You know, one of my favorite parts of the Ibushi theme is actually the part you referred to as a "fake build-up", where it sounds like something big is coming, but the volume and intensity of everything heard dims down. One thing I've learned in music over the years, is that low intensity, and even silence, if used correctly, can be considered just as powerful as a huge crash of instruments. Tasteful choices make for incredible compositions.

It's my headcanon that Narwa killing Ibushi and becoming the Allmother wasn't done lightly, and that it actually tore her apart and broke her heart to do it. A lot of Thanos quotes would fit really well with this interpretation: "This day extracts a heavy toll." "The hardest choices require the strongest wills." "What did it cost?" "...Everything."

9:13 I normally don't like this part because it's the end to an otherwise great chorus. However, lore analysis wise, it's a great line. Ibushi's theme is a story of his frustration between the anger and sorrow, becoming more and more agitated until finally: He's sick of it. Ibushi is Done. Finished. Resolved. Centered. Focused. He isn't going to bounce back and forth between his emotions. He isn't going to explain himself or plead his case any further. You're speaking with the Breath of Ire, now, and it's like trying to negotiate with a Hurricane. Which is fitting because Ibushi's job during the rampage is chasing all the other monster's away and-as far as he's concerned-we're the problem. So really, that last line is an especial *Fuck You* to the player, stronghold, and Kamura Village who are preventing him from creating _True Paradise._

Adding a second comment separate from my question: that was a really good catch with the dropped thirds at the end, it is really masterful that the composer used the lack of emotion to convey the lifeless husk of Ibushi. In general the entire fight with Ibushi - Narwa - Allmother is really great but that extra level of storytelling baked into the themes is amazing! Very excited for the follow-ups to this video

Incredible analysis! Each and every one of your videos are an inspiration. I love the in depth knowledge that they provide and the thoughtful analyses on the MH soundtracks. It also warms my heart to see fellow Brazilian Monster Hunter fun’s. Both your Ibushi and Narwa analyses were absolutely phenomenal. I absolutely cannot wait for the coming analyzation of the Allmother OST. I am sure that you may have caught this already, but one thing I noticed about the Ibushi and Allmother Narwa themes share the *exact* same melody from 1:03-1:25 (Ibushi) and 1:33-1:60 (Allmother). Of course there is a slight different in background instruments, but otherwise, they are exactly the same in terms of tune and chords. I thought that it would be an interesting pattern to touch upon in your Allmother Narwa video.

2:00 You've explained very well what I couldn't describe from the BGM. From your explanation I think that ambiguous part is the composer's brilliance: They managed to crystallize various emotions and thoughts into a chord, invoking our inner understanding through feelings rather than cognition. Its primal and perhaps foreign to our modernized way of thinking, yet elegant and we can deeply empathize with. 3:38 You certainly are a bona fide game composer, I farmed narwa till I'm braindead and I didn't recognize the similarity 5:54 This theme is so sad * *paused at the perfect time before Impact Crater hit the lover* * XD 7:01 Wow. This explanation just made me appreciate this theme a whole bunch more. Never thought that both songs could be envisioned as a separated duet, makes it sadder when you think about the theme left it on purpose waiting for the other part to reunite. Overall, amazing decomposition of a majestic piece. Always enjoyed your videos when you splendidly explained each meaning from the audible and (usually) inaudible parts and instruments. Btw, after Rise, are you interested in analyzing Old MH themes? especially MH4 opening theme or MH Tri's Main Theme, I think the music themselves is already movie-worthy stories to tell just from the composition. Also maybe Alatreon, the bold tempo change is very interesting to the ears, painting "instability" theme to the fight.
@Typi
@Typi 3 жыл бұрын
I love the Sepernt's themes; especially the AllMother theme. It sounds very desperate, representing the situation both the Hunter and Narwa are in (Hunters trying to stop the serpents from mating, while Narwa desperately trying to keep her future kin safe, and to make sure Ibushi's death wouldnt be for nothing). Especially when the main melody hits. I loved it in Breath of Ire, but it felt truly complete in Allmother's theme, and fit the story perfectly.

