks, Steve
@DavieMcPhail8 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I have attached links to the type of feathers that you could use to tye these flies. The saddles are perfect for doing them though they are more expensive but you could buy strung hackles which are very good as well and a lot cheaper..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and that they have helped you with your flies and thank you for the kind words.... Hi Davie Thanks for all the videos, yer a grand teacher. I had it in mind that you had done a video with segmented bodies made from foam cylinders but I can't find it now. Was it yourself or am I remembering wrong? Andy

Is it this one that you are looking for Andy? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eF7Xlnt5otCKh8U
@bobaggary Жыл бұрын
@@DavieMcPhail It wasn't Davie. It was a segmented body. I think it was tied with the whole cylinder on a needle. It may not have been yourself though. It was a couple of years ago now that I watched it. I think it may even have been just about tying the bodies and not an actual fly.

Next year I'm planning on trying to catch as many coarse species on a dry fly as I can, just to see if it can be done. I think terrestrials are probably going to be my best bet, so I reckon that this pattern and your detached body hawthorn fly are going to be just the job. I've already tied a few ant patterns and I'm keeping my eyes peeled for any more suitable flies. Thanks for your excellent clear video instructions, Davie...I've learnt a great deal in my short fly tying career. Now all I've got to do is catch a few fish! Kind regards David

Hi Davie, I seem to remember a daddy you tied a long time ago that seems to be missing from the channel now. It was a brute of a fly with some sort of hair for the legs. Good in a big wave style. Might you still have that? Atb.
@DavieMcPhail7 жыл бұрын
Hi Labeilofest, Sorry about the delay in getting back to you as I have been away. I know the fly you are talking about but I must have deleted it many years ago as I did a search and it's not there so it must have been on my original channel..Keep me in mind and I will film another as like you said it's a great fly in a big wave...I used Mouse main for legs.. All the very best Davie
