Today we are listening to Armored Core music for the first time! I've listened to A LOT of From Soft music, but somehow I missed out on Armored Core, until now. This particular track is called Someone Is Always Moving on the Surface and i's from the game Armored Core For Answer.

There aren't terribly many missions in space in For Answer. You can choose to go with a certain shady pilot, who just wants to blow up a bunch of civilian ark ships in low-orbit. Of course, going this route gets you arguably the hardest mission in the game.

Never clicked on a notification so fast in my life. So glad you are finally getting to Armored Core music! Here is a bit of context for Armored Core: Generation 4 Armored Core is my personal favorite soundtrack-wise (where this song is from). But there are various other great tracks to choose from! Armored Core, you play as a mercenary in a post-apocalyptic world, working for various corporations in their own corporate warfare and espionage. You aren't a hero, you aren't a villain. You are an elite mercenary fighting for your next paycheck. You might be hired to help someone one day then hired to betray them the next. In Armored Core 4/For Answer specifically, much of humanity has been forced to live underground or in flying shelters called "Cradles." "Someone is always moving on the surface" tells of the fact that, no matter how ruined the world is, or how bad the fighting gets, humanity will always persevere and survive even in a ruined world. I hope you end up finding more AC songs you end up enjoying! Really glad you are getting into another Fromsoft game's soundtrack.

It is crazy how vast and diverse the Armored Core series' music is. 6 is the only one I've actually played, but watching and learning so much about the old ones has been a fascinating dive. 6 in particular goes hard on the bleak sci-fi setting that translates into the music as well. With a lot of somber, dark and scary, or outright frantic electronica sounds to its music.

When it comes to the piano, I see less 'chaos' and more chaotic organization. Every thing sticks to such a strict formula for most of the track. It's the foundation. And as time passes, a new foundation settles. And eventually cracks begin to show once again. I see a bit of a cycle, not desperation.

Armored Core 4 Answers is very much about the end of a conflict which most major events happened in Armored Core 4. It's the last frantic run toward getting the best ending possible, the best answer to the impossible situation presented to the player when the game starts. So the lonely piano just keeping up the same loop, over and over and over; always going forward and never slowing down or repeating, is very fitting of how the game goes. Always taking a new mission, keeping it up, just doing your job and trying to make the most of this world, until you start learning more about the conflicts and the players in it (which would be the different cords and emotions making the scope greater) as you advance the story and make your choices locking you in different paths. Of course, the track cannot end here, it's only the title screen, to get an end to it, you need to reach one in the game, there you do pick an answer to the question asked here: What is at the end of the journey ? (the game isn't subtle about it btw, the last line spoken in most endings by your handler is: "Is that your Answer ?")

One of my favorite Armored Core tracks. 4 Answer is, like most of the series, set in a very bleak dystopian world that showcases the worst of humanity, greed and industry. The overarching theme of 4 Answer is that no matter how you answer the question of how to live there is going to be consequences for other people. Good, bad, you can't save everybody and sometimes you can't save anybody. But you need to give any answer at all to proceed. Out of all the series I think it is probably the most emotional, simultaneously the most inspiring and depressing thing. Not even Armored Core 6 can come close even though it also touches on these themes more than the other installments.

Things like Nineball's theme and the stuff from For Answer are fun and all, but not enough people recommend many of the PS1-PS2 era OST tracks. Rise in Arms, Complete Physical, Shape Memory Alloys, Clash on my Enemy, The Encounter World... There's a ton of cool bangers from past games that barely anyone ever recommends.

i think this music fits armored core for answer very well even though it only indirectly has something to do with space, the game's themes are primarily about the preservation of life under strict rules versus the freedom of choice and the chaos that might come with it, it is about fighting for what you stand for and think is right and i see this piece as something that would play when one side stands victorious in the end of the conflict, reminiscing about everything it took to get there, while a sudden wave of relief washes your past worries away, a new future awaits

This track is from later on in the timeline. Due to events from past games, earth's surface a barren, sand swept wasteland, devoid of all life, polluted and irradiated, with the only things to break the bare monotony being the ruined, abandoned husks of buildings from cities long dead, and the occasional battles of the remaining corporations, powered by massive, supersonic war machines darting about through the sky, their pilots ever modifying, ever tweaking in an effort to be just a little faster, just a little stronger, just a little tougher, to fight for their cause and win in a war with no end. But anything worth fighting for from our perspective seems to already be dead: humanity lives in bunkers and skyships, sealed away from or soaring above the horribly polluted surface, that lifeless wasteland that used to be home.
@ibysdagon4659
@ibysdagon4659 3 ай бұрын
Actually it's just the events of 4. Apparently having a global war primarily using war machines that leak super radiation fight each other isn't good for the planet. But the AC timelines are weird. 3 was a reboot. I heard Nexus was a new one but not sure and you can make a case for 4-5 both being connected and not connected depending on your pov.
@fusioncell7669
@fusioncell7669 Ай бұрын
@@ibysdagon4659 3rd gen is split into early and late entries, with AC3 and Silent Line being early 3rd gen and Nexus and Last Raven being late 3rd gen. This is primarily due to changes made to mechanics as well as the introduction of a dual analogue control scheme in Nexus onwards. All the parts that reappeard in late 3rd gen that came from early 3rd gen were also renamed. It's also all but confirmed that 4th and 5th gens are connected, especially with information from one of the books I believe. Even without that though there's more than enough clues in 5th gen, particularly in Verdict Day.
@ibysdagon4659
@ibysdagon4659 Ай бұрын
@@fusioncell7669 yeah honestly I feel like white Glint and spirit of motherwill showing up in vd are pretty clear indications that 5 gen is continuing 4 gens story but there is so much discord about that and even the wiki says it's just Easter eggs so I guess it's believe what you want. Plot wise it's kind of odd with 3rg gen. If you relate Silent line to nexus, it's kind of redundant and contradictory. But Nine breaker is kind of worst for the narrative being sandwiched between Nexus and last raven although I guess none breaker really doesn't have a plot and sucks so meh.