You are correct in thinking Hinoa is singing Ibushi's theme, and likewise, Minoto is singing Narwa's theme. On the official soundtrack there are even Japanese versions of these songs that have actual translations for what's being said, though I can't remember what they are off memory.

Really liking your MH Music videos! One super cool musical experience I had in Monster Hunter World was the 3 separate themes from Kulve Taroth as you got into her different phases during your pursuit of her into the golden depths each song builds in intensity just like Kulve Taroth herself during the fight. First the music is epic and adventurous matching the hunter spirit as you enter her domain and start the hunt while KT is still laden down with her golden coat and is largely uninterested with the hunters attempting to annoy her. Second phase, she retreats, and starts direct combat and the intensity goes up, and finally with her back against the wall, and her golden coat destroyed, she goes all out, with the music getting super intense and the start of the song is scary. Its definitely something to see and experience especially with her dramatic initial roar during the start of 3rd phase is synced with the music transition from 2nd song to 3rd song. Her roar couple with an epic piano part really clinch this epic moment of "Now you're in MY HOUSE" and its about to hit the fan.

It’s worth noting at 8:24 you mentioned the whole orchestra comes in to back up the vocals. Well the actual vocals say “Come together” which can be seen as one of two things, either it means ibushi being together with Narwa, or since the orchestra all jumps after a buildup it could mean ibushi is riling up monsters and when the orchestra jumps in it’s a rampage starting since it’s his anger that causes everything nearby to rampage. Either way it’s very good story telling through small music details

8:17 Hey Davi, I think you unintentionally found another sign to Ibushi's madness when you pointed out his flute in the left speaker. In real life, our ears are a core part of our sense of balance. If you were to build up a lot of ear wax it could disrupt you and cause imbalance. In game, it is stated that there's is honestly no real reason for Ibushi to float upside down. That it offers him no specific advantages he otherwise wouldn't have when right side up. The only thing that I personally could imagine is that he naturally chooses to put his head as close to us because he doesn't suffer from vertigo and wants to inspect us. But the important thing is that while he doesn't suffer from imbalance, us humans can and do. And while Ibushi might not recognize that he himself is a little unhinged, the fact that we can pick up his flute in only one ear is translating how imbalanced Ibushi is himself. Extra points for the fact that the instrument is almost being drowned out by the rest of the music at this point.

I'm not that good at analyzing a song myself, but listening to you it really comes together. Duet without the other person, crying out in loneliness, to silence and the numb pain of it all, but a final flute.... like a whisper, to keep going, all accompanied by pounding angry percussion. I really like these videos. I know you want to tackle Narwa and All mother Narwa, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on Magnamalos' theme too. A tense moment, as the villagers are trying to go about their lives, pretending not to worry about Squirt. Hinoa jerks mid-dango eating and begins singing the vocals, seemingly in a trance. The villagers are shocked and terrified as A: her eyes are glowing blue and B: she's Hinoa. Hinoa does _not_ waste dango, much less stop eating it.

Yeah what you said lines up with what I felt from the song. It really has this feel of grandness,and epicness cause Sky Serpent and that whole devine feel,but also longing and urgency. And considering how some atempts to translate the Japanese version,which yes we do have versions of the songs with Japanese lyrics for all the songs with singing in the game and generally what most translations say is that he wants to destroy the village and he will stop at nothing to get where he is going

