Just focus on this: Davy Graham's influence is undeniable. Paul Simon, in particular, interpreted Graham's style very well--"Anji" is a classic. The video is very cool because it demonstrates that Graham communicated effectively to the 'common man.' He didn't need pyrotechnics. He just played from the heart; EVERY note is believable. He could make people listen--that's what it's all about.

The young lady is Sheila, Mike's wife. Ken Russell - who made the documentary on "The Guitar Craze" - from which this clip is taken - was a regular at the Troubadour at the time. The look he captured here - of post war Notting Hill - was captured magnificently by photographer Roger Mayle in 1956 (with his series of images taken over 3 days in Southam Street)

Led Zeppelin's Stairway riff adds an ascending sequence on top of the descending riff, (which is interesting in that a stairway goes up and it goes down, and so does the Stairway To Heaven riff.) Musically, though, this addition of the ascending line distinguishes the Zeppelin composition from any of the other similar tunes, especially considering that it is just the intro, anyway. It doesn't really sound like Stairway To Heaven until you add in the ascending riff on top of the descending riff and resolve the way Stairway To Heaven resolves. So Zeppelin developed contrapuntal lines and resolved the chord progression with other chords so it is a different composition than either Taurus or Cry Me A River. Led Zeppelin should win the court case. Davy Graham might have a shot at it though. Incidentally a similar note sequence occurs during the "You're asking me will my love grow" part of the Beatles song "Something" by George Harrison.

I also recall he mentioned that part of Graham's influence on him was his revolutionizing the use of altered tunings.

@techdudezz - This clip is from the 1959 BBC Documentary - 'Guitar Crazy'. I think Davey was only 19 here. Page + Led Zepplin were still kids when this was made. This came way before Stairway to Heaven ! Davey went on to discover and introduce to the guitar World - Modal D tuning - also called Celtic tuning (Dadgad) which Jimmy Page, Bert Jansch, John Renbourne + many others borrowed and used to make a name for themselves. None of them acknowledged his influence upon them !

8 years late but BULLSHIT. Bert Jansch & John Renbourn always, repeat ALWAYS gave credit to Davey Graham, and ALWAYS told an audience before playing one of Davey's songs, exactly who wrote the song. That is the difference between covering another artist who you admire, and what Jimmy Plagerism did, which was to steal from others and say it was his own, collecting royalties along the way. Page is a wanker.

Is this the same "Cry Me A River", written in 1953 by Arthur Hamilton.....Yes t is, therefore it would not belong to Davy Graham and it is credited to Arthur Hamilton on the credits when Davy recorded it and released in 1963. And if Spirit took this for Taurus and then Jimmy Page for Stairway To Heaven, then, Cry Me A Copyright Clusterfuck! This was recorded by 4 artists in 1955, most notably, Julie London. In my honest opinion, I think this is going to be dismissed because it seems that a lot of artists have used those chords including Arthur Hamilton and I agree if anyone should be suing everyone, It's the Italian Composer Giovanni Battista Granata, but according to human nature...where did he hear it from??? We will never know! And the songs sound alike in the opening chords, but at this point, who the hell cares! Because someone is going to use those chords again and again! And I love Led Zepp, but I also know that Page has had an itchy hand or ear and used other material without permission....and has been called on it in the past. This is very interesting though. I was a live sound and recording engineer and toured with bands and worked in various studios and there would always be an artist that would record "their" music and you would hear notes and chords and say to yourself....That sounds exactly like_____!!!! everything.explained.today/Cry_Me_a_River/ then click on Davy Graham.

Let's remember him as he was in this video. In the early 60's he took the acoustic guitar to places it hadn't been before - people like Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Paul Simon owe a huge debt to him and are happy to acknowledge it. Sadly, he has now lost the plot due to years of drink and drug abuse. I think whoever organised this tour should be ashamed of themselves for exposing him to ritual humiliation.