With conext this is pretty, well hopefully depressing if that makes sense. Even the name. So it's a sequal to AC 4. Your a pilot of an Armored Core NEXT called a Lynx. In the past game, there was this massive war where all the players hired Lynx pilots to fight for them. Issue being NEXT emmit radiaton when in combat and the Earth was poisoned because of it. Humanity escaped to floating cities called Cradles but the Lynx were deemed to dangerous to be allowed in and were banished to the poisoned Earth. But the corperation still need pilots to continue their wars so the work of the Lynx continues. Earth is desolate but there is someone always moving on the surface.

I highly recommend you DON'T start from the beginning of Armored Core. You should definitely start with AC 4, 4A, or 6. The older Armored Core games are good for sure, but are NOT intuitive and are VERY difficult to get into. Play some of the "newer" games FIRST, and then if you feel like you're digging the games, THEN go back to the older games and feel the struggle.

@@lesslighter I would argue thats still not an easy ingress into the AC series. Pretty much anything older than 4 is very archaic and is very difficult to play and understand. They simply aren't as intuitive the farther (back) in the series you go. I'm not saying they aren't worthwhile experiences, but I simply don't think they're the best starting point for anyone getting into the series. They're more likely to turn someone away. There is a reason the AC games were niche and despite AC6s success and good faith they've (From Software) built with the souls series, AC is STILL niche.

@@Ptollemios eh I'd argue that due to the nature of AC4 people won't learn good old school energy management which is important in the old generation games besides clunky controls especially if you adivise on them using energy weapons since energy weapons dont cost anything before AC4 but drains your generator which is important to know considering you will be using these techniques for a good set of 10 games, considering theses been like 5 titles since AC4 out of 16 yes yes granted using Hokushi or even VP-20D in AC6 is already testing how good you are with "old school" EN management
@Ptollemios
@Ptollemios 3 ай бұрын
@@lesslighter you could learn good energy management in any of the games. They all require it to varying degrees. I would understand your point of it was something like comparing Sekiro to Dark Souls. One has a stagger system but no stamina, whereas the other has stamina and requires careful management of it. However all AC games require you to manage energy, so energy management could be learned in any of the games.

This is one of my favorite tracks from the 4th Gen which are called NEXT's instead of Armored Cores at this point in the series. This potrays a variety of things, but the two main ones i take from this song are that it's a song of both hope and tragedy. Hope in that humanity will survive and thrive in it's own way potrayed by the piano but as time goes on with the strings and the choir show that humanity will have to come to its harsh reality that those who are thriving will have to face their harsh reality of those always on the surface which is polluted and destroyed from years of NEXT's fighting each other and their shields causing contamination of the world and land And something interesting i heard someone say that the piano notes are thoughts and the base is a heartbeat

Here's my take on it, as someone who knows nothing about music itself and very little about armored core The fast, frantic, yet graceful piano is much like machines fighting. Constant, unwavering, flowing and desperate, yet without emotion Then there is the 2 hit bassy sounds, a heartbeat. It is faint, alone in a sea of robotic war, yet determined to persist The second layer of separate piano is a new, different fight, being done by a machine, yet distinct, fighting against everything else, but not competing Then there is the voice like sounds at the end, acting as a light at the end of a tunnel, as hope Might be pushing it a bit in a few cases but it's how my over analyzing brain sees things

2:01 A big plot point of For Answer is that in the time between Armored Core 4 and For Answer, the Earth became so polluted/radiated that outside of small pockets, it's nearly impossible for humanity to survive on the surface, and so most of the Earths population has taken to the Mesosphere in massive colonies called Cradles. However, there are still resources on the surface, and several corporations still have manufacturing plants down there. Soldiers and pilots and Lynx(mecha pilots) are always fighting on the surface, hence the name of the track "Somebody is always moving on the surface." Spoilers below: The three endings to For Answer all have to do with the fate of the Cradles, with the most morally white option being the one that dooms humanity, as you defend the AI center keeping the Cradles in orbit, because the combat satellites the corporations put in orbit to stop each other from leaving and terraforming new planets first will fire on any craft that attempts to break orbit, trapping humanity in atmosphere as the pollution eventually reaches the Cradles and kills everyone. The Old King ending is the most morally black and leads to much of the same, as you join forces with a Lynx by the callsign of Old King and shoot down 5 of the Cradles, killing 100 million people, before killing every Lynx who tries to stop you, and finishing the job, single handedly ending the human race. The Orca ending is the morally grey, as you simply destroy the AI center that controls the orbit paths of the Cradles, causing them to crash to Earth, putting an end to the wars as it also brings down the combat satellites allowing humanity to spread to other planets and terraform.