*MH Lore: Wind Serpent Ibushi* "Name: Wind Serpent Ibushi (イブシマキヒコ) Title: Wind God Dragon (風神龍)/Breath of Ire/Serpent God of Wind Length: 3068.8cm Height: 1263.82cm Order: Elder Dragon Suborder: Deity Dragon Family: Unknown Habitats: Unknown" "Bring down your rage upon the firmament and engulf all." "Encompass all in a storm of chaos, and let none escape." "Unleash an incarnation of pure terror that none can resist." "Chase the living as the embodiment of ruin." "Wreak ultimate calamity unto this plane." "The Rampage has been plaguing the Kamura Region since ancient times, and no one could ever guess why hordes of monsters would start attacking villages. Some had speculated that Magnamalo was the cause of the Rampage, but there was no indication that it could make so many monsters flee at once. Something else was hiding behind the Rampage..." "Sometime later, fifty years after the last calamity that befell Kamura, there are signs of another Rampage approaching. The people of Kamura, including a hunter known as the "Fierce," prepare to face this mysterious phenomon once again." "Not long after the Rampage begins, the Fierce takes down Magnamalo and helps the village overcome numerous monster hordes, including ones led by Apex Monsters. With the help of the Fierce, Kamura Village is able to push back the rampaging monsters." ""How long will the Rampage last?" "Why does it keep occurring every few decades?" "Is this just nature at work or something supernatural?"" "One day, not long after a monster horde led by an Apex Arzuros is repelled, a mysterious blue monster suddenly appears in the sky and resonates with Hinoa. Where is my queen? Where is my queen?"" "While the monster has never been witnessed before, it's thought to be some kind of elder dragon. After its sudden appearance, the Guild begins a full investigation. Soon they find an answer and conclude that this monster is not only connected to the Rampage but is also the cause of it. This monster is known as Wind Serpent Ibushi, the Wind God Dragon." "An elder dragon that soars through the sky as if it was swimming through the sea, Wind Serpent Ibushi can be identified by its blue shell and massive horns." "This male elder dragon's exact habitat range is unknown, but he has been reported in various locales during Rampages. He has long been a part of the region's history, but no one knew of his existence until recently." "In the past, there was a civilization living within the Shrine Ruins. The Shrine Ruins was previously inhabited by gods (monsters), but a divine lightning (Thunder Serpent Narwa) scared away the gods, making it the perfect place for humans to inhabit." "A few decades later, wicked gales (Wind Serpent Ibushi) swept across the Shrine Ruins, bringing gods back to the land that the humans now claimed. The gods scared away the humans, and nature once again nurtured the tainted land." "This legend has been passed down in Kamura Village for many years, and sadly Kamura Village, as well as other villages, got to experience this legend firsthand for hundreds of years." "Divine lightning and wicked gales swept across the land, bringing numerous gods and a hellfire beast (Magnamalo) to Kamura Village." "Wind Serpent Ibushi is an unusual elder dragon with some bizarre adaptations. From a distance, he looks like a "flying seahorse" (Conceptually, that's what they were going with)." "His body is covered in thick, highly elastic skin that is rigid enough to repel blades yet flexible like rubber. Ibushi needs this kind of skin due to the several gills found on his body that he uses for flight." "Ibushi's gills are called "windsacs", and he uses them to produce and store a special gas that's lighter than air. He'll expel this gas (Air/Wind) from his windsacs to create sparkling updrafts that he'll use to help him float or fly in the sky." " The windsacs inflate when they're filled with gas but deflate when they expel it. While "swimming" through the sky, Ibushi looks like a leviathan or some kind of god. Reference: mythopedia.com/topics/fujin " "Ibushi spends much of his time in the air, likely the reason why he wasn't discovered until recently. Like other elder dragons, Ibushi is rarely ever seen, but that changes during the mating season (Which seems to occur every fifty years or so)." "Not long after he was discovered, his female counterpart, Thunder Serpent Narwa, was found as well. During the mating season, Narwa will choose a place to nest, and Ibushi will search for her nesting spot in order to mate with her." "He will fly through numerous locales in search of her, tearing apart the land as he searches for his "queen" (Obviously, there