I'm still surprised by how well Dark Crusade has held up. It's still one of the most solid RTS games, and easily the best set in Warhammer.

I thought the campaign was crap..... you could just spam buildings all around the CP's after leaving one command centre intact and never lose a defensive battle again. I did love the Tau and Necrons, new units etc Tau were my main for MP and they wrecked on release...... Necrons were OP as well but Tau countered them well.

@@dimasrahadian SS has been patched by the community so it's now on par with DC in terms of balance, making skirmish games or multiplayer awesome. The campaign in SS is not as good as DC for two reasons - defense missions no longer retain your base from the last time you played in that territory, you have to build your base from scratch. That does make it a bit challenging, but it's also tedious as hell, especially when playing on the hardest difficulty, which brings me to the second problem: on hard, artificial difficulty changes are made so that the enemy units have WAY more health than your units, even without upgrades.

The gameplay didn't feel dated to me when I relayed around a year ago. It really does just need to have the assets updated. Saying that, the game doesn't look that bad tbh. Zoomed out the units look ok and there's still plenty of colour and other effects going on to make it look good

Make sure to get the zoom out mod for this game. It's really easy to install, doesn't add a million units and factions when you just want to learn the game as a beginner and dont want to be overwhelmed.... the zoom out mod is still perfect and makes this game complete

I played that game to death when it first came out. Just couldn't get enough of it and so tough! Just this sneaking difficulty level growing over the whole game. Brilliant. Such a shame the later games were so different. They just didn't have this same tight feel. I never got anywhere with them. How about yourself?

Oh man. These games defined childhood and teenage years. I was 14 playing this game and, wow, just wow. Great memories when playing with my pop. I hope you experience these for yourself, you'll see right through modern gaming standards as you play older games. Yes, some are badly optimized, but the concept and what all you could do ... That's where the magic is.

I remember playing as the guard on one of the larger campaign-map levels. I got counter attacked and pushed into my spawn corner. Usually that means death, this time there was 1 primary line of attack and I had a small unimportant unit called a Baneblade super heavy tank wedged into the back end of that choke point. I spent 20-30 minutes with it under constant repairs from my tech priests, watching its hitpoints rise and fall as I rebuilt a workable army and sent a few scouts to find a place in the enemy lines that were not spewing units at me as fast as my multi turreted slab of armour the size of a battleship could kill them under its withering firepower. Eventually I found a gap, threw 2-3 units of sapper units (ogryns backed up by one sentinel and I think one heavy gunner team) it was all I could spare as the rest were shooting down from a cliff to keep my one base alive vs 2 enemies. I poked the enemy base, no response, so down went their unit production, forward went the baneblade and as bloody as the killing field was that damned slab of angry guns and heavy armour did steadily roll itself forward bit by bit until only scorched and blackened ruins remained of the enemy force. To this day I remember the fight, but have no clue if the map-bonus, ability or support-squad was worth it in the end. It was one of the campaigns I eventually dominated the system with tho. Big guns, big tanks and massed flashlights tended to work out ok in the end vs most AI. Almost as memorable tho was the immortal necron commander soloing his way through the map while resurrecting his scouting/sacrificial/blocker units was also a fun if totally OP time, slow to kill as no AE but he could literally take in the entire enemy force and take out most of it, eventually.

Some already mentioned it but Ultimate Apocalypse mod turns this into a whole new game, so many units added, all balanced and mostly lore accurate, including huge titan units. It also fixes a lot of things and you can finally ZOOM OUT! :D On another note, these games used to be fairly competitive (don't know if still are), the micromanagement was a huge thing, not just choosing how to use your commander ability but every single unit movement could determine the battle result, it was amazing.

One of the best things about this game is the modding and one of, if not the best mods, is Ultimate Apocalypse which has been constantly worked on and improved for over a decade and it has so many features I won't even try to list them here. Let's just say it lives up to it's name. You can also create custom flags and decals really easily and use them in game.

Dark Crusade and Soulstorm were one of my most played games back in the day. It's like Total War but without all the economy crap. You conquer the map and each land gives you a bonus whether it is units or an upgrade for your hero. And upgrading your hero was a blast he starts out without anything and then you slowly add gear on him that gives him passive and active abilities in battles. I lost so many hours gearing up all the different heroes. My fav faction aside from space marine was def the human army. They had all these wimpy soldiers but there is a crap ton of them oer squad. Their guns were like little flashlights that barely did anything and it was fun seeing them cry, break and panic if they get hit by a missile or something lol. You end up burying the opponent with overwhelming quantity of small craply units I loved it.

Mack, I've contacted the Dawn of war publishers customer service a few years back (there is a guide somewhere on steam). I could send them pictures of all cd-keys boxes and cd's. And they gave me steam keys for all the games.

Aside from all the other good points... the animations are still incredible... when Chaos summon their barracks and it turns and twists in weird angles in the air... incredible. And the little things like when vehicles are pushed back a bit after getting hit by rockets, makes the battlefield feel so alive.

Dark Crusade was awesome because it introduced semi unique campaigns for each faction where the missions for each faction stronghold would be the same, but with flavor dialogue where your faction and there's taunt it out.

I remember when this came out... Brought this to a Lan party with 5 buddies. Had to play counter strike the first 2 hours, not my cup of tea. Then, after some begging, we had a match. The rest is history. For the next hours, until the break of dawn, we played skirmishes. And everybody loved it. Even the 2 guys who didn't like rts that much to begin with. It is simply outstanding good. The graphics are of course a bit rough nowadays, but see past that. You will have trouble finding a game, that rivals this.

The problem with DoW 3 was that it tried to simplify the mechanics to make it more e-sports like. When they should've just taken DoW 1 and gave it prettier graphics. That's it. That's all they had to do. Maybe incorporate some of the tactics in DoW 2.

You can even add your own decals and in turn, your units can look unique in multiplayer! Also, after you've played your fill, give Ultimate Apocalypse a try, it's a mod that well, adds and balances a lot :D You'll be able to zoom out further! And lots more units, which is fun, the chaos is amazing :D Great review, great games!

I got Dark Crusade from steam like a year ago and didn't need any fixes, runs very well. I quickly got used to the zoomed in camera and moved on with the gameplay. I can agree that the AI can be very deceptive sometimes. I breezed through the half of the map, already conquered some of the races and suddenly hit a wall. You encounter the commander and if you have little initial force, you can basically surrender as there is not time to turtle up. As Tau I was fighting chaos with two bases and was just flooded with troops. I had a lot of long range battle suits but even they couldn't stand a chance. I can recommend this game to anyone really.
