That was my thought too. A functioning core 2 duo for $19 seriously isn't a bad deal at all, even if you have to throw a few pieces of junk-drawer hardware into it I still have such a rig in my collection, running WinXP, and it handles basic tasks quite well. I've no expectations of modern games with that antique, but then, the reason I have it is to run certain legacy software that won't run on 64-bit versions of Windows.

A tip for future reference would be to just install windows offline on a separate computer and then just transfer that drive to the test PC. You could also clone that windows install as an image (~30ish GB) and use that image for future drives whenever you need a fresh windows instance. Edit: these type of builds would also be a fun place to start messing around with Linux installs

I really love how original is your content. Although there are top-notch tech KZbinrs out there, they are all assembling machines that most of the times a small percentage of people can afford, or reviewing graphics cards that cannot be bought. Granted I know there's not much they can do and they try to provide content of what's available. But my point is they are all different flavors of pretty much the same. Your content is awesome when I am in a moment of needing geeky nerdy fun. I have to admit thanks to the top-notch KZbinrs I was able to assemble a computer as recently as this week AND was able to troubleshoot that the motherboard was the problem (ugh it was a pain but I found it), so they do have their place but again my point is your content is really different and pure entertainment value. Now, having said that, I would love to see a video of you taking on those top-notch tech KZbinrs and assembling a top-tier computer that you may actually keep after squeezing every penny of all your sponsors, including Vileda :)

My neighbor sold me an old A9 APU mini PC with the Paleolithic era 1TB WD Green hard drive in it (RIP WD Green Hard Drives) for $20 CAD ($16 USD) It is surprisingly powerful (not for gaming) for what I ended up using it for. It also came with a monitor, mouse, a set of speakers, AA battery charger, 2 elves and a partridge in a pear tree.

The CPU is the bottleneck in these first tests because the GPU without proper drivers is literally not doing any work, these games are running with a software renderer, the CPU is doing all the work.

I think, Dawid, you need to make this a series. Slowly upgrade the $25 PC until you can't anymore (GTX 260, C2Q, more RAM if it can, SSD, that USB3 card, etc. etc.) and take us along for the ride. Make a real budget baller :)
@HappyBeezerStudios
@HappyBeezerStudios 2 жыл бұрын
The hardest limit would probably be the motherboard. No oc, probably limited to 4 GB RAM and lack of drivers for modern OS. I'm writing this from a C2Q oc'ed to 4.1 GHz with 8 GB DDR2 and a GTX 660 Ti, which can run Doom 2016 and Witcher 3 at playable framerates. It basically reaches into the lower end of i5 territory, which means tons of games up until maybe 2015-17 will run just fine. So the platform itself is still capable. Obviously not as much as something less ancient, but for the right price can still make for an okay entry gaming rig.
@OverTallman
@OverTallman 2 жыл бұрын
@@HappyBeezerStudios IIRC this is a Dell Vostro 200/400, there's also Inspiron 530 which use the same hardware but has silver case instead of black. The motherboard is indeed the hard limit here, but it's not like what you think: There were 2 motherboards for this model, G33M02 and G33M03. They're pretty much the same with the exception of CPU support: G33M03 supports quad core while G33M02 does not. Unfortunately Dawid has the G33M02 motherboard, as seen at 2:15. Still fine though, it supports E7000 and E8000 Core 2 Duos and since it's an LGA775 board there's BSEL mod for some decent overclocking. Even better, this board supports up to 8GB RAM, or maybe 16GB if you can find real 4GB DDR2 sticks (not those AMD-only sticks in eBay) Definitely has potential, with a better CPU, GPU and more RAM it can some kickass XP gaming machine.

In cases like this, where you can't boot from USB, you can use an SSD to mount the image to, and boot into the installer from the SSD and install on what will be the main drive.

@@LegionGamingTV it never went over 10% utilization, without being cpu bottlenecked and while spitting out approx. 1fps. I'd call that a dead iGPU. Could also be a lack of system memory, but considering the games tested that's rather unlikely.

I may have a tip for booting from such old devices: Just burn the install image to your HDD and install the system to a secondary partition on there. That works when you can't boot from anything else other than your system drive, I had to do that in the past with such old systems and it works pretty well but requires some more work to then expand the partition later on
