You know, it is pretty amazing that with a free app you can do something that is pretty similar to an app that is much older, and is very costly. Awesome job - these new functionalities and features in Gimp are very impressive.
@lawrencedoliveiro91044 жыл бұрын
Not really so amazing. Just goes to show how Adobe has completely destroyed its own incentives to keep improving its products since it forced all its users onto a model where they have to keep paying, regardless.

Photoshop is only 6 years older, being created in 1990, with the GIMP logically being from 1996.
@cjoth2 жыл бұрын
@@LaZZeYT almost 6 years older. Photoshop 1.0 was on Feb 19, 1990, while GIMP was on Nov 21, 1995 ;) (unless sumbody changed the Wikipedia xD but i doubt they wud do so for these sort of things)

@@pecintakebenaran2147 because it is unneeded and they are pushed as the only and best way to do anything which would be fine if it were free and for the benefit of all, but when it's financially motivated in order to make it seem like it's the only way and the must have, sorry but it's not and I don't want it, many people are forced to use it, not because it's the best but because they are forced to use it in a system that is not about creative persuit but in fact to continue the relationship between money and worth.

I think with both you're able to get the same results at some point, however with Photoshop, due to the algorithms, you can do it faster. Of course, this comment is only valid for a couple of months, because who knows, maybe Gimp can go over Photoshop in some years, considering the improvement Gimp has had.
@oldi1844 жыл бұрын
For many many years Gimp development was in stagnation. Version 2.8 was released in 2012. Version 2.10 in...2018!!! I am glad they picked up some speed. Krita which is another really good and free raster editor started many years later and they developed faster than Gimp because they went for crowd funding on kickstarter. Krita has non-destructive layers and masks and full CMYK support. I think Gimp team should do the same. There are 1000s of people that will willingly throw some buck through crowdfunding. When team will add CMYK support in the program GIMP will gain huge boost in popularity. Another really huge problem with GIMP is that Windows version is really behind(performance and stability) the Linux version. Because the core team program only on linux and windows version is only a port from linux. Not to mention Mac version which is even deeper behind windows. The thing is that mainstream - people and companies etc. do not use Linux for professional work. Most artists and firms which create art and graphics etc work on Windows or Mac. Sure Linux system is widely used in professional work also but in science - math, calculations, governments are using this system for example European Union etc. But these institutions have little in common with graphic creation. This is the main problem with Gimp. They should use kickstarter and focus more on Windows and Mac in this way more and more people will notice Gimp and they will start using it.

I'm in awe of what you do Michael. Just shows what the mind can do with the tools available . Quick question. Could you do a tutorial on digital collages. An example is an erased head with some cool geometric shapes projecting or a vertical rainbow shooting out of the "head". Not sure if that makes sense but thank you for your tutorials.

I also watch Gimp path tool to remove background too. Question is when is best time use background selection, path tool? My actual purpose is to diecut for stock photography.
Great video! I'm impressed with the results and your ability to do this so quickly! I do have a question about the PhotoShop image. I noticed some red in the hair, of the model, above her right eye (her left eye from the viewers perspective). Is that red part of the selection mask that needed to be removed? Thanks for posting!
@DaviesMediaDesign4 жыл бұрын
Yes - that was a spot that was transparent that needed to be fixed. I actually pointed it out in the original edit, but I took too much personal responsibility for the mistake (which I ultimately decided was a mistake made by the Photoshop algorithm) so I removed me taking blame from the final video.
@Ck87JF4 жыл бұрын
I noticed the same thing, but honestly on a 90 second rush, it's certainly forgiveable that you missed it, so no "blame" necessary. Thanks for the video!

Very nice comparison both tools did very well considering the time constraints. GIMP has come a long way very impressive tool. Sadly until it has adjustment layers it is a no go for me. I just don't appreciate having to redo multiple edits due to needing to tweak something a few layers down while editing my photos.

The feature you used in Gimp for this, has it been around long? I've used Gimp for years, though I unfortunately never really took the time to learn the full power of what it has to offer. Cutting out backgrounds manually with the lasso and eraser is a major pain! Do you have a video that goes over the how-to at a little more relaxed of a pace? Also, with Photoshop, did you just click the girl (after choosing whatever tool) and Photoshop figured out her entire outline nearly instantly and perfectly? It was hard to follow your mouse sometimes, but you didn't draw around her like you did in Gimp.

The foreground select tool was officially released in 2012, though I’ve seen it referenced as early as late 2011. Yes, Photoshop tries to auto-detect the foreground - it only works in cases like the one shown in the video where there is lots of contrast between foreground and background. I have a tutorial linked in description.

It's ok. You won't get cooties from a picture of a beautiful woman. If the model in this video offends you, I hate to think what the rest of the internet is doing to you. Maybe a safe space and a good book is a better fit for you.

@@stephenbishop8671 :) I actually like your comment. Indeed I shield myself from a large part of the internet, oh yes indeed. I'm not offended by a picture of a beautiful woman; it is the morals I put questionmarks to. Objectifying women has been and still is a horror and should be stopped.

Unnecessary time challenges... it's everywhere on dumb TV shows and I guess, youtube vids. Why 90 seconds? Why not 2 minutes? Why not just time how long each took you to complete the task?