is more than one Ibushi and Narwa since they are a species. If our Ibushi looked hard enough, he probably would've eventually found another Narwa)." "Once Ibushi finds Narwa, a storm of wind and lightning will occur as they converge (That's their beautiful yet very destructive mating ritual). Once they mate, Ibushi will fly around and guard the nest, much like Rathalos, while Narwa hides in her nest and prepares to lay eggs." "Wind Serpent Ibushi and Thunder Serpent Narwa are the source of the Rampage, particularly Ibushi. As Ibushi goes to various locales in search of Narwa, he'll rip apart the land with his powerful gales, which can best be described as a hurricane (Breath of Ire)." "Ibushi's storm, as well as his echoing roar, will cause numerous monsters to flee into other areas, including villages. In reality, the Rampage is a mass migration caused by Ibushi as he looks for Narwa and the Apex Monsters are some of Ibushi's victims. While most monsters were able to escape Ibushi's storm, some of them weren't so lucky. Some of the monsters caught in Ibushi's storm managed to survive, growing stronger and becoming more aggressive after the experience. Apex Monsters now greatly fear storms and will tear through just about anything to avoid them, and other monsters can sense their raw rage and desperation." "As mentioned previously, Ibushi is capable of expelling that special gas from his windsacs. He'll often fire that gas (Draconic Wind) from his forelimbs and tail. The gas also violently circulates throughout his body, meaning he can breathe the draconic wind from his mouth as well. When the gas is compressed, Ibushi can even breathe a draconic wind beam." "Ibushi's gales are extremely powerful, capable of destroying much of the equipment in the Red Stronghold in an instant. The gales are shot out of his windsacs with tremendous force comparable to a cannon, making them quite deadly to get hit by." "When enraged, Ibushi's eyes and windsacs will glow red, indicating his immense rage. When faced with a threat, or gate, that he can't destroy, he'll use the gas around him to lift up several boulders. He'll use the currents generated by the gas to fire the boulders at targets." "With the help of his windsacs, Ibushi can freely fly wherever want he wants and attack however he wants. However, he needs to make sure each one of his windsacs is filled with enough gas. The windsacs are very delicate organs that can easily be damaged. If too many of them are deflated in battle, Ibushi will helplessly fall to the ground, leaving him open to attacks." "Noticeably, Ibushi has a second pair of jaws inside of his mouth. While his diet is unknown, he can potentially use those jaws to hold onto prey items. His skin is oddly hard, elastic, and lightweight." "Countless rock-hard spikes can be found on his skin, which he uses for protection against airborne threats. One swipe from his pointy claw disfigured the land with a gust-like blow. The Wind Serpent Orb shimmers with the rage of a typhoon, allowing its user to command storms." "A destructive deluge, heaven-sent, offering no possibility of salvation." "An atrocious maelstrom doling out a bitter end to all it swallows." "Manifest the horrors of the universe to make others quake with fear." "The embodiment of death for all living things. Its presence brings naught but despair." "The demise of the world ventures closer, an inescapable end." " Sources: 1. At some parts the theme rises and sounds similar to valstrax but doesn't give the same sense of taking flight like you get with valstrax. I hadn't heard this theme before, not having played the game, but aside from the specific things you mentioned here, the failed duet and the calling of Narwa's theme and the most interesting part of all, the chords without thirds which is a super interesting concept that I'll take away, aside from those what I heard in this I didn't find all that interesting. It's a very effective theme, but to my unmusical ears, the only thing in this theme that actually makes it retain in me is that failed duet creating a sense of awkwardness in the gaps. It creates a sense of sadness, and lonely incompletion, but, and it might just be me missing context of the game, that's all I get. It could be cut and paste into a Fire Emblem game or Nier. The specifics that relate to Ibushi are too nuanced, too much in the technical, as opposed to cuffing me over the head like most other themes. I'll probably remember that Ibushi's theme sounds sad and that one gimmick, but I won't take away the hook or motif or whatever it's called. The bit that you hum. That's just my own take on hearing the song.
