I remember seeing an interview with Kristen where she said when they first got together and would fight she'd just leave and Dax eventually told her she couldn't keep doing that if they wanted a future. She said to stay and talk things through. That's some emotional maturity right there.

My husband and I do pre-marital counseling for couples in our church all the time and part of the "homework" we assign our couples is listening to that episode of Armchair Expert. And we do that for exactly the reasons Dax describes. You listen to them be annoyed and defensive and the push and pull of someone else's expectations and the self-realization that happens in marital riffs like that and what it sounds like to come back together. When we talk about conflict in marriage we aren't talking about the full-on screaming, door slamming kinds of arguments, we talk about the way that the little things build and how to diffuse the annoyances and mis-communicated expectations before they become something bigger. It isn't comfortable to listen to but it's honest and that's what makes it so remarkable. It isn't scripted, there wasn't a team of writers perfecting their dialogue to "emulate what marriage is like," it's just a real look at what marriage is like.

Omg I LOVE this!! I started turning the voice recorder on my phone on when my partner and I fought. I did this to play it back to him later so that he could hear how unreasonable and mean it sounded. While it worked about 75-80% of the time as I tend to be much more calm and uninterested in arguing. BUT, the other 20-25% of the time I would play it back and hear how unreasonable and ridiculous that I sounded. I think it’s actually a really positive and revealing process to not fight without recording it because then later when you are both calm and not emotionally reactive, you can replay it and be more likely to meet halfway with calm and clarity.

I tried listening to that episode of Armchair Expert and it's just, it's unbelievably cringe-inducing. The tension is palpable and while it's obvious that both Dax and Kristen are trying to, like, get through it while keeping their emotions in check, you can tell they really just want to scream at each other. It was brave to put that out to the public imo - not many people would be willing to expose that side of their relationship!

While I'm an armcherry 4 life, I can appreciate how this format adds a deeper level of vulnerability to the guests with all of their nuanced visual quirks that you don't get from a purely audio experience. That's why I'm going to San Antonio to watch Dax and Manica Pad-man do their thing in living color!
@kgrobinson0075 жыл бұрын
I so want to go to the San Antonio show, but recent car repairs made our budget too tight. I am really curious who the guest is since we do have some well known actors that live in the area. Enjoy the show!

The whole picture is the love story, not just the easy to digest bits. This just looks like two people with traits on opposite sides of multiple spectrums that are willing to learn from each other. It’s the product of creating safe space for each other to grow and be themselves unapologetically. Hats off guys 🤟

21 minutes into the Armchair Expert episode with Kristen Bell... and I'm glad Dax Shepard realises how patronising and controlling he came across. He basically cuts off Kristen every sentence and won't let her finish her version of the story. If it wasn't for watching this youtube clip, I would never attempt to finish that armchair episode .. can't stand the way Dax treats his wife.

If you listen to his podcast, he admits that he is constantly fighting his ego because he has a drive to be liked and to impress people. He's very self aware about his flaws most of the time. Yeah, they can run away with him occasionally, but he usually owns up to it or catches himself and self-corrects. It's very interesting to listen to. I used to not be a fan of his, but it's become my favorite podcast.
